Dedicated to helping the stray and shelter ani-mals in Turkey through financing educational projects in schools, financing and organizing neutering cam-paigns amongst stray dogs and supporting the SHKD forest shelter in Istanbul
An empty pocket
I already informed you that our pockets are empty after paying for;
the neutering campaign in Cunda,
the surgery room equipment for Tatvan (to enable sterilizations), and
the large quantities of anesthetics, intestine medicine and eye drops
which will be used for coming neutering campaigns.
Nevertheless, we do want to continue organizing neutering campaigns and be
able to give a positive respond on the requests for help.
This means that we will have to raise funds more creatively, and need your
help more than ever!
There are a lot of organizations who place dogs in new homes, or help sick
dogs; beautiful initiatives, but spaying/neutering dogs is the only structural
and humane way to put a stop to growing stray dog populations and ending
animal suffering.
The StraydogsCampaign Foundation attacks this problem at the root and
would like to continue this, but we cannot do so without your practical and
financial support!

Tatvan
As you know, Omer Atis (former veterinary technician of the SHKD) is now
working for the municipality of Tatvan.
He already managed to produce some small miracles. With his help the neigh-
boring municipality of Bitlis is spaying/neutering dogs again, after we organized
some campaigns there and trained some vets.
The municipality of Tatvan is also treating stray animals much better now.
Tatvan is building a spay/neuter centre, but they did not have the money for
necessary equipment.
The StraydogsCampaign Foundation donated the funds for the equipment,
thanks to your support.
The arrival of the equipment was celebrated as even the mayor was present
that day. It is inspiring to see how well Tatvan takes care of their (stray) ani-
mals; which shows a positive side of Turkey.
You can read the whole story, accompanied by the pictures, by clicking here.

Cunda
Our most recent neutering campaign was on the island (peninsula) of Cunda; we re-
ceived the request to spay/neuter the entire population of stray dogs and cats.
Originally this would concern 200 cats and 60 dogs. To make a long story short, Murat
and the rest of the team went to Cunda on March 21st feeling good and optimistic. A
special donor made it possible for us to organize this campaign by donating the re-
maining funds needed.
We received great news on the first day, over 100 animals had been spayed/
neutered!
The second day brought disappointing news; it seemed there were 500 cats on Cunda
instead of 200. Besides the fact that we did not have the funds for these extra
animals, we discovered that the space reserved for aftercare was not sufficient for
even 200 cats and they did not manage to catch enough cats.
However, the cats on Cunda are living a good life. The inhabitants of Cunda are living
of fishery and there is a lot left behind on the docks to feed the cats. The inhabitants
are not bothered by the cats, and the cats are not bothered by the inhabitants.
But it still is an unhealthy situation with such a huge population of cats on such a
small island. And, because of the abundance of food sources, the population is
growing. Therefore it is absolutely necessary for all 500 cats to be spayed/neutered
and we do not want to give up on this!
I will keep on fighting, and hope other people will do so too!
Murat and I are discussing on how to continue.
There are still about 350 cats waiting to be spayed/
neutered. The capacity for aftercare is around 75-100 cats.
We have 3 options:
1st option would be that Murat and Necdet will make 5 trips
to Cunda, each time spaying/neutering around 75 cats;
750 euro for medicine
100 euro fee for Necdet
180 euro plane tickets for Murat and Necdet
1.030 euro each trip makes a total of 5.150 euro
2nd option would be to use the maximum capacity and have
the volunteers find another place for the aftercare, so that
we will make 3 trips spaying/neutering 115 cats each time;
1.150 euro for medicine
100 euro fee for Necdet
180 euro plane tickets for Murat and Necdet
1.430 euro each trip makes a total of 4.290 euro

Short news We have uploaded new photos to our Facebook page, taken in the Forest shelter.
There is a rumor circling the internet, stating that tics can be removed using
water and soap; do not try this!! You can read about removing tics by clicking
here.
Amending the Turkish animal law 5199 has been postponed until, at least, after
the elections in 2014. In the meantime we managed to convince the “Partij
voor de Dieren” (Dutch animal party) to express their malcontentedness
about the amendment to the Turkish prime minister.
The generous donation of AST Pharma, a quantity of medicine, has arrived in
Turkey. To everyone concerned; THANK YOU!
A child got bitten by a dog in the Sariyer neighborhood (Istanbul). Authorities
claim that investigation shows that the dog had rabies. This is usually the
start of a large scale massacre amongst dogs. How long will it take until peo-
ple realize that vaccinating dogs is much more efficient and the 20.000.000
euro given by the EU to Turkey to control rabies amongst dogs should have
been spent much more efficient…
Robyn from the US, paid a visit to the Forest shelter and wrote about her visit on
her weblog.
3rd option would be that a fellow organization has a trained vet available in the sur-
roundings of Cunda whom we could “borrow”; but I am still investing that option.
This would save us the travel expenses and the fee for Necdet, so that spaying/
neutering all remaining cats would cost around 3.500 euro.
