DESCRPTION AND BACKGROUND HISTORY INCLUDING CONSTRUCTION DATE(S).PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS. MATERIALS. MAJOR ALTERATIONS. IMPORTANT BUILDERS.ARCHITECTS. ENGINEERS. ETC.Residence. Wood frame set on rock and concrete foundation; ________________________________________rectangle (26' x 30'); 3 bays wide; 1 1/2-stories; shiplap siding; metal-covered oerkin-head roof with slightly extended eaves and exposed rafter ends; center wood panel and glass entrance on east; 2 interior brick chimneys with arched caps. Exterior features include. 1/1 double-hung sash with plain surrounds; knee braces; plain fascia boards; comer boards; shed-roofed overhang on south supported by knee braces and log posts with 2 wood panel and glass doors below; gable-roofed portico on east supported by knee braces; shed-roofed overhang on north supported by squared posts (7'x IS').This residence was built for the USES ranger stationed at the Purple Point (later Stehekin) Ranger Station. It also served as an office (see historic view^ reverse). E.O. (Jack) Blankenship was one of the early rangers located in Stehekin (the first station was located at head of lake; site now underwater). In 1939 W.O. Stambaugh ms the Stehekin District Ranger and lived in this house. The complex at one time had a bam (removed c.l965)j corral^ and oil/gas house (removed by USES); the office/warehouse, woodshed and bunkhouse are still standing. The CCC had a side camp stationed here in the 1930s and the USES used these men to build trails, shelters, and the barn (a. 1939). During WWII the USES stationed personnel here as aircraft observers, but by the end of the mr the station ms no longer used year-round. It became seasonal housing until the NPS received the property and began using it for employee housing (Darrel Wilsey currently lives here).

significance Eligible under Nat. Reg. Criterion C: as an example of a distinct type of arhiteciure. Although the integrity of the ranger station as a complex has diminished due to nemerous alterations to the buildings, this building remains an excellent example of 1920s-era USES residential architect-kre. In its function, simplicity, pattern-book style and use of natural materials, it reflects the USES design ethic of its day. It possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
