Nucor Steel Memphis Implements Quality Management System With SharePoint

Challenge

As an ISO 9001 certified company, Nucor must be able to reliably document its procedures regarding quality and safety, and it must maintain that documentation in an easily accessible format. Nucor also follows rigorous training guidelines for employees, documenting that all new hires are properly instructed in the company’s quality processes. Nucor Steel Memphis needed a cohesive solution to address these issues and ensure end-to-end process documentation management and control.

Solution

Abel Solutions proposed designing a document repository and management system centered on SharePoint. A single, computerized document repository houses all existing documents relating to ISO quality processes, including control documents and records, internal audits, training documents and corrective/preventative (CAR/PAR) action requests.

The solution also incorporates tightly integrated workflows to route and track new documents through authoring, modification, and approval processes before accepting them into the quality document library. If existing documents require modification, workflows ensure they are properly routed and approved. A

tracking system for specialized documents, such as CAR/PAR action requests, facilitates tracking for ISO compliance.

Abel Solutions also implemented an employee training database. Each employee must read the quality documentation that applies to their specific role within the organization and acknowledge they have done so. When new quality and safety training classes become available, the system tracks whether workers in specific, related employment classifications have successfully completed the training. On an individual basis, the system monitors each employee’s training records to ensure they are adequately instructed for their particular assignment.

Results

Even though Nucor selected SharePoint as a standard for at least 12 facilities, Nucor Steel Memphis is enjoying bonus features not employed at other locations.

For instance, instead of relying upon an email approval process to physically update the training records like they do in Decatur and at other plants, Nucor Steel Memphis benefits from updates made in real time. Changes made over night at a plant are available to personnel the next morning.

Having access to the most current documented process is key to maintaining quality management standards, something that has become especially complex inside of Nucor Steel Memphis where the number of documents has grown exponentially.

Now anytime a teammate needs a work instruction or process, they can go to this portal and get the most current information.
