“2020+ Vision: Writing Our Next Chapter” is the theme of our 2020 stewardship campaign. During the month of November, you will be hearing about the ways in which NSPC has made a difference in the lives of our members and your Session’s hopes and dreams for the future.

Our annual budget is a direct result of the estimates of giving that you make. A small portion of our budget results from rental income, but the overwhelming majority is based on the individual contributions of members of NSPC. Your giving is crucial to both the spiritual growth of our members and the practical cost of running a growing church.

Three years ago, Sara Boninu joined our staff as the full time Director of Youth and Family Ministry. Sara’s passion for children and youth is transforming our children and youth program here at NSPC. Through mission projects, Bible study, and comradery, they are being strengthened in their relationship with God and one another. Under Sara’s leadership, our Sunday school attendance and programs for children and youth continue to flourish.

In addition, Ting Ting Wong, our music director, has been on staff for two years. She continues to infuse our worship with joy, energy, and amazing musical talent. As a result of her creative leadership, she began a monthly “all church choir” that allows members to join with the chancel choir in singing during Sunday worship. In addition, we now look forward to two cantatas: one on the third Sunday of Advent (this year with harp accompaniment!) and another on Palm Sunday. Ting Ting continues to invest fully in our choirs and its participants.

Our most recent staff addition is Heather Impriano, who came onboard last November. We have been blessed by her energy and enthusiasm for our church and its programs. What a gift she is to me administratively, and what a gift our entire staff is to ALL of us!!

Yet, we all know that our church requires the time, talent, and treasure of every one of us to continue to grow spiritually. We are all a part of this community of faith because we want to draw closer to Jesus Christ, and we do that through our worship, programs, and fellowship. Without the investment of all our members and volunteer leaders, we would not be able to provide all of the wonderful ministry and mission that are now a part of our annual programming.

And so, with thanksgiving, I invite you to participate in creating our “2020+ Vision: Writing Our Next Chapter” as we embark on our fall stewardship campaign. During the next three Sundays, you will be hearing from Rick Weiss, chair of the Finance Committee; Jerry Schauer, an elder and invested member of our Worship Commission, chancel choir, and quartet; and Rebecca DiPersia, an incoming elder, member of our Praise Team and Worship Commission, and parent of two children who are active participants in our children and youth program.

Next week, you will be receiving a packet that will contain a letter of invitation and a pledge card. Please consider prayerfully increasing your pledge, or pledging if you have not pledged previously. What NSPC is able to accomplish during 2020 is a direct result of the pledges we make together as a community of faith.

With God’s guidance, we can assure a living, growing, and deeper experience of faith and worship for generations to come!

Faith is a journey that is complicated by our experiences, both good and bad. This fall, Pastor Jeanne will address some of the common questions all Christians ask, and together we will explore the answers the scriptures provide.

Growing Our Future Update Our Growing Our Future Committee would like to update you on the status of our building addition and renovation. Two important issues have arisen since we provided an update on Rally Day.

First, Horst Construction’s representative presented our architectural plan to the Newtown Township on September 23. Several members of GOF were present at that meeting. The township has asked us to include a walking path from the corner of our lot to the ADA accessible corner of Goshen Road and Newtown Street Road. They are also requiring additional measures for storm water management.

Second, the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) contractor selected by Horst provided an estimate that doubled their original cost.

The end result of these added costs has increased the GMP-Guaranteed Maximum Price to an unacceptable level. Therefore we have asked Horst to review the design, providing alternatives and seeking additional HVAC bids. To this end, GOF members have provided specific contractors to Horst for its consideration.

We expect to meet with Horst again in the near future with a revised budget, and once acceptable to us, we can go back to the township for permits and land development. Our new timeline has us breaking ground in early spring, as building in the winter is not ideal.

Thank you for your patience and commitment to our addition and renovation. In the end, we will have a beautiful, handicap-accessible addition that will provide new opportunities for ministry and mission for years to come.

Happy fall everyone. The colors of fall are always my favorite! November marks the beginning of the busiest time of the year. Advent season is approaching. The music program is preparing for our Stewardship season. Jerry Schauer and his trombone students will enhance our worship service on November 3rd. On November 10th, our All-Church Choir will be singing, Be Thou My Vision written by Alice Parker and Henry Purcell’s famous bell anthem, Rejoice in the Lord Always. On November 17th, our Chancel Choir will sing We Are Called – “We are called to love, We are called to serve, We are called to give.” We will be also singing a version of Give of Your Best to the Master as this introit relates to our stewardship campaign. Here are some highlighted texts:

I am sure most of you have been wondering what the choir is working on for our Christmas Cantata! I am so pleased to share with you the unique and special music we will be performing. On December 15th, we will be singing, The Road to Bethlehem. It will feature the choir, quartet and harp. In addition, Joann Mitchell and Jen Gries will be helping out with some flute descant!

The harp is such a unique instrument. It is 6 feet tall and has 47 strings that are plucked with the fingers. Our guest harpist, Megan Landfair, will be accompanying us on Angels’ Carol, This Little Babe (from The Ceremony of Carols), How Far Is It to Bethlehem?, an ar-rangement of First Noel and Pachelbel Canon in D, What Child Is This?, and Behold the Stars. I would love to invite you to sing our Cantata with us. A few church members have agreed to participate. I am hoping for more! If you can attend two Thursday evening rehearsals and the December 14th morning dress rehearsal, that’s plenty! Please reach out to me if you are interested! How often do you get to sing with a harp?! On Christmas Eve, special music will be featured during the 8 PM Service of Lessons and Carols. Solos, duets, our choir and stringed instruments will be accompanying us through the evening as well. Come to the 8 PM service after your family dinner and prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ. 3rd Grade Bibles

The 3rd graders received their Bibles in worship on October 27th. Please pray for these students as they read their Bibles and learn more about Jesus Christ: Brynn Adgate, Natalie Andress, Ruby Andrewson, Daniel Bennett-Jones, Rocco DiPersia, Sadie Kazanjian, and Grace McCarry.

Cocoa, Cookies, and Carols

One of my favorite NSPC traditions is Cocoa, Cookies, and Carols. Please plan to celebrate the Christmas season by joining in some old fashioned Christmas carols and partaking in delicious cocoa, cookies, and fun. We will be entertained by good songs, good fellowship, and good cheer. The date is December 8th at 4:00 PM. Pizza, cookies, and cocoa will be provided!

LET’S REACH OUT AND HELP THE BABIES!

This will be our 11th year “Helping Patrick Feed the Babies.” Many babies in the Delaware Valley face the risk of hunger or malnutrition because parents cannot afford the formula to feed them. Infant formula is very expensive, and to stretch the dollars, parents sometimes dilute the formula, often resulting in malnutrition. Let’s try and help these babies by donating at least one can of formula or jars of baby food between now and December 23rd. Just place it in the “Feed the Babies” box on the table outside the lounge or send the formula in with your children to Church School, and we’ll collect it. We’ll be looking for all that baby formula/baby food to come flowing in. Thanks for all your support the last 10 years of this worthy outreach program. I know you’ll find it in your hearts to continue your generous giving. Look for the box at the end of the church school hallway.

Christmas Eve Pageant

Calling all angels and shepherds! It’s hard to believe, but it won’t be long until the Christmas season is upon us, and we will be getting ready for our annual Christmas Eve Pageant. Be on the lookout for flyers and e-mails coming to you from Sara.

Youth Group met on October 6th and 13th for games, cookbook assembly, and discussions about peer pressure and the “Fruit of the Spirit.” We had fun diving into scripture to learn how to live for Christ! Adolescence can be difficult, so it is important for our youth to be rooted in Christ as

they face temptation, gossip, and pressure in school. Following each meeting, the teenagers were encouraged to practice love, joy, peace, patience, kindness. If you are in 6th-12th grade, join us each Sunday at 4 PM!

Kids’ Group held a Halloween Costume Drive and collected over 100 costumes for foster children in our community! We sorted and bagged the costumes and discussed the importance of helping others in Jesus’ name. We ended the day with snacks and games. Kids’ Group meets monthly on Sundays for pre-k through 5th grade.

Finally, we enjoyed our monthly Sunday Social. The youth carpooled to Arasapha Farms for a spooky time at the Bates Motel, corn maze, and haunted hayride. A great time was had by all!

The youth lock-in is Friday, November 8th from 6 PM-8 AM. Food, a scavenger hunt, a

It has been a relatively slow month for Buildings and Grounds. We have focused

on winterizing the sprinkler system, turning on the boiler for heat in the office and

school wings, and changing lightbulbs. Some unexpected, but minor, repair work

is underway on the steeple lights to fix a connection where water may have been

getting in.

It was another weedy year for the garden. We are planning on a further small reduction in the garden beds

to allow expansion of the gathering area, then cleaning the picnic table and moving it out from up against

the fence. A renewed focus on weeding is also needed. If you have a garden bed, please clean-up for the

winter, including surrounding paths.

It has come to our attention that the kitchen is in need of clean-up. Any food items in the cabinets and

refrigerators will be thrown away at the end of November unless clearly marked to retain. Keeping the

cabinets clean is especially important to keep pests away. Food items in the freezer will be addressed later.

Please claim and remove any non-food items (utensils, plates, etc.) that may have been lent or accidently left

in the kitchen. A formal clean-up date will be scheduled at some point in the future.

Each year secret shoppers purchase toys for Chester Eastside at the after Christmas sales. We paid $200 for the toys but they were 75% off so actually they are worth $800. The money is replaced each year with $10 donations from YOU! A poster will be in the Lounge for these $10 donations. You may take the white envelope and follow the directions which are given on the envelope. As the white envelopes are removed and donations made, a Christmas Tree begins to be revealed. We are a strong supporting church of theVillage in Bryn Mawr. Christmas is a busy time there. Toys and gifts are needed for the children in Foster Care

and those teens in Residential Living. A box will be in the Coat Room for donations. Basically any new toys, books, hats, gloves, or items for teen girls are welcome. Gift cards are also accepted. Ginny Berman and I would like to invite anyone interested to attend a meeting with us at theVillage on Nov. 16th. We attend four meetings a year at theVillage as part of the Faith in Action Council. The meeting is from 9:00-11:00. Coffee and danish are available starting at 8:45. The meetings are informative. After the business part of this meeting, we will be making artificial wreaths for the Christmas event tables in December. It goes quickly with adjournment as mentioned at 11:00.

Chester Eastside Ministries: Anytime in November. We have toys purchased and stored at the church. We need a driver to deliver them. It can be at your convenience. Chester would be called for a time that these items can be dropped off.

theVillage: A collection will begin the first week of November for theVillage. Items will need to be delivered the first week of December. Please call me if you are interested in helping. Your car can be packed during the 1st week of December with drop off between 9 and 3 PM.

Christmas Turkey Dinners for Garrett’s Way: Pam Lounsbury is organizing the dinners. Drivers would meet at the church at a predetermined date and time and drop off the dinners at Garrett's Way on Bishop Hollow Road in Newtown Square. This will require a time commitment of about one hour. PW CHRISTMAS TURKEY BASKETS

Every year about this time the PW (Presbyterian Women Circles) begin preparing for the Christmas Turkey Baskets, to be delivered to Garrett’s Way School, Newtown Square, for distribution at their discretion to needy families attending the school. Each basket (bin) will contain a bag of food items to create a complete turkey dinner, minus the turkey – not to worry, the gobbler will be in a separate bag in the basket!

As always, your help is requested to make this a successful effort. The Turkey Basket sign-up board is displayed in the lounge, to which are attached envelopes for convenience in submitting your contributions. You are contributing a specified amount (which is the estimated cost, based on past experience) for 13 of a particular food item. Then there is a separate sign-up provision for donation of a turkey or $15 toward the cost of one. If you choose to actually donate a turkey, you may do so any time, and it will be placed in the kitchen freezer. If you bring it during the week, Heather Impriano in the office will assist you with entrance to the kitchen. On a Sunday, look for Pam Lounsbury or Sue Bechtold for assistance. Keep in mind that turkeys are usually on sale around

Thanksgiving at major grocery stores.

Please make checks payable to NSPC-PW, and be sure to note on the memo line 2019 Turkey Baskets. Place your cash or check in one of the envelopes provided; put your name and giving envelope number on the front; and place in the offering plate or in the church office.

Typical of our congregation, your participation in this mission project and many others is always an overwhelming blessing. May this year’s project to feed the needy during the holidays be no different. Please check the board in the lounge and put your name in an empty slot. Dear Church Family, Mark Your Calendars…In March 2020, members, friends and family will once again be packaging meals on behalf of Rise Against Hunger. Since its inception, Rise Against Hunger (RAH) has provided over 501,172,984 meals in 77 countries. They have also provided medicine, medical supplies, medical equipment, clothing and blankets to millions of hungry, vulnerable people, as close to home as the disaster victims of September’s Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. After a successful meal-packaging event, Rise Against Hunger sends the supplies to countries with whom they have partnered. The food goes directly to schools and orphanages, which are often the sole source of daily nutritious meals for the children. Parents send their children to school for the food, enrollments rise, and these well-fed children become educated and are then able to give back to their communities. Since March of 2016, NSPC has enthusiastically packaged over 79,000 meals for hungry school children. This coming March 2020, we will once again support Rise Against Hunger and package an additional 20,500 meals. We will then be almost at 100,000 meals packaged at NSPC! Due to some highly successful fundraising last year, some excess funds remain to help support our March 20120 venture. Consequently, we will only be offering a few of our most popular events to support this mission. We hope you can participate in some or all of the following… Money Jug: The giant money jug is back in the foyer by the church office. Please consider dropping in a few coins (or cash) as you walk by. It is amazing how many meals we have been able to purchase simply from donations of your spare change.

Honor someone special with a personalized Rise Against Hunger gift card: On December 1st, 8th and 15th, purchase a gift card in honor of a special person for any number of meals for RAH (ex. $17.00 buys 50 meals.) Chester Eastside Food Collection

The basket in the Coat Room needs to be used. If you have not had a chance to donate, no worries--each week is a new week and donations are always accepted. For November and December, please think of your Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Donate things that can go towards a dinner. Chester Eastside gets turkeys donated but they need all the fixings. Feel free to donate anything non-perishable like: canned-corn, beans, cranberries, sweet potatoes, boxed potato mix, stuffing in a bag or box, muffin mix, powdered drink mix, or cans or packages of gravy. Thank you.

Fellowship Hour Presbyterians seem to enjoy food. Each week coffee, tea and a cold beverage selection are served in the Lounge following worship. Snacks of some sort are also provided. This is a wonderful time to meet people, catch up with NSPC friends and just spend a minute relaxing. As you know, volunteers are needed to make this happen. We all appreciate those that can do it. We also realize that perhaps being a host/hostess is not something everyone can do. We would like to keep this event and want to make it easy.

A container is located in the lounge for donations of pretzels, cookies, crackers, goldfish etc.--basically any non-perishable item that might be appreciated at Fellowship Hour. Then the host/hostess will not have to do as much. Baked goods are always welcome. If you can provide that on a given Sunday, please contact Kim Biddle or Jim Thomas. They are the Deacon Coordinators and would be able to mention your offer of a baked good to one of the upcoming hosts. We appreciate your help with this ongoing event at NSPC.

Fellowship Hour Hosts/Hostesses Needed

You have received invitations via the bulletin and sign up Genius to host Fellowship Hour. Feel free to work as a team on this and ask others you might know to help you. Divide up the jobs and it will be much easier. We are asking for donations toward the food part of the hosting. You can always ask someone to provide a baked good and that would save you a job. Fellowship Hour is appreciated and we would like to make the job easier. If you have any thoughts feel free to contact Sue Bechtold.

Volunteers Also Needed for Snack Packing Recently a planning meeting was held about the Fellowship Hour. Brainstorming took place to suggest some improvements in the hosting duties. It was suggested that snack bags be prepared for the children to be a better way to provide food in a sanitary and non -wasteful way. We need volunteers who would be willing to pack gold fish, pretzels, etc. in little snack bags. All could be done at home on your own time schedule. Knitting for Peace 100 Hats since February! The hats will be going to theVillage in Rosemont.

Knitting for Peace hold their weekly knitting meetings on Mondays at 10:00 AM. We meet in the Conference Room until noon. All are welcome who knit or crochet, for the full two hours or part of that time. We usually work on easy projects like hats and scarves and we decide to which organization we will donate them during the course of the year. This is a very friendly group and we have a range of knitting abilities so there is usually someone there that can help you with a dropped stitch, a mistake in a pattern and so on.

Cocoa, Cookies, & Carols Sunday, December 8th at 4:00 PM
