CHENEL visit by the Music Department

On Tuesday 27 September I took the Year 10 and 11 BTEC Musicstudents to the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East LondonCollege to visit the Music Department. The Year 10s, who met methere first thing in the morning, were introduced to Logik sequencingsoftware in one of the Apple Mac suites. They created beats, melodies and bass lines and mixed down their own work onto CD.Some of the work was very creative and good in the time given.

The Year 11 students attended a three hour afternoon workshop in astate of the art recording studio. They learnt about the equipment, how it is used, and were introduced to the vast mixing desk. Theyrecorded several tracks of their own cover version of Pixie Lott’s ‘UseSomebody’.

Our students were very impressed with the equipment, resources andthe more relaxed environment of the college and were able to speakto BTEC level 3 students about what they are expected to do at thatlevel. All in all it was a very interesting and enjoyable experiencewhich we are hoping to repeat again next term.

Ms Quow (Head of Music)

Visit byBaronessLola Young

On Friday 4th November 2011Baroness Lola Young came tospeak to Year 10 studentsabout the work she does in theHouse of Lords.

Baroness Young was encouragedby the questions asked bystudents: how you become aBaroness, what a Baroness does, raising of the age for studentsgetting their driving license, detention time for peoplearrested under the TerrorismAct…. Students were surprisedthat politicians could have suchgenuine passion. BaronessYoung highlighted the work ofAnti-Slavery International; anorganisation she is verypassionate about. Students weresurprised about this organisationas they thought of the concept ofslavery as something which is nolonger in existence.

Although members of the Houseof Lords are not formally electedinto power our students werehappy that people from a rangeof backgrounds and professionswere encouraged to give theirviews on the work of the Houseof Commons.

Ms Tuptuk, Humanities Teacher

Royal Albert Hall VisitOn Tuesday 1st November2011 a group of twenty-threestudents attended a visit to theRoyal Albert Hall with theMusic Department. We wereaccompanied by Ms Quow, MrJones and Ms O’Connell, aswell as other members of stafffrom the DifferentiationDepartment. We travelledusing the Transport for Londonnetwork, using a combinationof buses and undergroundtubes. When we departed fromthe tube at South Kensingtonwe had the opportunity to walkthe last stretch to the AlbertHall, and saw many well-known landmarks andbuildings, including the RoyalCollege of Music.

When we arrived we were luckyenough to see the RoyalPhilharmonic Orchestra performtwo well-known British classics,Vaughan Williams’s SeaSymphony and Elgar’s EnigmaVariations. The performance wascalled Great Classics: EnglishMasterpieces. We had tickets forseats in the stalls, and got to sitin front of the stage, just a metreor two from the conductor, BrianWright. The architecture insidethe Albert Hall was spectacularand is much bigger on the insidethan you would expect from itsexterior appearance. We were allstunned by the orchestra, choirand two opera singers: EmmaBell (Soprano) and JacquesImbrailo (Baritone), whoperformed in the second half ofthe performance. All in all, wehad a fantastic evening with allstaff and students attendinghaving an excellent time.

Someof the places and people thatthese boxes have reached in thepast include a Saturday schoolfor children of the poorestfamilies, prisoners’ families, akindergarten in a shanty town inRomania, those who live in rundown tenements, a villagedevastated by flooding, to namebut a few. These families do nothave much in the way of personalpossessions therefore we hopethat our gift boxes will bringsome joy into their lives.

My thanks to all those whocontributed gifts for this project, assembled , filled and wrappedthe boxes. A special thank youto Ms Wills and members of 8Rwho contributed so much to thisproject also.

96 Year 7 students, over 2 daysdescended on Cuffley OutdoorCentre in Hertfordshire, duringOctober 2011. They took part inTeambuilding Activities. Thereason we embarked on thisprogramme was so that ournew students could experiencethe outdoor environment andwork together:• To get to know each other • To lessen playgroundconflicts.

Students worked in small groupstrying to figure out problems thatneeded solving. They had towork together to move objectsfrom one area to the other, theyhad to use their thinking skills tomanoeuvre a group of peopleover a distance of approximately30ft, just using 3 planks of woodand 2 tyres, without falling off.Can you do that? Some of ourYear 7 students successfullymanaged this challenge andlearnt how to communicateeffectively with each other in theprocess.

5We also worked on a largeobstacle course helping eachother over, under, through andalong. Those that chose to racealong the obstacle soon foundthat they had to return for theothers in order to make it to thenext stage. Some students foundthat they became more helpful toeach other rather thanobstructive or negative, whilstothers who thought they wereleaders listened more carefully todirections given by othermembers of the group.

Year 7s became architects, builders, designers anddecorators during the shelterbuilding session. Students wereasked to build a safe waterproofshelter, using sticks of varioussizes, leaves or debris. Thisactivity proved very excitingbecause students used strengthand active team work to create aliving space, and withimagination produced a semiwaterproof building. Studentscan now claim if out in the wild, they could and would be able tolook after themselves.

Jack Petchey Speak Out ChallengeRecently, two students from Northumberland Park represented the school at the JackPetchey 'Speak Out!' Challenge 2011. Fartuun Mohammed, with her speech entitled 'What do you see', and Joseph Jackson, with his speech 'The Myway Code' gave excellent performances, and were supported byother students who were exemplary ambassadors for the school.

It was a great evening and an inspiring event to participate in, and for the second yearrunning a student fromNorthumberland Park was madethe winner: Joseph, with his wittyand engaging speech aboutstaying safe on the roads, wasawarded first place by the judgingpanel. He won an iPod touch andwas shortlisted for the London-wide final in 2012.

This was a first forNorthumberland Park School. On Monday 7th November agroup of twenty two Y10studentsattended this very successfulconference to launch the ‘ValueMe’ programme..

The school was successful inmaking a joint bid with Park Viewschool to the European SocialFund to provide this programmewhich lasts a year. It provides thestudents with the opportunity tofocus on developing a range ofpersonal skills and qualities andparticipate in a range of differentlearning opportunities in additionto the subjects they are studyingin school. It provides them withnew experiences and challengesgiving them increasedopportunities to think about andstart planning their post 16progression pathways so theyexperience a smooth transitionfrom school to college/apprenticeships or training.

The conference introduced thestudents to the programme andgave them the opportunity tomeet and work with all thestudents on the programme byexperiencing three tastersessions on personal safety, team building and looking at thepersonal qualities and skillsneeded for a range of careers.

Feedback from the students wasvery positive with the overridingquestion being when will there bea second conference? Theanswer is next term with ParkView hosting.

Rabbi BarryMarcus – Visit toYear 11 SociologyClassOn Wednesday 23rd Novembera Year 11 Sociology class had aguest speaker: Rabbi BarryMarcus from the CentralSynagogue. Students weregiven some information on howthe Rabbi thinks religion linksto socialisation and theteaching of norms and values.

Students asked some interestingand controversial questions. MsMiller and I were impressed bythe questions being asked andthe maturity with which studentslistened. Some of the questionsasked were: What is your mostmemorable moment as a Rabbi? If there was only one religion inthe world would the world bemore peaceful? Are men andwomen equal? Views on thePalestinian situation. The Rabbitold students that no two eyeshave exactly the same vision. When judging people we shoulduse our strongest eye to see thepositives. When judgingourselves however the Rabbisaid we should be our strongestcritic, reflect on ourselves andhow we can improve.

The Rabbi’s stance was that ifwe want to make a difference tothe world we ought to work onourselves first – make our livesbetter so we can then make otherpeople’s lives better. Whenasked the similarities/differencesbetween Judaism and otherreligions the Rabbi respondedthat there are far more similaritiesthan differences betweenJudaism, Christianity and Islam –it’s a case of reading andlearning.

The theme for Black HistoryMonth 2011 at NPCS was theOlympic Games. Despite this, wecould not turn down theinvitation to attend ‘A Taste ofthe Caribbean’, courtesy ofcelebrity chef Collin Brown. Agroup of NPCS staff and studentswere treated to an inspirational talkand exquisite Jamaican cuisine atCoombes Croft Library on Tuesday4th October. Jenny Bailey, theNeighbourhood Learning Manager, catered for those of us who wantedmore, by allowing staff, studentsand their parents to ‘Cook and Eat’African and Caribbean dishes onWednesday evenings after schoolduring Black History Month.

Black History Month assembliesthis year focused on theparticipation of Black athletes inthe modern Olympic Games. Twostudents, Nabiha Choudhry 7R andFartuun Mohamed 10Trose to the challenge ofpreparing and deliveringpresentations to theiryear group aboutfamous Black Olympicathletes.

Standard. This gives useven more reason tocelebrate, in addition toblack history, thecultures, heritages andcustoms of our culturallyrich school.

Ms Köpke presided over the meeting point of African and Spanishcultures with a series of salsa lessons for Year 11 students in theDance Studio.

The aim of these lessons was two-fold: firstly to raise money forcharity and also to comply with the demands of NPCS’s buddingsalseros! These sessions were well attended and the moneyraised, £25.00, will be donated to charity

Students who wanted to satisfy their curiosity about ‘old-school’Black African/American/Caribbean family life, or who simplywanted a good laugh, flocked to the Library to scrutiniseRochelle’s excellent parenting skills in ‘Everybody Hates Chris.’

Mrs Nolan, our Librarian, once again produced a Black HistoryMonth Library Quiz which was won by Mickson Efekele 7G, DilanKoc 8T, Bicton Watson 11G and Daniel Badewa11K.

This year, as you may already know, NPCS was awarded theCultural Diversity Quality Standard. This gives us even morereason to celebrate, in addition to black history, the cultures, heritages and customs of our culturally rich school.
