Radioactive decay - A nuclei that emit particles and energy

Types of Radiation

Nuclear Reaction- the resulting event when the energy of number of neutrons and protons changed in a nucleus.
When Uranium-238 undergoes alpha decay, an alpha particle is emitted and the resulting nucleus is Thorium-234. Thorium can undergo beta decay to produce protacinium-234 and a beta particle.
Critical Thinking:
• Explain why burning methane is not a nuclear reaction, why the alpha decay of Uranium is.
Half-life- Time required for half of the atom in any given quantity of a radioactive isotope decay.

Nuclear Medicine
Radioactive isotope is injected into the patient. This radioactive isotope is attached to a molecule that will accumulate in the target tissues. When the isotope decays, it produced positrons. These positrons annihilate nearby electrons producing gamma rays. The PET scanner detect the gamma rays, and the data is used to make a 3 dimensional map of the isotope distribution.

FOOD IRRADIATION TECHNOLOGY
• exposing the food to the gamma rays of a radioisotope -- cobalt-60.
• does not change the quality, flavor or texture of the food.
• food never comes in contact with the radioisotope so it is never at risk of becoming radioactive.
