As CEO of Volunteering Queensland Inc, I am extremely proud to provide this report on National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW) 2013. This ground-breaking initiative was the first of its kind in Australia specifically dedicated to recognising, celebrating and promoting student volunteering. It was fantastic to see the profile of student volunteering being elevated and highlighted through this dedicated week, as well as promoting the significant contribution made by student volunteers. With 24 participating universities, plus numerous schools and nonprofit organisations holding 89 events - we consider the inaugural NSVW to be a resounding success. Even better - 97% of these participating organisations (who responded to our survey) have stated they would be involved again, a great outcome for the future of the initiative. The week provided an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the work students and young people are engaged in that greatly contributes to the strength and resilience of our communities. It was a time to recognise how young people are highly motivated to be involved in their communities in many ways, driven by a desire to ‘make a difference’, rather than simply by self-interests.I would like to thank all our partners, including universities and high schools across the country, Engagement Australia, the National Association of Graduate Career Advisory Services, Volunteering Australia and the Australian network of Volunteering Peak Bodies and Volunteer Resource Centres, community groups and nonprofit organisations for their support of NSVW. Their participation clearly highlights the significant interest and appreciation of student volunteering across the nation.

“It is often quoted that young people are our future. We recognise therefore that pathways to enable young people to connect with their communities in safe and meaningful ways will lead to enriching experiences for students, help build leadership skills for the future and strengthen the sense of achievement and belonging to society, through the meaningfulness of volunteering. They bring their strength and abilities to their civic participation and the value of that engagement accrues to the whole community.”It is our desire that the week will expand as a significant annual event. We trust it will continue to encourage, enable and enrich student volunteering and to showcase the valuable role students play in creating a vibrant and healthy society for all of us – and give us a ‘window of investment’ into the future of Australia.Myself and the team here at Volunteering Queensland Inc welcome your participation in the next NSVW, to be held 4 - 10 August 2014. To express your interest in taking part visit volunteeringqld.org.au/nsvw or refer to the ‘Get Involved in NSVW 2014’ section on page 10 of this report.

Thank you,

MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

PERRY HEMBURYCEO

Page 4: NSVW 2013 Report

Volunteering Queensland Inc is very happy to announce that Australia’s inaugural National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW) was an incredible success in promoting, celebrating and encouraging student volunteering - raising the profile of student volunteers in the community. Personally, I am incredibly proud to have coordinated this initiative following my predecessor Ana Radovic and with the help of an amazing team of student volunteers including Amanda Buttenshaw, Jane Courtney, Christine Loeffler, Elena Arroyo and Natalie Corbett. Not to mention all of the people across the country in universities, volunteer organisations, Volunteer State Peak Bodies and Volunteer Resource Centres whose hard work made this initiative a success. Here at Volunteering Queensland Inc we worked hard in the lead up to NSVW to maintain regular contact with all participants through our monthly communiqués, regular blog posts and the use of social media. After significant consultation with stakeholders we produced toolkits, promotional materials, and many resources including certificates, PowerPoints, posters, information sheets and invitations, to best support all the events and activities taking place around the nation. The feedback we received on these resources was encouraging: “high quality, practical, easy to source and download”; and “creative, attractive and attention-grabbing - the ability to customise the material to our individual institution was excellent”. With more general feedback on the event being that the week was “very well organised, promoted and coordinated”.“Volunteering has become more common among young people. The rate of volunteering by young people in Australia increased from 16% in 1995 to 27.1% in 2010.”

(State of Volunteering in Australia 2012, pp. 2)

Universities, schools and organisations across every state and territory of Australia took part in a diverse and exciting range of events, activities, programs and initiatives. Right across the country we saw everything from volunteering expos and fairs to films to group volunteer activities, from volunteer recognition dinners to taking part in our #NSVW13 social media campaign

to talks and workshops - all demonstrating the widespread nature of student volunteer engagement in this country.

“The success of the week highlighted a universal appreciation of the value of student volunteering amongst education providers who more and more are looking at how to best encourage and support their students to engage the wider community.”As part of this journey Volunteering Queensland Inc was able to add to a body of knowledge around best practice approaches to working with young people by releasing two popular research publications: a special Student Engagement Edition of our Innovate Research Bulletin; and Innovative Student Engagement: A perspective, which evaluates the role student engagement and student volunteering play in university and tertiary education and further provides guidelines to creating and implementing the most effective student volunteering programs. We hope that these discussions on how to ensure that volunteer student engagement continues to become more impactful, sustainable and inevitably more successful will continue and grow in the lead up and as a part of this year’s NSVW. We also hope that the following report, which highlights NSVW achievements, events, online presence and resources, will inspire you to get creative and get involved in NSVW 2014. Once more I must wholeheartedly thank our partners and supporters who helped to make this unique initiative so successful, including the universities with whom we liaised. I’d also like to make a special mention of Volunteering Australia and each Volunteer Peak Body and Volunteer Resource Centre who took part in this initiative – Thank you all for your hard work.

Sincerely,

TIMES

We provided resources and promotional material for universities and schools across Australia participating in the week.

It was designed to help them reach out to a number of key audiences, notably, students, staff, public figures and the general public.

The feedback we’ve received on these resources has been overwhelmingly positive - we plan to build on this in 2014 to make your participation even simpler and more effective.
