TENNIS SUCCESS

Great Lakes College’s boy’s tennis team enjoyed a convincing victory over Wingham High in Round 2 of the CHS

knockout.

Our team of Nathan Monk, Sam Gibson, Eli Worldon and Blue Evans cruised to an 8 sets to 0 win.

These boys were state finalists and Hunter Region champions in 2017 and they have obviously carried that form

into 2018.

The boys all conducted themselves with great sportsmanship and made the day enjoyable for themselves and the

Wingham team. They have now qualified for the Hunter Regions finals in late May and should perform well there.

UNDER 13S & 15S COUNTRY CUP RUGBY LEAGUE

On Monday the 19th March two squads from Great Lakes College competed in the annual Country Cup Competition at Taree Recreation Grounds. It was a sweltering day in the heat at Taree with each team competing in three games during the day. The boys were role models in their behaviour and excellent effort throughout the day. The under 13’s coached by Tim Alliston were undefeated throughout the day and will now qualify in the super 8's finals in Newcastle in Term Two.

The under 15’s were an understrength team with many players unavailable. However the boys with determination and effort were still able to record a win against Bulahdelah and a close encounter with Taree High. St Claire’s High School concluded the day overall winners and will go through to the finals. Tavis Felsch and Chase Nixon, both under 13 players filled in for the under 15’s and should be commended for their performances in the competition against competitors two years older.

During the day several selectors were carefully selecting the squad to be announced from the day to compete as the Manning Zone on Wednesday the 21st March. Below is the team selected.

PLAYER SCHOOL 1 Rory Murtagh Great Lakes College 2 Tom Ryan Taree High School 3 Ethan Ferguson Taree High School 4 Ryan Harrison Taree High School 5 Shaun West Taree High School 6 Darcy Alladice Bulahdelah Central School 7 Kye went Great Lakes College 8 Bailey Whitby (Captain) Gloucester High School 9 Jordan Leslie Hunter Sports High School 10 Will Markham Bulahdelah Central School 11 Jordan James Hunter Sports High School 12 Alex Forbes Taree High School 13 Harry Grant Great Lakes College 14 Nelson Jackson Great Lakes College 15 Jack Wollard Taree High School 16 Blake Jones Great Lakes College

HUNTER RUGBY LEAGUE TRIALS

On Wednesday the 21st March the Manning Zone Rugby League team travelled to Raymond Terrace to compete against the other eight regions of the Hunter aiming to make the Hunter Team to compete against North Coast in term two. In trying and extremely wet conditions the boys competed in reduced timed games and all performed with effort and desire. Unfortunately the weather did not favour our games and there were many stoppages in play and having our game lengths reduced limited the potential for the boys to shine.

The boys should all be commended on their effort and sportsmanship during the games. Boys representing Great Lakes College were : Rory Murtargh, Kye Went, Harry Grant, Nelson Jackson and Blake Jones. All will benefit from the experience in their rugby league careers.

KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT RUGBY

On Tuesday the 8th May, Great Lakes College competed in the Knight's Knockout Rugby League competition at Taree Recreation Grounds in the under 14’s and 16’s competitions. The U14's squad showed some good skill and competitiveness throughout the round robin competition, but could not hold out a very strong St Clare’s team who were eventual winners on the day.

The U16’s, with the support of several under 15’s to assist the squad ran into the St Clare’s squad in game one who were favourites for the day, but with some excellent skill and speed to open the scoring account, they led the game at the half. St Clare’s were not done with and scored some impressive tries, but a late try to Great Lakes and a sideline conversion by Eli Clarke and aggressive and relentless defence from the forward pack, particularly Harry Grant with some crunching tackles, Great Lakes held onto the win.

Great Lakes U16’s concluded the day undefeated with victories over Taree High School and Wingham High School and will now progress as Manning Zone Champions and will compete at Stage two later this term.

SERVING UP SUCCESS, AGAIN

Great Lakes College’s boy’s tennis team have won the Hunter Regional title for the second year in a row. The boys

won a series of finals against the strongest teams from Newcastle and the Hunter at the recent finals day.

The team consists of Nathan Monk, Sam Gibson, Eli Worldon and Blue Evans; the same combination that won last

year and finished fourth at the State Finals. The boys had cruised through the early rounds and had a walk-over in

their quarter final. In the semi final they played Tomaree High School and won by the remarkable score of 8 sets to

nil, with a total of 48 games to 3.

The final against Lambton High School was closer and featured some very high level tennis. The teams split the

doubles sets and then Great Lakes College won two of their singles. The crucial match was the number 3 singles,

won in a tight struggle by Eli. That gave Great Lakes College a nearly unassailable 4 sets to 2 lead. The reverse

doubles proved to be a bit of a formality, resulting in a reasonably comfortable win for Great Lakes College.

The boys all displayed some high quality tennis skills and teamwork, plus their ability to be good sportsmen and

fine ambassadors for the school is outstanding. The team has now qualified for the State Finals, to be held at

Ulladulla in August, where they once again, should perform well.

EVONNE GOOLAGONG INDIGENOUS TENNIS DAY

Ex Great Lakes College student Kyah Stewart, National Co-ordinator of the Evonne Goolagong Foundation, was at

the Development Camp held at Forster Tennis Club on 28th March 2018 with her two young daughters. Kyah is

pictured with several of the current Indigenous students from Great Lakes College Forster Campus. Kyah attended

an Evonne Goolagong Tennis Camp when she was a student at Great Lakes College Forster Campus. The students

had a great day, learning new skills and listening to Evonne’s stories.

Evonne Goolagong is a former number one world tennis player during the 1970’s. She is a proud Wiradjuri

woman. Following her career, Evonne and her husband established the Goolagong National Development Camp for

Indigenous girls and boys. They have continued to run the program since conception in 2005. Using tennis as a

vehicle to promote better health, education and employment, the program has awarded school scholarships,

produced university scholars, tennis players, coaches, sports administrators and has helped with employment

placement. Kyah was accepted into this program and continues to work with the Development Camp as National

Co-ordinator. She is an inspiration to our students!

HEALTH CAREERS FORUM

Last term, a group of Year 10 students attended the Health Careers Forum at Taree. The forum was hosted by Newcastle University at the Manning Education Centre. The morning started with quick presentations from various health professionals and academics after which students were able to choose to attend 3 half an hour workshops from a possible 9. These were designed to give students a taster of what it is like to work as a Doctor, Nurse, Physiotherapist, Pharmacist, Dietitian, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist or Radiographer. The sessions were extremely informative and really got our students thinking about what a career in health really means.

TARONGA ZOO

Back in March, a large group of Year 10 students were up and on a bus at 5am for a trip down to Sydney for the Meet a Keeper program at Taronga Zoo.

Students were given a range of presentations in the zoo's new lecture theatre including some

inspirational stories from some of Taronga Zoo's current zoo keepers. Information was given regarding pathways into animal care and associated professions and our students were given the opportunity ask questions to the Taronga Zoo staff. They were then treated to a 'behind the scenes' tour of the Seal Theatre where they were shown how the keepers look after the seals and get them to perform during their daily shows. A great day was had by all.

WHITE CARD COURSE

In Week 10 of Term One, 17 Year 10 students completed the WHS Construction Induction Safety Course. The qualification gives students their 'White Card' which enables them to carry out any kind of construction work and is a legal requirement of a number of trade occupations.

Any student who did not complete the course but is interested in getting their White Card should see Mr Keough in the Careers Room. Please note that students who complete the online White Card course will not be

eligible to go on work experience or apply for school based apprenticeships as a tradesperson. They must complete a face to face course and should see Mr Keough for more details.

WOLLOTUKA

INSTITUTE -

IBELIEVE PROGRAM

On Tuesday 8th May, our Year 7 Aboriginal students took part in workshops delivered by a representative from the University of Newcastle's Wollotuka Institute. The 'iBelieve' program had a focus on motivating students to set

high and realistic goals for themselves and included interactive activities designed to empower students to make educated choices about their future aspirations and pathways to learning. Students were also given demonstrations on how to use online resources such as the 'My Big Tomorrow' website which can be used to get students to start thinking about the various career options that are available to them. There was also a number of career related practical based activities that took place which were enjoyed by all.

STUDENTS FROM 7B EXCEL IN WRITING COMPETITION

Students’ creative writing submissions from Forster Campus’ 7B to the Great Lakes

Advocate’s Tell Me a Story Writing Competition have been applauded by local authors

for their originality and imaginative flair. Receiving particular acclaim were the stories

from Ellie-May Lang and Ella Galle who were awarded an Excellence Award (Ellie-

May) and a Highly Commended Award (Ella) for their submissions.

The competition was designed to inspire young writers and provide them with the

unique opportunity to have their story published in the local newspaper and at the

same time win a cash prize. The competition received entries from more than 55

students from the Great Lakes, Barrington and Taree area.

The competition was judged by a panel of school teachers, the Forster Writers’ Group and Great Lakes Advocate

journalist and published children’s author, Sally Codyre.

THE FUTURE IS IN SAFE HANDS...

It’s been an eventful semester for Commerce students at Forster Campus - with students participating in both the

N.S.W. Law Society ‘Mock Trial Competition’ and the Australian Stock Exchange ‘ASX Shareholders Game’.

The N.S.W. Law Society ‘Mock Trial Competition’ has seen our Year 10 Forster Campus pitting their legal minds

against Year 11 Legal Studies students in two trials so far.

The students have argued a civil case against Hunter Valley Grammar School and a criminal case against Gloucester

High School. The trials have been fiercely contested with students performing the roles of barristers, solicitors,

witnesses and court officers to support the presiding ‘magistrate’ assigned to the trial.

The students are currently preparing their next case, another criminal trial to be heard at Wauchope. This will

surely be one to watch as the student barristers ‘object’ their way through the opposition’s cross-examinations.

Not to be outdone by the legal side, the financial side of Forster Campus has been participating in the ASX

Shareholders Game. Our syndicates have all outperformed their previous efforts and risen through the ranks in this

game – with one syndicate cracking the ‘top 100’ of syndicates in the state during the competition.

The knowledge, effort, skill and confidence of these students lead you to believe that the economic and legal future

of our nation is most definitely in safe hands. Well done, Team Commerce!

TUNCURRY CAMPUS PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to Term Two. A number of staffing changes have taken place.

Mrs Kirkland commenced at Tuncurry Campus as the Head Teacher Wellbeing. Mrs Kirkland joins us from Forster Campus and will be working closely with the Year Advisers and the Boys and Girls Advisers to ensure our wellbeing and support programs are being run effectively. She will also be coordinating the transition program of Year 6 students into Year 7 for 2019 as well as overseeing the Social Science Department.

Recently interviews were held for the Head Teacher PDHPE position. I am pleased to announce that Mr Brian Belic has accepted the position. Mr Belic has taught in a number schools around the state and brings with him a wealth of experience in curriculum and administration. Mr Belic will commence from the start of Term Three.

Mrs Hammond has commenced Maternity leave. We wish her all the best with the birth of her child. Mrs Hammond will be replaced by Mrs Summers.

Miss Leaudais gained a permanent position at Duval High School. Miss Leaudais had been our Learning and Support Teacher for the last 15 months. She worked tirelessly with staff and students to ensure our students were provided with every opportunity to achieve success. We wish her well for the future. Mrs Keough returns 0.5 from maternity leave to replace her and Mrs Lupton has also joined us 3 days per week as a Learning and Support Teacher.

The College held its Anzac Ceremony on the last Thursday prior to the holidays. I received many positive comments from College staff, parents and invited guests on the performance of our School Captains and the overall ceremony. Thank you to Mr Pelley for is organisation of the ceremony.

The Tuncurry Campus captains (pictured left), Jesse Blake, Joel Elliot and Ebony Cavanough also attended the ANZAC Service at Club Forster on ANZAC Day.

Last term the Campus nominated and applied for Isaac Smith to be a beneficiary of a Variety Club award. I was informed that Isaac was successful and would be receiving a laptop to assist him with his studies and achieve his career goals. Isaac, along with his carers, myself, Mr Freeman and Keegan Dodd attended the Variety Club dinner on 20th March, at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, where he received his laptop. Isaac spoke extremely well in front of over 350 people from Variety and was an outstanding representative of the College.

Congratulations Isaac.

Already this term we have had a number of events and extra-curricular activities.

During Week 3, Year 7 and 9 will be sitting the NAPLAN tests. At the time of writing this report, the students had two of the three examinations and their behaviour has been exemplary. The results will be available later in the year and will help drive our future directions in assisting our students to achieve positive outcomes.

On the sporting field the campus and College representative teams in Rugby League and Netball have done extremely well progressing through to the next stage of their respective competitions. Look out for match reports in this and upcoming newsletters.

The College Athletics Carnival was held in Week 2 at the South Street oval. Congratulations to Mrs Whitbread, Mr Ieroianni and Mr Martin for their organisation of an excellent carnival.

The Campus Years 9 and 10 Debating team had a very impressive Round One win over Taree High School. Mrs Donegan has put together a very talented team and I look forward to hearing about their success in the upcoming debating rounds.

At our first Celebration Assembly for the term Mr Bromhead, Member for Myall Lakes, presented our Campus leaders with leadership medals. Thank you to Mr Bromhead in attending our ceremony and recognising the headwork and dedication of our captains.

Finally, the Semester One examinations will be held in Week 5. Students will receive their exam timetable early in Week 4. I encourage all students to make time to prepare for these exams and give themselves every opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability.

Principal (Relieving)

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term Two is always a busy time for students and staff at school. Students will be formally assessed on their learning

for the first half of the year and will receive reports at the culmination of the semester. Our official examination

period is during Week 5. Students will receive notification if they are completing an examination in any of their

courses. If students are unable to complete an examination or assessment task in the set time, they are required to

complete an illness/misadventure form which, if approved, may enable them to complete/submit the task in

advance or after the due date. Students can obtain illness/misadventure forms from their classroom teachers and

subject head teachers beforehand.

At Tuncurry Campus, we monitor student attendance in a number of ways. Parents and caregivers will be aware

that we send an email notification when a student is marked absent at the beginning of the day, and we appreciate

the prompt responses that we receive explaining student absences. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to

provide the school with an explanation for any absences as soon as they occur – our departmental policy indicates

that explanations for absences must be registered within seven days and cannot be changed after this time.

The vast majority of students at Tuncurry Campus adhere to our College uniform policy, and we acknowledge the

parents and caregivers who ensure their children have the correct uniform and footwear for school each day. We

also acknowledge that from time to time, students may not be able to wear full school uniform for a brief period. If

they are unable to be in the correct uniform, students are required to provide a note indicating the reason and the

time frame when they will be able to be back in full school uniform.

We understand that parents and caregivers may sometimes have concerns or queries about their child’s learning or

progress at school. The first point of contact for most matters should be directed to the appropriate Year Adviser.

The Year Advisers for each year are: Year 7 – Mr Kingsley Pursch; Year 8 – Mr Simon Patterson; Year 9 – Ms Danielle

Buttsworth; Year 10 – Mr Jock Webb.

2018 PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE

On Tuesday 1st May our year 10 debate team debated in the first round of the 2018 Premier’s Debating Challenge.

The team consisted of Tara McLaughlin as first speaker, Ashley Thompson as second speaker, Jesse Blake as third

speaker, myself as silent speaker (team advisor) and Ebony Cavanough as reserve and chairperson. The team that

we were debating against was the year 9 debate team from Taree High School.

The topic for our debate was “That teachers should be allowed to check students’ bags.” We argued the affirmative

side of the debate with Taree as negative.

Throughout the debate there were many strong, thought provoking ideas and points put forward by both teams

and many fiery rebuttals were argued as well. We had the 9.1 English class to watch us and they were a brilliant

audience to practice in front of.

By the end of the intense debate we were all anxious – and a bit unsure – about the outcome and who the winner

was. However thankfully the adjudicator awarded us with the win (which was decided upon mainly because of the

amount of content that was argued by the teams)!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Donegan, on behalf of the whole team, for being such a

knowledgeable and supportive debate coach during our debate meetings and preparation for the debate – we look

forward to our many debates to come! :)

Our next debate will be against the Bulahdelah debate Team One on Wednesday Week 6 Term Two where we will

be debating a topic to do with sports and after that we will be debating against their second team with a topic

about politics.

Wish us luck in the next two rounds!

SURVIVOR SHELTERS

The Survivor Elective encompasses an array of practical applications throughout the course, one of which is the

‘Shelters from Scratch’ component. Students using their knowledge of shelters from the theory based lessons

design and build shelters solely using natural material from the southern area of the college. Students apply their

knowledge and focus on the following major aspects, suitable size, strength, insulation and water proofing which

are all tested to conclude the topic. Below are some of the finished products

SENIOR CAMPUS UNE OPEN DAY EXCURSION

In Week 2 of this term 16 Year 12 students attended the

University of New England Open Day. We travelled with

other students and staff from Bulahdelah Central School.

Students had the opportunity to talk to ex-Great Lakes

College students who are currently studying at UNE and

to take part in guided tours of the residential colleges as

well as the academic areas. Information sessions were

run on applying to UNE, Early Entry and scholarships.

Course advice was available from each faculty area and

information sessions, tours and hands on activities were

provided by Science and Technology, Animal House and

Glasshouse areas, Medicine, Natural History museum,

Law school, Business school, Nursing lab, Oorala

Aboriginal Centre and the Museum of Antiquities (which

is Australia’s only regional archaeology museum).

This opportunity will be offered to Year 12 students each

year at minimal expense.
