One of twelve pictures by Jonas Bendiksen for National Geographic Magazine: In the far northern corner of China's Xinjiang
province, in the Altai mountains, one can find the last remnants of a culture that possibly invented skiing. The area is
populated by a mix of ethnic Mongolians and Tuwas, who handmake their own rudimentary wooden skis in the same way
as their forefathers thousands of years ago. They hunt using only their traditional skis and leather hide ropes.

Craig Walker of The Denver Post: Cecil Bethea shaves the face of his partner, Carl Shepherd, during one of
Cecil's many visits to The Spearly Center, where Carl lives, in Denver. met in a Denver bar in 1969. Forty-
four years later, when Carl entered a nursing home suffering from dementia, Cecil became his guardian,
making the life-long partners ineligible for a Colorado civil union, legalized in 2013.

South Pacific, west of Fiji. It is home to a
rich Melanesian culture, where each tribal
group has its own identity, dialect, customs
and artwork. Strong Christian heritage
interweaves with magic rituals and
animistic cults. The pictures were taken on
Pentecost Island, where the natives
practice an ancient tradition of naghol -
jumping from high towers with lianas
wrapped around ankles.
