Our Expert’s IntroductionLondon offers an array of psychological experiences ranging from specialist museums to mental health visits, zoos or even a ghost tour. There are lots of opportunities for fabulous extra-curricular activities when you and your students can let your hair down! Choose from the wide range of possible activities or suggest your own ideas and we’ll do our very best to accommodate them.

Freud MuseumThe home of Sigmund Freud and his family until 1982, this museum helps students to understand Freud’s approach and aids exam knowledge. Students can explore Freud’s life and work, step into his consulting room (including the world-famous couch), watch ‘Home Movies’ of Freud and his family, and discuss his work with a member of the museum’s education team at times when the museum is closed to the general public. The museum can provide your group with tailored discussion sessions on a range of psychoanalytic topics. Self-guided audio tours are also available during usual opening hours. New from summer 2015, groups will be able to explore his approach to the mind through a new series of short educational videos.

The Holocaust Exhibition at the Imperial War MuseumThe informative Holocaust exhibition at the Imperial War Museum uses historical material to tell the story of the Nazi persecution of the Jews and other groups before and during World War II. An audio tour and tailored teaching session will enable groups to focus on key psychological topics such as prejudice and social influence. We highly recommend this visit. A café is also available on site for lunch, if required.

Mental Health Visits BETHLEM MUSEUM OF THE MIND

Bethlem Hospital is Europe’s first and oldest institution to specialise in mental illness. The hospital museum, Museum of the Mind, has relocated to Bethlem Hospital site, and the new premises include a dedicated learning space, permanent exhibition, temporary exhibition gallery and archive search room.

Self-guided visits are available for school groups. These 90 minute sessions include a short introductory talk and a visit to the museum which now includes sections on labelling and diagnosis, freedom and constraint, temperament, treatments and recovery. Teachers are welcome to make an advance visit and develop their own activities.

SLEEP ASSESSMENT AND ADVISORY SERVICE (SAAS)

These informative 90-minute sessions are delivered by an expert from SAAS and can focus on a range of relevant study themes, which can be tailored specifically to your group’s requirements.

Suggested topics include:• Sleep disorders (insomnia, sleepwalking & narcolepsy)• Sleep & the law• Dreaming (including Dement & Kleitman research)• The brain during sleep • Mental illness & sleep

Discussions will take place at a central London function room.

CENTRE OF CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPY WORKSHOPS

We now offer a fantastic range of exclusive psychology hypnotherapy workshops in central London. Sessions last 90 minutes and cover the followingstudy themes:

• Phobias • Stress/Anxiety • Fear • Depression (inc. suicide) • Sleep/Insomnia • Eating disorders

Some hypnosis can be included in the sessions (over 16s only). Call us to find out more.

The Psychology of a Magician (90 mins)

An exciting hands-on session based around the psychology of a magician with Dr Matt Pritchard, an award-winning magician, comedian and creative communicator. Take a closer look at what psychology teaches magicians and vice versa. You will explore how a working knowledge of the vision system and behaviour can be used to trick the eyes (perspective, retention of vision, change blindness, inattentional blindness, motion blindness etc.) plus how a magician can exploit the brain’s thinking to read and influence minds. There will be lots of opportunities to participate in simple magic tricks and experiments before returning home to test your skills on friends and family.

When Maths Meets Psychology (60 mins)

Thanks to TV shows like Derren Brown’s Tricks of the Mind psychology is as popular as it has ever been. But when maths meets psychology, as it often does, the combination can be fascinating. This is a talk about human intuition, how it can sometimes lead you astray, and how maths can help you to think critically and behave more rationally. On the way you’ll encounter a TV gameshow and some telepathy that is worthy of Derren Brown himself.

Vienna is considered to be the city of dreams because it was home to Sigmund Freud and is the birthplace of psychoanalysis. In addition, it is a city linked with the atrocities of World War II, where cheering crowds greeted Hitler’s arrival in March 1938 and the destruction of the city’s Jewish community followed. We very highly recommend the services of an NST Guide Lecturer during your tour to provide in-depth background information and to help put visits into context, adding huge benefits to your experience.

Vienna

Our Expert’s IntroductionA visit to Vienna offers the opportunity to explore many psychological themes, from the most obvious (the birthplace of psychoanalysis) to a range of other cultural treats (art and music). A visit to any foreign city invites reflections on the cultural differences that exist and the effect that these have on our behaviour. The anti-Semitic feelings prior to the war can be explored to understand the nature of prejudice.

Key Educational Visits

Sigmund Freud Museum Take a guided tour of Sigmund Freud’s former apartment and office, where you will see an exhibition documenting the life and work of the founder of psychoanalysis, as well as original furnishings, articles of daily use and antiquities from Freud’s collection. You will enter the rooms where new science was created and where Freud and his family spent 47 years from 1891 until 1938, when on 4th June, he was forced by the National Socialists to flee with his family into exile in England.

Original furnishings, including the waiting room, a selection from Freud’s collection of antiquities, and signed copies and first editions of his works provide a glimpse into Freud's biography, his cultural environment and the development of psychoanalysis. Unique film material showing the Freud family in the 1930s, is shown in a video room with a commentary by his daughter, Anna Freud.

Narrenturm (Fool’s Tower)Built in 1784, Narrenturm is Europe’s oldest building for the accommodation of mental patients. Its construction pointed to a new attitude towards the mentally ill – who began to be distinguished from the rest of society. Enjoy a fascinating one-hour guided tour covering the history of the Narrenturm, now home to the Federal Pathologic-Anatomical Museum.

The guided tour consists of information about the building’s time as a mental hospital and a walk through the fascinating pathological exhibits.

Combined Jewish Museum VisitsExcellent thoughtful tours are given at the three destinations below, providing much to reflect on about the city’s Jewish history and events of the World War II. We can arrange a combined guided tour of the three important sites below at a great value price.

• Jewish Museum – This museum provides an interesting picture of Jewish cultural and religious life in Vienna. In addition to permanent displays, including many religious and ceremonial items rescued from the Kristallnacht (anti-Jewish riots) in November 1938, its use of modern multimedia techniques also detail important figures and events in Jewish history.

• Judenplatz Area & Museum – The Judenplatz Museum provides visitors with an insight into Jewish life in medieval Vienna. Contained within the museum are the remains of a synagogue destroyed by fire in the 15th century, plus other exhibits relating to the Jewish religious and cultural life of the period.

• Stadttempel – This is the only synagogue of Vienna to survive the Kristallnacht, thanks to its design. Today, the synagogue is the main temple for a Viennese Jewish community of about 7,000 members.

Mozarthaus ViennaTake either an English audio tour or a tailored guided tour of the ‘genius’ Mozart’s apartment in Vienna and four exhibition floors. School classes are provided with comprehensive information on Mozart’s years in Vienna, which marked the high point in his creativity. Visitors can find out about the times in which Mozart lived and his most important works. Inside the apartment they may get an impression of how the Mozart family spent their lives.

Walking Tour of Key City Centre SitesOn this full day or half day walking tour you’ll visit St Stephen’s Cathedral, the centre of the medieval walled city. Your tour will continue on to the shopping area of Graben and the baroque splendor of Peterskirche, the Hofburg Imperial Palace, home of the Hapsburgs and the balcony where Hitler addressed several hundred thousand enthusiastic Austrians in March 1938. The tour isn’t complete without a walk on the Rigstrasse and a ride on a tram.

Josephinum Medical Museum Psychology Tour A tailor-made psychology-focused tour around this fascinating museum will showcase Vienna’s cultural heritage. The museum is part of the Medical University of Vienna.

Mauthausen Concentration CampTravelling by coach, groups can make the two-hour journey to visit this camp that was established August 1938 and where 100,000 people lost their lives. It was built by the SS to establish a concentration camp for men, in preparation for the impending war. The camp fulfilled two functions: to restrain opponents of Nazism by interning, torturing and killing them and also to exploit their labour to the utmost. Mauthausen was the only category III concentration camp in Austria, the classification with the most brutal detention conditions.

Students aged 14+ can either explore the memorial on their own using free audio guide systems, or a free guided tour can be arranged by NST.

Belvedere PalaceThe Belvedere Palace was home to Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand. The two palaces and gardens are spectacular and now house one of the greatest paintings in the world – Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss as well as other works by Secession artists.

Evidence of war on Europe’s Jewish population in ghettos such as Podgorze, coupled with a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, will enable students to analyse the persecution which took place. Students can consider the topics of conformity and obedience in Nazi Germany, possible psychological profiles of those involved and even discuss actual experiences with a concentration camp survivor, or relative at the Galicia museum.

Krakow

Our Expert’s IntroductionThe city of Krakow offers some powerful experiences related to conformity and obedience. The Jewish ghetto (Kazimierz), Krakow Under Nazi Occupation Museum (which tells the story of wartime Krakow), and Auschwitz-Birkenau each demonstrate the power people can have over others. This fascinating destination offers the opportunity for students to reflect on human nature and enjoy a vibrant European city.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Following the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, Oświęcim was incorporated into the domains of the Third Reich. The town’s name was changed to Auschwitz and it became the largest concentration and death camp. Today, as a museum, Auschwitz serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors of Hitler’s tyranny and a guided visit will give students a fuller view of the terrible events and conditions, also allowing consideration of key study themes, including obedience, prejudice, tyranny and much more. Auschwitz is a one hour coach journey from Krakow and is a truly emotive and thought-provoking visit. 2015 sees the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camp.

Kazimierz (Former Jewish District)This historic Jewish district was left deserted as residents were forced by Nazis to move to the Podgorze ghetto. Visit the old synagogues and the cemetery, as well as iconic Jewish sites and museums.

Podgorze (The Wartime Ghetto)In March 1941, the entire Jewish population of Krakow were crammed into this tiny ghetto as Nazi prejudice took hold. Also the location of Schindler’s Factory, students can explore the ghetto and consider the anti-Semitic events which took place here before large numbers of Jews were sent to labour and death camps.

Krakow Old TownNow a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town was entered by German forces in 1939. Museums, schools and theatres closed, arrests were made and synagogues were destroyed. The tyrannies continued until 1945 when the German army was forced to withdraw.

Around the Old Town SquareThe largest medieval town square in Europe is now a lively tourist spot and includes St Mary’s Church, the town hall tower and the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall).

Wawel HillIn a fortified position, 228m above sea level, overlooking the river and city are the castle (a former residence of Polish kings) and the cathedral. There are also archaeological remains dating back to 4th century to be seen here.

Krakow Under Nazi Occupation MuseumAlso referred to as the Schindler Museum, this visit not only tells Schindler's story but covers every aspect of the Polish and Polish-Jewish experience of occupation in a way that is hugely relevant to British students. We thoroughly recommend this excellent museum, made famous by Spielberg's film, Schindler's List.

Galicia Museum & WorkshopsPresenting Jewish history from a new perspective, this fascinating museum celebrates the Jewish culture of Galicia and commemorates the victims of the Holocaust through its moving photographic exhibition. During your visit, your students can take part in a choice of interactive workshops, including 'Choices Faced, Decisions Made: The Holocaust & Wartime Morality'. Groups can also take part in exhibition tours, lectures and much more.

Meet with a Concentration Camp SurvivorGroups have the invaluable opportunity to meet and speak with a concentration camp survivor or, a member of a survivor’s family. This is an incredible, poignant chance to hear moving eye-witness testimony and gain firsthand insight into life under Nazi rule. Common themes covered often include conflict, prejudice and the values of tolerance and understanding.

The capital city of Germany is identified in most people’s minds with events of World War II, as home to the largest Jewish community in Germany and seat of Nazi power. The year 2013 marked the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s rise to power. However, arguably, more recent events have a greater effect on what you see of the city today – the effects of the Berlin Wall which divided the city for 28 years imposing a Communist regime on the residents.

Berlin

Our Expert’s IntroductionBeing in Berlin raises many questions in one’s mind, such as how a small group came to dominate a whole population. Such questions relate, firstly, to the Nazi era when Berlin was the location of the SS headquarters and the focal point of the National Socialist Movement. The questions also relate to the Communist era when a foreign government changed and suppressed the culture of Eastern Germany. The recent history of Berlin is still clearly evident and it is impossible to walk through the city without being continually made aware of its recent past.

Nazi-Era VisitsHistorical Walking Tour of Key Nazi Sites When travelling with an NST Guide Lecturer, they can cover a number of key historical sites, placing them in the context of your curriculum and providing your group with full and colourful commentary. Key sites on your tour include:• The Reichstag • Brandenburg Gate • Holocaust Memorial • Hitler’s Bunker • Potsdamer Platz • Reich Air Ministry buildings • Unter den Linden • Topography of Terror • Checkpoint Charlie Museum • Bebelplatz (site of the book burning) • Neue Wache

Neue SynagogueWhen inaugurated in 1866, the New Synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse was one of the largest in the world and the most important in the city. Damaged during Kristallnacht, the building was destroyed during the war. The front section and dome were restored in the 1980s and now house a fascinating museum chronicling the history of the building and its congregation. There are particularly good sections on the 1930s and the wartime period.

Jewish MuseumTake a guided tour of this thought-provoking museum which chronicles the history of Jews in Berlin in a ‘mind-blowing building’ designed by the architect Daniel Libeskind. Exhibits look at life for Jewish people before the war and explore the personal experiences and life stories during the Holocaust. Here, you can also listen to interviews with people, held after the war had ended, asking them why they hadn’t acted to defend the persecuted.

Holocaust MemorialThe Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, created by architect Peter Eisenman, is an emotional and imposing addition to the landscape of central Berlin. The memorial’s 2,711 concrete slabs cover an area of 4.7 acres. Beneath the memorial is an information centre detailing the lives of murdered Jews.

German Resistance Memorial CentreSituated in the Bendlerblock, the former Wehrmacht building from which the July Bomb Plot was organised and where Stauffenberg and several of his co-conspirators were executed, this moving museum covers all aspects of opposition and resistance to National Socialism within Germany. A striking memorial to those executed on the night of 20th July stands in the courtyard where the event took place.

Berlin Bunker TourThis fascinating tour takes your students into the secret history below the city’s streets. During the tour, your group will visit a series of tunnels and bunkers beneath Gesundbrunnen U-Bahn station, providing them with a fascinating insight into the Home Front in Berlin during World War II as well as preparations made for nuclear attacks during the Cold War.

Topography of TerrorBuilt on the grounds of the former SS headquarters, take a guided or self-guided tour of this exhibition illustrating terrors and crimes of the Nazi era.

Olympic StadiumBuilt for the 1936 Olympics, this is an excellent example of Nazi architecture. This is where the black American athlete, Jesse Owens, won four gold medals, supposedly infuriating Hitler because of his race. Access to the adjacent bell tower offers an excellent vantage point to view the interior of the stadium and a panoramic view of Berlin. (Bell tower closed November to February.)

Berlin Gay MuseumPermanent and rotating exhibits document the history of gay Berlin from the heady days of the early 20th century, and persecution by the Nazis to the present day.

Fall of Communism Guided Walking TourWhen travelling with an NST Guide Lecturer, they can cover a number of key historical sites, placing them in the context of your curriculum and providing your group with full and colourful commentary. The tour includes sites in and around Alexanderplatz, concentrating on the events of September to November 1989. Your group will also visit the former East Berlin, including the Zionskirche, Gethsemanekirche and the Bornholmer Bridge.

Wallmuseum-Haus at Checkpoint CharlieFeaturing exhibitions about the legendary border crossing point, this fascinating museum includes demonstrations of how individuals smuggled themselves across the border. Here, your group will have the opportunity to explore what drove some people to go along with the collectivist culture, and others to resist.

Berlin WallThe Bernauer Strasse Memorial allows students to see remains of the Berlin Wall as well as an exhibition on Berlin during the Cold War. The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving stretch of the wall (at nearly 1.5km long) and includes the work of various artists and political cartoonists.

DDR MuseumSituated in the city centre, one of the most interactive museums in the world offers fascinating insights into daily life in the DDR. Take a virtual drive round an East German housing estate in the Trabi simulator. See the methods used to change the collective mindset, such as collective potty training.

The Stasi Museum, NormannenstrasseAt the site of the Stasi Headquarters, groups can gain a vivid insight into the huge power that this organisation wielded over citizens of the DDR. Visit the exhibition which includes the offices of key staff and learn more about the events that led to the opening of the border.

Hohenschönhausen MemorialThis former political prison for people detained by the Stasi is now a museum which covers not only the Stasi period but its origins as a Soviet Special Prison from 1946-51 and provides groups with a very authentic picture of prison conditions in the DDR.

Sachsenhausen Memorial SiteSachsenhausen was one of the earliest and most significant concentration camps in Nazi Germany. The history of the camp from its origins, development and post-WWII use by the Soviet Union is told with detailed exhibitions as well as its physical remains.

Ravensbrück Memorial SiteSituated about 60 miles north of Berlin, the extensive remains of Ravensbrück (the principal women’s concentration camp) now houses collections and exhibitions chronicling all aspects of the camp’s history. Among the thousands executed here were female members of the British spy network S.O.E. including Violet Szabo.

Casablanca, in Western Morocco, is the main city and port in the country, with a population of more than four million people. Our tours allow groups to consider the country’s differing viewpoints on psychological disorders and alternative treatment methods, and also presents a unique cultural experience. This modern city with its tall, white buildings still has remnants of the old town as well as a medina. Its mild Mediterranean climate welcomes groups throughout the year for truly memorable experiences.

Morocco

Our Expert’s IntroductionMorocco is a dream destination – a far-off land that features in films and legends. Today, of course, Moroccans, like everyone around the world, wish to be part of the 21st century whilst maintaining their links with the past. The cultural backdrop offers some interesting contrasts with our more European roots.

Casablanca Full Day Psychology VisitsModern City Life, Holistic Practices & the Jewish Community

After breakfast, your guide will meet your group and take you on a fascinating tour of the city. Visit the old town of Casablanca and the central colourful market. Continue to see the

famous Place de Nations Unies then visit the relaxed ‘Habous’ area with its selection of bazaars, markets and cafés and its vibrant atmosphere.

Next, see the esplanade of the Mosque of Hassan II with the highest minaret in the world. Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant, located on an historic fortified stronghold built in the 18th century. In the afternoon the tour continues to the Centre of Awakening of Consciousness. The centre offers a variety of natural and holistic practices (yoga, personal meditation, rebirth, primitive dance art therapy) supplied by a team of specialists. The new practices of personal development, self-seeking and ‘wellness’ are popular with urban Moroccans. Where available you will meet with a specialist for a short talk.

Later in the afternoon visit the Jewish museum. There was once a thriving Jewish community in Casablanca and the museum is the only one of its kind in the Islamic world. It is exclusively devoted to Jewish culture and

art, to enable greater understanding about the Jewish identity. You will then return to your accommodation.

Traditional Healing, Fortune Telling & Modern Treatment MethodsDepart with your guide to the old city of Casablanca, called ‘la medina’, where you will walk through the colourful souk. You will then visit a small herbal shop run by a traditional healer (or a ‘ferraga’), and learn about the fascinating treatment methods found here. Despite the development of Moroccan society, many people are still attached to traditional methods to improve their wellbeing.

You will then visit the suburb of Ain Diab, before stopping at Sidi Abderrahmane – the mysterious island of Casablanca. It is a small rocky islet just a short distance off the coast where a Holy man or saint lived in the

19th century. For his generosity, a house was built there for him but he preferred to sleep outside under the stars and, instead, his house became a home for the

pilgrims which have multiplied following his death. The place is now feared by some because it is seen as a ‘Witch Island’. Indeed, ‘Chouwafate’ (fortune tellers) now live here predicting the future through a mixture of mysticism, esoteric practices and holocausts.

You will then drive along the beautiful corniche towards the modern Morocco mall where groups can spend some free time shopping and choose from countless eateries to purchase lunch. In the afternoon you will visit a psychological hospital where groups

will listen to a short talk explaining the development of psychology in Morocco and the psychological treatments used here. Groups will

then be taken on a tour of the different departments from members of the medical team. You’ll then return to your hotel for an evening meal.

Ellis Island Immigration Museum visit & The Statue of Liberty cruise Ellis Island opened in 1892 as a federal immigration station and millions of newly arrived immigrants passed through the station. A 45-minute audio tour invites students to relive the immigrant experience as if they were the new arrivals and includes artifacts, photos, interactive displays and videos including the award winning ‘Island of Hope, Island of Tears’.

You will visit the island as part of a short boat cruise passing the Statue of Liberty, which was the first sight for the millions of immigrants.

9/11 Police Officers’ Personal StoriesHear firsthand accounts from the heroes who came to help on that day, including police officers who volunteered to go into the burning towers, who pulled victims from the rubble, and who cared for the injured and dying - and who still live with the emotional scars. Officers who responded to the 9/11 scene will speak and answer your students’ questions.

Interrogation Techniques (Reid)The Reid technique is a method of questioning subjects and assessing their credibility. The technique consists of an accusatory interview combining both investigative and behaviour-provoking questions. If the investigative information indicates that the subject committed the crime in question, the Reid Nine Steps of Interrogation are utilised to persuade the subject to tell the truth about what they did. Critics have charged that the technique can elicit false confessions from innocent persons, especially children.

New & Exclusive Police Sessions with NYPD1½ hoursNST can now offer two new and exclusive sessions from highly experienced enforcement professionals at NYPD.

Tenement MuseumThis museum tells the story of immigrant families who have lived in and around the building since the 19th century. Students can tour the building and visit the restored apartments of past residents from different time periods through the following options:

Hard Times - Tour & Discussion: Spend extended time inside the Gumpertz and Baldizzi apartments and join in a discussion about themes arising from the tour during this two-hour session. Share experiences, thoughts and family histories with your educator and fellow visitors.

Irish Outsiders: Experience the heart of the immigrant saga through the music of Irish America, then tour the restored home of the Moore family, Irish-Catholic immigrants coping with the death of a child in 1869. During this hour-long tour, your group will compare the Moore's struggle to keep their family healthy with that of the Katz family, Russian-Jewish immigrants who left their 'mark' on the building in the 1930s.

Meet the Resident: Visit the apartment of a Greek Sephardic family and meet a costumed interpreter playing 14-year-old Victoria Confino, who lived in the tenement in 1916. Visitors take on the role of newly arrived immigrants, and ask Victoria questions about adjusting to life on the Lower East Side. Designed for families, this tour allows visitors to handle household objects.

Lower East Side (Immigrant Neighborhood) Walking ToursOutside the Home: See the Lower East Side through the eyes of the immigrants who have lived here for 150 years during this 90-minute tour. Discover the towering Jarmulowsky Bank building, where immigrants deposited (and eventually lost) their life savings, the Daily Forward building, where socialists fought for worker rights, and PS 42, where generations of immigrants learned how to be 'American'.

Then & Now: For generations of immigrants, the Lower East Side wasn't just a place to find a cheap home. It was also where they learned how to start a business, build a congregation and educate their children. Discover the fascinating history of this neighbourhood during this two-hour tour and find out why it’s such an ever-changing mix of the old and the new.

9/11 Tribute CenterSelf-guided visit to museum galleries - learn about the events of 9/11 through authentic personal experiences. Five immersive environments provide first person perspective through videos, artifacts, photos and personal stories. 9/11 Memorial Guided Tours also available with this visit – guided by those who personally experienced the events.

'My September 11 Experience' at the 9/11 Tribute CenterNST groups have a unique opportunity to meet someone personally involved in the tragic events of 9/11. Students will have a chance to ask them questions and hear their own account of the day and their views. This 30-minute question and answer session follows a self-guided visit through exhibits, film, artifacts, and the voices of those who experienced the events firsthand with additional information about the affects of 9/11 and the future plans for ground zero.

September 11 Memorial visitThe 9/11 memorial was dedicated on September 11, 2011 in a ceremony for victims’ families. The memorial honours the 2,983 who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The memorial allows visitors to come together again in the spirit of unity and courage that emerged in the wake of 9/11. The memorial consists of two pools set in the footprints of the Twin Towers, surrounded by a plaza of more than 400 trees. The names of the victims are inscribed in bronze around the pools.

National September 11 Memorial Museum Opened in 2014, the museum explores the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring 9/11’s continuing significance. It demonstrates the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and its impact on communities at a local, national, and international level.

Peking Duck Banquet: A famous dish from Beijing and one that has been served since the Imperial era. A real taste of China.
