NPH - PERU

NPH Peru is very proud of the advances in our construction. We accomplished essential projects in 2012 thanks to our international donors and the effort of many

people. We have finished renting in other locations and now the entire home is in one complex including our National Director and his family. Based on financial

constraints, we had a step-by-step approach, ensuring our priorities with always the children in mind.

Once again we want to thank all of you for your support throughout this past year. Furthermore, we are looking

forward to completing our dream in our home of “Casa Santa Rosa de Lima” as construction

will be ongoing throughout the next year.

At the end of October, Alfredo Hernandez, our National Director, his wife and two daughters moved into their own house built inside the property. The house is based on the design from the director’s house in Bolivia, which was more efficient using an existing house plan, thus saving money on design. It was a big step for Alfredo and his family. “It is a dream come true,” said Alfredo. “I can see the necessities and the problems closer, and of course I’m closer to the philosophy of Father Wasson.” Since Alfredo is now living on the property, he can work more directly with the staff and the children, finding solutions quickly. “Being here helps the children to have more confidence,” explained Alfredo.

Living inside the house means also saving a lot of time traveling between his house, the office and the main house. “My daughters run to the playground,” confessed Alfredo. “If I want to play

soccer with the children on the weekends, I can do it or being here for all the celebrations. It is so much better for everyone.”

The National Director’s house will also be used as the visitor’s house. The two visitor’s rooms are the perfect accommodations for visiting godparents, staff from our international fundraising offices or NPH International service teams. In the past, these visitors had to stay in a hotel close to the house, which was uncomfortable and expensive.

Volunteer HouseOur five volunteers moved to their new white house at the end of November. The house has three bedrooms, a dining hall, kitchen and two bathrooms. The new facility means that our volunteers have a private space only for them; they have the best of both worlds because they

are living close to the children but in their own house. When the volunteers moved to their new house they freed up a dormitory from their old house which allowed us to move the administrative office.

The Hub of the HomeAt the beginning of December we fulfilled one of our biggest dreams of moving our administration offices to the house. During almost five years our office was far away from the house in a rented property because of the Internet and the close accessibility of banks and other vendors.With the release of a dormitory in one of the houses, we accommodated the accounting

department and the National Director temporarily in this dormitory. It allows us to finally have all our departments in one location. In the future, our office will have its own building equipped with the proper tools. Still the most challenging issue was having internet. At the moment we can offer internet to the office and in the library for the children.

Garden and PathsCreating a healthy environment was another priority for us this past year. Our goal is to have tall trees and grass all over the property. We planted grass in many of the free area spaces, around the homes and trees. Planting grass also means less dust in the houses and for the children’s health. The children are able to care for

the grass, trees and even the flowers. This way they learn to be responsible and proud of their own beautiful space. In the non- grass areas we built paths which also helps reducing dust. We are focusing on building the paths to make the main road.

AwningsSummer in Peru lasts six months and the sun is very strong. When our children are washing their clothes, it is harmful to be exposed to the harsh sun. Our solution was to installing awnings in our laundry area where the washing machines

are. Our children and the caregivers can stay outside during the long sun hours under these great awnings. This will also help us care for the washing machines, since we want them to last for a long time.

PRIORITY

1 Kitchen

A combined kitchen and dinning hall has always been one of our main priorities, but due to difficult financial times, our new priority is now a proper kitchen. We have a temporarily common dining hall and the children can eat inside their

own houses, so the permanent dining hall is on hold.

The kitchen is the heart of the home because food has such an important role in our lives.

Our prefab kitchen is not adequate for our necessities. Having a safe, sterile kitchen is a priority for our home. The new kitchen will have both cold and dry storage areas with industrial refrigerators. Food preparation and public health is a concern for us in creating healthy meals.

It is a challenge to prepare three meals a day for a big, hungry family and to do it in the most nutritious and frugal way possible. The kitchen will have enough space to prepare all the meals and store food, and it will also have bathrooms for our kitchen staff.

PRIORITY

2 Baby House Our 17 kinder-aged children are living in one of the normal family houses. The children between two and five years old are living in a space desig-ned for youths and adults. The new baby house will be located on the other side of the property with their own private garden and playground, in a safe, secure area.

The design of the baby house has been adapted to include features to support the care of our under-fives. The specially designed bathrooms will provide child height washbasins and toilets as well as baby changing facilities. The bathro-oms will be inside the sleeping rooms to facilita-te easier transition for nightly use.

3Public BathroomsOur third priority is building public bathrooms on our property. We need this public space so that visitors, guests and staff have their own facility rather then going into the children’s homes. The

bathrooms will be located in the middle of the property, where the sport area will be. It will be comprised of three woman stalls and three men’s stalls with sinks.

4 Clinic

Healthcare is a pillar of our programs, but until a permanent clinic is built, we are working from a prefabricated building which provides a very rudimentary clinic. The proposed clinic will house a variety of our existing operations including the psychology, social work, occupational and physi-cal therapy and additional offices. The building is based on the clinic design of NPH Nicaragua and will also provide a number of isolation rooms allowing us to house and treat new arrivals before integrating them into our population of children. It will also allow us to have a space for the children who need to be admitted for longer observation or treatment. We modified the de-sign for Nicaragua according to our needs with a final measurement of 615.02 m2. We estimate that the construction will take six months.

The design aims to unite social work and psycho-logy with the medical team, which will facilitate communication and help to provide better and more immediate care for our children. Our future clinic will have a garden that will give the envi-ronment a sense of tranquility and calmness. It will be built at the entrance of our home for easy access.

At the moment we have only one full-time nurse who has a variety of duties. She is in charge of bringing children to the hospital if needed, trea-ting them in our own facility and controlling the medical history of each child. A part-time doctor visits the house two or three times a week to ensure the efficiency of the treatments and for check-ups.

5 House EightOur social worker, is already planning her strategy for the coming years and will broaden our catchment area to ensure we are helping more children in situations of risk. In order to allow the continuing expansion of our family, we will need to start building more family style homes. We propose to build one more home which will complete the block of eight houses on the west side of our property.

Each home consists of a large kitchen/dining room, two large dormitories, two bathrooms each containing two showers and two toilets as well as wash basins, two large storage rooms, and a private bedroom and ensuite bathroom for up to three caregivers. The houses are designed in conjunction with NPH International Family Services to allow staff to live alongside the children forming a family unit.

6Administrative Offices

Six members work in the office daily; the accoun-tants, Communication Officer, Project Coordina-tor, Sponsorship Coordinator and the National Director. Our staff members are incredibly hard working and essential to all that we are able to accomplish within our home. Since the admin office is temporarily located in one of the rooms

of a house, where the house director and two young ladies live, we want to provide the staff with an appropriate working environment. The National Director and the accountants need a private office because they are managing delicate information, and they also need a small conference room.
