The 70-year-old star start- ed his showbusiness career as a folk singer before de- veloping the stand-up act that made him famous and led to a TV and film career. His spokeswoman said: ‘‘Billy has been assured by experts that the findings will in no way inhibit or affect his ability to work.’’ The Glasgow-born star has become an in-demand character actor with roles including starring along- side Judi Dench in Mrs Brown and playing a dwarf warrior in the forthcoming Hobbit movies. There is no cure for Par- kinson’s and scientists have not worked out why people get the condition. Former Territorian Chris Hemsworth in a scene from Rush Picture: AP Nuding up main danger for Chris By PETER MITCHELL TORONTO: James Hunt was the British golden-haired For- mula One champion of the 1970s — a barefoot playboy who lived a life of booze, drugs and many, many women. To portray Hunt in the new biopic Rush, directed by Ron Howard, Australian actor Chris Hemsworth had a long list of things to do to prepare. Hemsworth spent four weeks on the track learning how to drive an F1 car at high speed. After packing on 10kg of muscle to play superhero Thor just a few months ear- lier, the hulking 191cm tall former Territorian had to shed 14kg to squeeze into the thin F1 car. Hemsworth also had to master Hunt’s hyperactive fidgeting, mannerisms and accent. All of the above was easy compared with one oth- er aspect of the role. ‘‘Probably the nude scenes,’’ Hemsworth, when asked what the toughest part of the role was, laughed dur- ing an interview at the Toronto Film Festival. ‘‘They were more intimidating.’’ Sex was a big part of Hunt’s life, with the driver reportedly bedding 5000 women, some- times just minutes before he slipped into the cockpit of his F1 car and raced against great rival Niki Lauda. That meant Hemsworth had to shed his clothes in the film, something that prob- ably explains why Rush, set in the 1976 F1 season and fol- lowing Hunt and Lauda as they fight for the world cham- pionship, scored so high with female audiences during early test screenings. Howard and screenwriter Peter Morgan, whose resume includes The Queen and Frost/Nixon, searched high and low for an English actor to play Hunt — but simply couldn’t find one. ‘‘James Hunt’s beauty was he is very un-English,’’ Morgan explained. ‘‘In England we do sexy men in a different way. ‘‘We do Mick Jaggers and people like that. ‘‘We do spiky, clever, weird guys who are charismatic. ‘‘We don’t do gorgeous, blond, confident males with swagger who look like they just walked off the beach and that’s what James Hunt loo- ked like. ‘‘He was this Adonis who would walk around barefoot. ‘‘We couldn’t find anybody, so of course we had to find an Australian.’’ Hemsworth, 30, who is tipped to get an Oscar nomi- nation for his performance, long ago gave up the playboy lifestyle himself. Married to Spanish actress Elsa Pataky since 2010, the couple has a one-year-old daughter, India Rose. To get an idea of what type of a life Hunt, who died of a heart attack aged 45, lived, Hemsworth looked back to his early days when, as a 19-year-old, he moved from Melbourne to Sydney to be on the long-running Australian soap Home & Away. ‘‘All of a sudden I was on TV five nights a week and there was all of this fame and craziness that came with it,’’ Hemsworth said. Rush opens in Australian cin- emas on October 3. Thriller in WA nets bagful of baddies PERTH: Australian actor Bryan Brown will play a corrupt cop in a crime thril- ler being shot in Perth star- ring English comedian Si- mon Pegg, the production team has revealed. Shooting began on Kill Me Three Times this week and will continue for about six weeks at 10 West Australian locations, including the small fishing and tourist town of Lancelin, 110km north of the city. Directed by Kriv Stenders of Red Dog fame, the film is set in a surfing town where a young singer, played by Elysium star Alice Braga, is the link between three tales of murder, blackmail and revenge. Pegg plays a mercurial assassin hired by her wealthy husband, played by Zero Dark Thirty and Un- derbelly star Callan Mulvey. But there’s more than one person gunning for her. Animal Kingdom’s Sul- livan Stapleton has been cast as a gambling addict who attempts to pay off his debts through a risky life in- surance scam, while Teresa Palmer, who acted in Warm Bodies, plays a small town Lady Macbeth who master- minds the scheme. Brown also tries to get his cut. Neighbours regular Luke Hemsworth is Braga’s love interest, a local surfer who hopes to rescue the young woman from Pegg’s telescopic sights. ‘‘Kill Me Three Times is a great script and the chance to work with Kriv Stenders in Perth made the whole thing an opportunity I did not want to miss out on,’’ Pegg said.
