Uranium is transported viaPort Wakefeld Rd, onto the PortExpressway, over the Derrick Diver

Bridge and up Victoria Rd towardsOuter Harbour through Taperoo,Osborne and North Haven - travellingpast schools, churches, communitycentres, sports ovals, parks andhomes and alongside the Port River.

Western Australia and QueenslandGovernments have plans to allow

uranium mining but wont allow it to

be shipped from WA or QLD ports.

    Instead, uranium is earmarked to

take a long road for export via Port

    Adelaide or Darwin.

    Currently around 4000 tonnes of

    uranium are shipped from Port

Adelaide from uranium mines in SA.

This gure could more than double

if mines continue to be approved and

uranium is mined in WA and QLD.

    Port Adelaide residents are

    concerned that increased uranium

    transport will impact:

    house/ property value

    road safety

    radiation exposure

    the environment and waterways

    wildlife, including the Port River

    dolphins

    limited emergency response

    capacity.

Transport and risk informaon compiled by: Dr Amanda J Ruler RN, BA(Hons), Grad Dip Gerontological Nursing, PhD. Pracsing RegisteredNurse and Health Science Researcher. Naonal Vice President , Medical

Associaon for Prevenon of War (Australia).

Community members take part in a no export acon on theBirkenhead Bridge, Port Adelaide, October 2013.

The Port River is home to a community of Indo-Pacic BolenoesDolphins and the world renowned Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.

    Uranium is radioactive. You cannot

smell, taste or see radiation. The link

    between uranium mining and lung

    cancer has long been established.

Uranium is mined in SA and NT andsold for nuclear power overseas. QLDand WA have recently overturnedbans on uranium mining despiteopposition. Now, hundreds ofexploration licences have beengranted to explore for uranium.

Renewable energy is a cheaper, safer, cleaner energy source thannuclear and is quicker to installand replace coal power. Uraniumcontributes just 0.29% of Australianexport revenue and just 0.015% of

    jobs.

South Australian residents must beconsulted about the transport ofuranium yellowcake through theirsuburbs and out of Port Adelaideand informed of the environmentaland human health risks, especially

as yellowcake is part of the nuclearfuel chain.

There is no forwad plan in placeto respond to a uranium spill inthe area despite projections ofa massive increase in uraniumexports out of the Port in the next15 years from uranium from WA

    and QLD.

Road transport of radioactivematerial poses particular risks tothe health of communities and the

environment. Heavy trucks makeup 3% of vehicles but are involvedin 16% of fatalities on Australianroads. Currently trucks travelaround 5.5 million kms per year, and are involved in around 150 fatalcrashes per year. Per kilometretravelled, trucks are 2.4 times morelikely to be involved in a crash thanpassenger cars.

    Whether transport of radioactive

material is by road, ship or rail, there is always a risk of accidentsand escape of radioactive materialinto the environment. Trained staffand appropriate equipment may notbe readily available to deal with aspill. For more information pleasend us online: www.nowpa.org.au
