PORSCHE SWEEPS DAYTONA

IMPROVING 911 SOLEX CARBERATORSFOR HIGH-RPM EFFICIENCY

by gregorgi dufelfotz

Most people ist familiar mit ze synchronization of ze

carberators at ze idle speeds. It is our intention to educateyou turkeys higher by disclosing herein ze secrets of zecarberator synchronization at ze high engine speeds. In orderto make ze engine run efficiently at ze high-rpm, ve must beaware of ze completely different condition related to zis area.Da first problem you is gonna have is gettin ze high volumeof air to ze carberators. Ze factory air cleaners (unexcelledas dey is) is a compromise at best' Our extensive floor

studies in our research facilities have shown zat ze Borgward

turboinductionsystem for air filtration can handle ze job mitno problems. For ze uninformed of you, dis system vuz availableon ze 1939-1940-1/2 Borgward industrial engines. Dis carries

J. B. Whitney part number 789 at a cost of $639.93.

Next, ve must isolate ze carberators from ze manifoldsin order to prevent da fuel from "spoilin' ven it's boilin',"

caused by ze high-frequency vibrations at high-rpm. Ve got zetrick set-up for you in John-Deere part number AVCDFTN14. Dis

little honey absorbs ze shock between ze body und ze chassis onzose "big muthers" you see pullin' those plows around. Dese

babies are so big you can make 18 units from one AVCDFTN14. Ve

realize zat dese cost $921.04 each, but if you find two other

enthusiasts to share ze expense, ze cost becomes more reasonable.

Since ze Factory used nine different kinds of Solex manifolds, you must pick it and cut to fit.

Da next problem you is gonna have is gettin' fuel to dose

little buggers. Ve can easily change da fuel pump flow rateby svitchen to an actuating rod mit a little more leverage.Ve like da one out of d(a Hillman Imp mit da high-speed touringkit. It vill take two of dese sukkers to make one vich ist long

Page 6: NtA. V1 - mav.pca.orgmav.pca.org/slipstream/ss_apr77.pdf · you for all your good wishes. Pearl and Leon *Pa nt e b: For 1961 356B Cabriolet Super 1600, two worn but usable ceramic

enough for da 911. Ze pivot hole vill have to be enlargedby 5 or 6 mm. Install using Duckha 214/422-4834a superior lubricant under extreme c IIw

Other items to be considered by ze more meticulous driver

are: relocation of ze mechanical fuel pumps to da empty gasheater well in ze trunk. Dis vill greatly improve vaporization

through cooling. If you ist unfortunate enough to have ze gas

heater or an air conditioner mounted in here, denn you are

Sheisse-out-of-luck!

Also helpful vould be ze addition of VW emulsion tubesQZO 101.306.S112 at a cost of $149.38 each (dey ist made outof pig iron, so be careful venn you ist foolin' mit 'em.)

Be very careful venn you are breakin' in dese new tricks,

as da tremendous acceleration vill push you back into your

newly padded seats. But, best of all, you vill feel da vertigo

from knowin' you ist drivin' a PORSCHE.

Yours in speed,

Gregorgi Dufelfotz

A WORD OF THANKS...

We cannot adequately express our gratitude for the plaque

of appreciation given to us at the March meeting. Our nine years

in this Region have been great and any contributions we may have

made have been repaid many times through friends like you.

The plaque will have a prominent place in our next home and

we honestly invite you to come visit us in Fort Smith. Thank

you for all your good wishes.

T ov c K clnt p~e ti tionPORSCHE SWEEPS DAYTONA

Despite the loss of the factory Porsche Turbo 935, Porschesswept the field at the 24 Hours of Daytona, placing eight carsin the top ten finishers. Porsches finished 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8,9, and 10.

Hurley Haywood teamed with John Graves and Dr. Dave Helmick

in a supposedly outclassed Porsche Carrera RSR to take top honors

at an average speed of 108.801 miles per hour.

Italians Martino Finotto and Carlo Facetti piloted a PorscheTurbo 935 to second place while another 935 co-driven by ReinholdJoest and Bob Wollek finished third. The Joest/Wollek 935 hadled most of the race until giving up the lead during a long pitstop at the 21 hour mark.

Favorites Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass held the early lead in

the same factory Porsche Turbo 935 which they piloted to the WorldManufacturers' Championship in 1976. Mass crashed the 935 intothe wall at the east bank shortly before the 4 hour point. An

incredible effort by both mechanics and drivers saw the car pull

back into second place with about 8 hours remaining. Bad luck

struck again as a tire blew and Mass hit the wall in the same place

destroying the right side of the car.

Other Porsches in the top ten included (4) Brad Friselle/

George Dyer, Carrera RSR; (7) Bob Hindson/Frank Carney/Dick

Davenport, 911S; (8) Ray Gage/Bill Alsup/Richard Weiss, 9112;(9) Charles Mendez/David Cowart/David Panaccione, 911T; and (10)Peter Gregg/Jim Busby, Turbo Carrera RSR.

ED MAYO WINS E PRODUCTION

In the opening event of the 1977 season, PCA/MR member Ed Mayo

of Por-Sha fame, took the checkered flag at the SCCA National held

at Greater Southwest Airport. The Slipstream Technical Editor

not only garnered first place honors in E Production, but also

shaved a full second off the E Production lap record with a time

of 1:54.5 in his 1960 356B Roadster.

Its been nearly three months since I was gently nudged into

the leadership role for PCA-MR. The position was approached with

a bit of anticipation, not having previously even been listed on

the Slipstream masthead as a board member or chairperson, but the

experience has been for the most part very enjoyable. It is

flattering to know that you, the members of PCA-MR, saw fit tochoose me as your President. Perhaps it was felt by some that PCA-

MR was run by a group of insiders, and the best way to remedy this

problem was to bring in a new man. It is a totally different view

from this side of the speakers stand. Gone are the carefree dayswhen I could choose to attend an event or meeting or do something

else. It is my observation that time after time the same people

volunteer.

It is most encouraging to meet new members at meetings as well

as see the "regulars." I would encourage those new members in our

Club to actively participate in this year's upcoming events. Itwould also behoove members to make a special effort at meetings to

get to know these new members. They must surely feel left out of

the group watching the "regulars" exchange tales of their latestengine rebuild, or "best time" at a recent autocross. Next meeting, why not pick out an unfamiliar face and make him or her feel like a

"regular."

Maverick Region is most fortunate to have an outstanding group

of board members for 1977. We are off to what promises to be an

excellent year, but we need your help in more ways than just parti-

cipation in meetings and- activities. If you have a gripe or a

suggestion, please make it known to an officer or chairperson. So

let's have some solid input on what you, the members, would like to

see in your Porsche Club.

While we're on the subject of enthusiastic members, I want to

say so long to Leon and Pearl Cowan, two of our most steadfast and

enthusiastic members. The plaque presented to them at the March

meeting stands as a small measure of our appreciation for thiscouple's years of unselfish service to the Maverick Region of PCA.

Leon and Pearl, all of us will miss you both.

Richard Corbeille was my first personal contact with PCA-MRwhen I telephoned for information about the Club several yearsback, and he and Nancy have held many positions in the Club. Theyare also leaving the Region and we regretfully say good-bye to them.

Hope to see everyone at the April meeting.isn't too early to start thinking about CS III.Happy Porschering!

NAPD DRIVING SCHOOL

This month's activity will give Maverick Region Porsche-Pushersan opportunity to hone their driving skills at the National Academyfor Police Driving (NAPD.) The asphalt course contains plenty of

off-camber turns, tight, decreasing radius bends and short straights;

it bears a resemblance to the Grand Prix of America course in

Grand Prairie. The school will be held at the NAPD facilities inWilmer, Texas (see map), Sunday, April 17, 1977, and will start

at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Bring your car; helmets are advised. The

course will take 8 hours, with an extra hour for lunch at a road-side cafe of your choice. According to Dick Turner, the noon-timebreak will be appreciated by the participants as the pace is fairlyintense. The course fee is $25.00.

In order to maintain a good instructor-"student" ratio, the

class size will be limited to 20 individuals. Since we anticipate

that more than 20 folks may want to take the course, a second

session will be held at a future date (which will be announced at

the April meeting.) Therefore, it will be necessary to make a

reservation for the April 17 event. Call John Halla, 214/422-4834(H)or 214/238-5454(W) for reservations and information.
