We are delighted to welcome you to Edge Hill University for thisNQT Conference and programme. If you qualified with us in theSummer then 'welcome back', if you qualified as a teachersomewhere else then we are pleased that you have chosen towork with us on your continued development as a teacher.

The Faculty of Education at Edge Hill is one of the most significantproviders of teacher training and education in the country and weare committed to providing the very highest quality opportunitiesto support you in becoming an even better teacher in theclassroom and to progress your career as a teacher. Welcome to the third and final of this year’s NQT Conferences provided by the Faculty ofEducation at Edge Hill University. We are delighted that you have seen the value of today’sconference and taken the time to meet up with old friends, University tutors and to take part ina wide range of workshops. This year, the conference has been extended to include workshopsfor graduates from post compulsory education and training. A special welcome to any graduatesfrom such programmes. We are excited about hosting a ‘TeachMeet’ session again and wewelcome and thank colleagues who have volunteered to share their outstanding practice.

Today’s programme is the result of work with teachers who have recently been successful incompleting their NQT year. They have helped shape the programme based on theirexperiences. We are delighted that they too are here today and extend a warm welcome.Whilst on welcomes, we are delighted to have Faisal Ahmed from Streford High School inManchester as our guest speaker.

A welcome from the NQT Programme Team

Faisal Ahmed joined Stretford High School as an Edge HillUniversity Religious Education PGCE trainee in September 2010and quickly established himself as a valued member of theHumanities and Social Sciences department; having a widerschool impact with personalised learning and the use oftechnology in the classroom.

In February 2011; Faisal was able to secure a full time post asTeacher of Humanities. He took up the position in September2011 after successful completion of the PGCE; creating newschemes of work, redefining form time and student leadership,spearheading the school literacy drive and endeavouring to instila love for learning in all his students.

As an RQT, Faisal was teaching four GCSE subjects includingReligious Studies, Modern World History, Sociology and Psychology,leading extra curricular subjects, Student Council facilitator andsharing his practice with colleagues, Edge Hill Universitygraduates and trainees. He played an integral part in the creationof the NQT conference and continues to share his expertise. InMarch 2013, after a national search, he was successfully appointedDirector of Academic School for Humanities and Social Sciences.

He is currently in the process of completing his Masters inEducation and NPQML qualification.

Theatre of Learning: “The Magic Plane” Cross curricularcreativity A Multisensory, Active and Experiential Approachto Learning Across the CurriculumSue PhillipsTheatre of Learning

This pioneering and innovative teaching method has beendeveloped by AST Sue Phillips in her school in Southern Englandin response to disaffected pupils who said that RE was “nothingto do with them or anything that they knew”. They were so boredthat over half of them refused to sit the final examination.This fantasy story told in five episodes explored over a term, ora year has been adapted for younger children from The Islandnow used widely in secondary schools to provide a framework forRE. It also provides a cross curricular framework for teachingCitizenship, History, Geography, Values and whatever yourimagination takes you to! It is a very engaging tool for buildingrelationships in your classes through talking and listening in acircle and to develop critical thinking through the questioningengendered by the activity.

An Introduction to Forest SchoolAlice SaveryShropshire Forest School

This workshop will involve going outside and playing in the naturalenvironment (please wear suitable clothing and footwear). We willthen return inside to discuss how Forest School is used as alearning opportunity and how this is linked to classroom work.This is suitable for all ages.Alice Savery is the Forest School Development Officer forShropshire Council. She delivers Forest School Training and CPDcourses. She also delivers Forest School sessions with a rangeof age groups from pre-school to Year 11.

‘Get that Job!’: EmployabilityJon-Leigh Pritchard ATL

Jon-Leigh is an Organiser for the ATL in the North West. Jon-Leigh has done considerable workin developing support for new entrants into teaching. He has extensive links with ITT providersand developed and delivered educational programmes across the country.

Using assessment to improve your teaching and the learningoutcomes of your pupils Deborah Green Deputy Head TeacherSt Thomas C.E. Primary School, Westhoughton, Bolton

Deborah is currently the Deputy Head teacher at St Thomas C.E.Primary School, Westhoughton, Bolton, whilst being seconded forone day a week to Edge Hill University as a Partnership Lead Trainer.She has a wealth of experience having taught for 22 years inschools of very different social economic background across theKey Stages. At present she is in charge of the assessment proceduresand analysis of data within her school, as well as managing thecurriculum content and being the Science and RE leader.This workshop will look at how we assess, what to assess andwhat to do with the results, before considering how this affectsthe planning and delivery of future lessons. It will explain the biggerpicture of how children are tracked across their Primary educationat present and discuss the importance of this in uncertain times.This workshop is suitable for Key Stages 1 and 2.

Concept Mapping Strategies (Assessment in Primary Science)David BarkerEdge Hill University

David Barker is Senior Lecturer in Primary and Early YearsScience Education. He has taught for 12 years in both Key Stagesand was part- time primary science consultant for Bury Authorityfor 5 years.The workshop will focus on developing the use of concept mapsas an AfL tool. Concept maps are very useful in showingchildren’s thinking which can be the starting point for scienceteaching. The workshop will share strategies with participants fordeveloping their use in Key Stages 1 and 2.

‘Fun to be Five’Alison HughesEYFS teacher, St. Stephen’s CE Primary School, Bolton

Come and join in and dare to get those fingers dirty! A hands onworkshop with lots of fun things to keep the funky fives focused!Alison is an experienced teacher of early years children who willprovide a workshop with helpful handy hints, full of practical funactivities which are guaranteed to excite and engage early years’children.

Digital Literacy in today’s classroomCherise DuxburyComputing CoordinatorSt Mary’s CE Primary, Bolton

Cherise has more than 10 years experience in the classroom andhas taught across both key stages from year 1 to year 6. She iscurrently ‘Computing coordinator’ at St Mary’s C of E primary inBolton. It was in year 6 that she first began blogging and it hashelped to transform her teaching and the learning in herclassroom as well as providing a great platform to engageparents. She has successfully blogged for 3 years with her blogsgetting over 25 000 hits. In 2012 – 2013, her class won ‘ChildEducation’ class blog of the year and was a finalist in international‘Edu Blogs’ class blog of the year. She will share her experienceof using blogs to help engage and motivate the learners ontoday’s classroom.The workshop will be focusing on ‘Cover it Live’ – a live bloggingtool, 5 sentence and 100 word challenges, capturing audio usingvarious tools and QR codes. This workshop is aimed at both keystages 1 and 2.

The use if ipads to support T&LTanasha RobinsonLiteracy Leader, St Silas Liverpool

Tanasha is a Year 3 primary school teacher in Liverpool. She isLiteracy leader and previous to that was ICT Leader. Tanashautilises iPads to support teaching, assessment, and learning inall subjects.The workshop will provide ideas of how to use various iPads appsto engage children in learning and extend activities across thecurriculum. It will show how they can be used to create teachingtools that can be used to support teaching and learning and offerassessment opportunities. This workshop is more aimed at KS2.

‘Challenging contexts – teaching mixed age groupsYvonne ShoneFarnborough Road Junior School, Southport

Yvonne is a highly experienced Primary school teacher. In thisworkshop she will share practical strategies of teaching verticalgroupings in small schools including up to date strategies fordifferentiation.

A Toolkit for Behaviour: working in challenging contexts Kirsty Pugh and Klare AthornThe Alternative School

Kirsty is the founder of an independent school called TheAlternative School and Klare is Assistant Head. The AlternativeSchool provides a focused approach to the barriers our youngpeople face to school. The workshop will focus on i) How tosurvive your first year: create your own wheel of support;resilience and stress management; planning and preparation andii) Behaviour Management: create a positive classroom; barriersto learning; nurture and restorative approaches.

Setting the right level of challengeAndrew Holt Assistant Headteacher, St Bede’s, Ormskirk

Andrew is a highly experienced teacher, Head of Department andSenior Leader. He has a wealth of experience and interest inenhancing Teaching and Learning. In this workshop Andrew willfocus on one of the current key priorities for schools and Ofsted:differentiation and challenge. He will provide practical strategieson how to challenge all pupils in the classroom regardless ofabilities. He will also focus on the use of data for planning,teaching and learning.

‘Taking the temperature of learning’: Demonstrating progressMichelle RathorStrategic Lead, Tameside LEA

Michelle is currently strategic lead for English across all schoolsin Tameside LEA. She will be introducing strategies that will helpyou to improve student engagement with their own progress andmeet the needs of the lowest achieving pupils. Drawing upon herprevious experience as Director of Teaching and member of thesenior leadership team, Michelle will share the key classroomstrategies for outstanding teacher and learning which can beimplemented in your own school. This session will cover allsubjects as ideas will be predominantly generic.

This workshop will explore how collegesuse data for the use of planning lessonsand developing the environment forteaching, learning and assessment.Paula and Kris will develop yourunderstanding on how to raiseachievement and how to improvemotivation of low performing students bysetting strategies using the dataavailable.
