    Normal Development

    Its natural for your youngchild to feel anxious when

    you say goodbye. It is a

    normal stage ofdevelopment.

    Emerges around 9 months ofage, peaks around 12-24

    months, decreases between2 and 3 years of age, where

    he is learning to negotiatehis independence.

    The child may cry when the

    parent leaves because they

    fear that the parent will be

    gone forever. Then begins to cry when the

    parent returns, because this

    reminds the child of how he or

    Temporary Symptoms

    Refuse to go to school. They willdo almost anything to stay home.

    Fighting about getting dressed orinto the car in the morning.

    Reluctance to go to sleep becauseof the fear of being alone.

    Having nightmares.

    Feel ill, headache, stomachache,or vomitting at the time of

    separation or before. Overly clingy. They may shadow

    you around the house or cling toyour arm or leg if you attempt tostep out.

    Coping StrategiesBefore the School

    Children do pick up on your

    mood, so try to remain calm

    and positive about your child

    going to school.

    Bring their familiar things or

    toy that can bring comfort. A

    teddy, bolster, doll.

    Bring extra shirts.

    Coping StrategiesAt the Separation Time

    Give a kiss and hug. Tell him

    how much you love him,

    youre waiting outside and

    will be to pick him up soon.

    Even if this makes the child

    Separation Anxiety could be

    happen again after a long

    school holiday.

    This is perfectly normal.

    While upsetting, it's likely

    just to last a day or two and

    your child should go back tohis cheerful self at drop-off

    time quickly.
