The mutation was called ob/ob (i.e., the mice had two alleles of the obese gene). The next piece of the puzzle was heralded by the parabiosis experiments of Dr. Douglas Coleman, which used two varieties of obese mice -- the familiar ob/ob, and a new mutant called db/db -- and implied that the blood contained a “satiety factor” that the ob/ob mice weren’t able to produce, and the db/db mice produced in massive abundance but couldn’t react to. In 1994, as the culmination of eight years of toil, Dr. Friedman identified this very factor -- which he named leptin, after the Greek word for “thin.” Having determined the factor responsible for regulating hunger (or the lack thereof), Dr. Friedman then moved to identify the tissues in which this particular hormone was expressed, and found that satiation was determined by adipocytes, once thought to be little more than storage vessels for surplus fat. In fact, adipocytes are now known to regulate the blood concentration of leptin, informing the brain of the body's current energy reserves and allowing us to tread the (Continued on Page 3) Bilkent News BY SENA KAYASÜ (ARCH/II)

Giuseppe Verdi was an ItalianRomantic era composer. Today, he isremembered primarily for his operas, such as “Rigoletto,” “La Traviata” and“Aida.” The phrase “Viva Verdi” comesfrom a slogan that was born in Italy in1859; it is an acronym for “Viva VittorioEmanuele Re D’Italia” (“Long live VictorEmmanuel King of Italy”), with VictorEmmanuel II being the king who unitedItaly under a single rule for the first timesince the sixth century. Verdi had activelysupported the struggle for the country’sunification as a participant in theRisorgimento movement. Bilkent Instructor’s Documentary NamedBest at Film Festival in US(Continued from Page 1)His film “Mösyö” centers around Cevdet Öğüt, anantiques dealer who sells secondhand items inAnkara’s İtfaiye Meydanı (a small area of shops, most ofwhich deal in antiques and secondhand goods).According to nearby shopkeepers, Öğüt has adistinctive grasp on general knowledge and a uniqueperspective on life. He is especially important in hiscommunity for his ability to draw attention to manyvalues that are no longer appreciated. The movie offersa portrait of Öğüt, who is known among his friends and neighbors as“Mösyö,” possibly in reference to his role as one who reminds others ofnearly forgotten, classical values.

(Continued from Page 1)It took one day to finish with a crewof 15 people, most of whom wereGüçlü’s peers from COMD. Thecompletion of the full movie, with theaddition of sound and montage, tookuntil January 2013. The sound aspectof the movie was done by COMDInstructor Ufuk Önen, who teachesthe Sound Design course in thedepartment. The film is 2 minutes 16 secondslong. For the creation process, whichincluded filming and editing, therewas no external budget. However, aninternet campaign was launchedafterward for financial help to apply

to festivals. This enabled the makersto apply to many international filmfestivals. So far, the film has been acceptedby five festivals, including the 50thAntalya International Altın PortakalFilm Festival, the 49th ChicagoInternational Film Festival, theWoodstock Film Festival, the CalgaryInternational Film Festival and theSan Fransisco International ShortFilm Festival, with Chicago,Woodstock and Calgary being three ofthe most prominent festivals in theworld. (Continued from Page 1)fine line between obesity andstarvation. These seemingly inert cells not onlykeep track of energy intake andexpenditure levels, but also serve torestore the balance when the body weight deviates from the optimum.Force-fed mice, for example, stopfeeding voluntarily and are soonrestored to their original weight whenleft to their own devices, while leptin-deficient obese mice become as leanand nimble as their healthy littermateswhen given injections of this hormone. This effect is just as pronounced inhumans: when a leptin-deficient four-year-old was given a test meal, hehappily consumed 2,000 calories’ worthof food -- about the daily intake of anadult human male. But once hiscongenital leptin deficiency wasidentified and treated, he rapidly shedhis excess pounds and ate no more thana healthy child his age. The effects of leptin aren’t merelylimited to food intake, however: as a keyregulator of satiation, it is notsurprising that leptin plays a criticalrole in the control of many energy-intensive processes, including fertility, the immune response and activitylevels. Dr. Friedman’s research has

demonstrated that certain fertilityrelated disorders, such as hypothalamicamenorrhoea, can also be cured byexogenous injections of leptin. While Dr. Friedman has done muchto elucidate the function of leptin, thestory of this staggeringly versatilehormone is far from over, and hislaboratory is still hard at work todetermine just what this key regulatormight be capable of. In addition, whileleptin has been effective in patientswho lack the ability to synthesize it, thegreat majority of obese patients in facthave vastly increased levels of leptin, perhaps indicating that they havebecome leptin-resistant. This, combined with other factors, greatlylowers the benefits of this hormone inobesity treatments, but Dr. Friedman’srecent research suggests that suchissues can be circumvented bycombining leptin treatment withhormones secreted from thegastrointestinal system. A combinedamylin/leptin treatment in particular isnow under scrunity as a potentialremedy for obesity. Following Dr. Friedman’s lecture, areception took place, giving Bilkentstudents, faculty members and otherattendees the opportunity to meet thiseminent scientist.

ream ArtIf there were a “BestCreative SubconsciousMind Award,” I’m prettysure I would be among thenominees. The subconscious is ofcourse a very extensive area, ofwhich only a small piece has yetbeen discovered. However, onedoesn’t need detailed knowledge ofscience to have some idea about it,thanks to the mediator we havebetween the subconscious and theconscious mind, also known asdreams. It is often risky to talk orwrite about dreams, mainly becausethere are so many interpretations ofthem by various people, most ofthese with no grounds. So, I’mpleased to say that instead of theinterpretation of dreams, I want tofocus on a different aspect: that is,“dream images as an art form.” Readers interested in art or morespecifically in painting are likely tohave started protesting now due tothe almost inevitable associationproposed by the term “dreamimages”: the surrealist painters, whoare well-known for their dreampaintings. The surrealist groupincludes painters like Salvador Dali,

who strive to reflect the dreams(subconscious images) they have intheir heads using oil on canvas, sometimes with the help of drugs toexpand their imaginations. Theresemblance between the already-existing dream paintings and mysuggestion of dream images is hardto ignore, especially considering thatthe prior were my starting point inthe first place. However, there is one aspect of adream image that makes it unique, not only when compared to paintingsthat have a similar focus but whencompared to other art forms as well.Dream images are not to be effectedby the perceptions of one’s sensoryorgans during their creation. Art isalmost always a combination of thehard work of mind and body. Forinstance, in painting, the eyes areresponsible for the perception of theouter world, the brain for coming upwith the composition and the handsfor painting that composition. Thesame three-step (or perhapssometimes more) process goes forother art disciplines as well. Dream images, on the other hand, are neither translated or modified bythe conscious mind – which oftenlacks the ability to make sense ofdreams – nor restricted by the talentof the dreamer in reflectingthemselves to the outer world. Thecore idea is to have an image inone’s mind while one is asleep –when the subconscious mind isawake – and to put that image, orsequence of images, on paper. Asimpossible as the suggestion may

seem when first read, recentdevelopments in science indicatethat important steps have been takentoward the creation of devices thatcan decipher dreams. Although theiraccuracy is less than ideal at themoment, the existence of suchmachines is quite promising. As for the reason why I think theproducts of the subconscious mindare worthy to be presented as an artform, I believe that oftentimes thesubconscious mind acts like apainter who has produced plenty offascinating works but can neverreach the right people, the ones whowill truly appreciate them. Somedreams, for example, have smalldetails from our lives, like something

we ate that day, or an idea thatpassed through our mind for onlytwo seconds. They form a verycreative composition in the dreambut leave the dreamer himself tostruggle, like a person trying tounderstand the painter’s aim orfeelings in painting the image that isstanding in front of his eyes. Therefore, although it may not bepossible very soon, I think thatmapping of the subconscious mindto another medium that can beperceived by the conscious mind willnot only result in works pleasing tothe eye, but will also help people tobetter understand themselves andhumankind in general. After all, isn’tthat what the arts are for?

oes anyone here likewinter better thansummer? Yes? No?Maybe?I realize that it’s pointless to askthis question. One season would loseits meaning without the other.Stagnation in this respect, as in anyother, would serve nothing but thequest for dynamism. Those of youwho have read “The Chronicles ofNarnia: The Lion, The Witch andthe Wardrobe” will know about howwinter can drag on and on until noone can stand it any more. Thisdoesn’t mean, however, that we can’thave a preference for it. And, despitethe obvious appeals of summer, I gotbored quickly, and was waiting for itto end and for school to start. Beingin school and experiencing itsvarious social and academic dramaskeeps me busy. I wanted to be busy;I looked forward to it. Which was why it was so

surprising that this past week wassuch a blow to my system. So muchso that even though classes aren’t asrigorous in add/drop week as they arethe rest of the semester, and eventhough there really haven’t been thatmany errands to run or models tobuild, I find that I can’t get out ofbed after a nice, long sleep. So this column is for anyone outthere who has had a problem gettingadjusted this week. But we’ll find thebalance between classes and the restof our lives; it will get easier, Ipromise. One thing that has had an impacton most of our lives this semester isthe change in the daily schedule ofclasses that creates a longer lunchbreak than in previous years. Exceptsomehow, I don’t feel the difference. It doesn’t seem to be longer; I can’tseem to be able to get more done.Maybe it’s because the canteen iscloser to my faculty now than theother end of Main Campus; ormaybe, it’s very easy to get used tobeing comfortable. Why is it that weseem to spread out to occupy anyspace we get, which makes us yearnfor more? Why is it that wheneveryou take your things to your old roomthey seem to have expanded sonothing fits anywhere anymore? I’d like to believe that a large part

of the answer is the irresistible urgeto turn over a new leaf and startanew. We’re insatiable: we alwaysstrive for more, for better, no matterhow much we can achieve. Fordifferent people, the type ofachievement is different. It can beabout classes, or your position instudent society, or how much timeyou spend with your friends orpursuing your favorite hobby. Itdoesn’t matter. In the beginning, everything seems possible. Towardthe middle, it gets a bit muddled;we can sometimes lose ourbearings. Sometimes, it seems bestto start over. We all have the hopethat we won’t get sidetracked thistime, that we’ll keep our focus anddo more. I think it’s beautiful, thishope. For some, it can turn intogreed. But most people want notonly to take more, but also tocontribute more, and I maintain thebelief that these people and thecollective hope they sustain is whatkeeps us all going. Our lives are designed to be madeup of many pages -- we turn to anew one at every corner, and everyfork on the road. We sometimeshave to start over, not on familiarground, but in new environments. Iremember when my friends and Ifinished elementary school; it had

taken so long to become the oldestkids in the schoolyard, and now wewere the youngest. Again. Still, Ididn’t want to go back; I wanted tokeep moving forward. I imagine it’s the same for manypeople. We may not go back to thepage that has been turned, but whatdetermines the quality of the bookis what we take with us into thefuture, into our new beginnings. What we do creates what is to come. What we sometimes forget is thatthis effect goes beyond us. Everyoneis the center of their own universe, but these universes don’t existseparately, not as much as theyclash, coexist and just generallycreate the paradox we call life. Ourfingerprints and footprints becomepart of the collective memory. Theeffort of beginning again is oftenexhausting, or confusing, but wekeep making it anyway. As H. G.Wells -- an awesome writer, by the way -- commented about a more “realistic” collegue of his: “He sets himself to pick the strawsout of the hair of life… but withoutthe straws, she is no longer the madewoman we love.” I wish you all many weeks of endlesslypicking straws, many goodmemories to keep, and a terrificsemester!

The ultimate aim of Karate-do lies not in victory nordefeat but in the perfection of thecharacter of its participant.” - GichinFunakoshi The Bilkent University ShotokanKarate Dojo offers the opportunity tostudy and receive training intraditional Japanese ShotokanKarate. The course aims to teachkarate in a safe and disciplinedenvironment focusing is on self-development, fitness and self-defense. The physical and mental benefitsof this art form have beenrecognized worldwide. Throughphysical training, a student learnsthat emotions control the physicalbody. Karate is the mastering of thebody, the mind and the emotions. Itcreates self-confidence in one’sability to stop an opponent with asingle finishing blow. Suchconfidence leads to stable emotions.Stable emotions eliminate negativeemotions, to the benefit of physicaland mental health. Traditional karate tournamentsmaintain the original techniques and

spirit of the ancient martial art ofkarate and judge the participantsbased on a balance of technique, control and ability to finish a real-lifeopponent with a single blow.Participants fight at full strength, stopping a potential blow or kickwithin centimeters of theiropponent. This combination ofpower and control takes years todevelop and perfect.NOTE: For detailed informationabout Bilkent’s Shotokan KarateDojo, you can visit Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/BilkentKarateInstructor:Dr. Ahmed Kamal Ali, 1st degreeBlack BeltInstructor, Department ofArchitecture290-2590 or 290-1993 (Sports Center)e-mail: [email protected]@bilkent.edu.trScheduleTime: Saturdays, 9:45 – 11:15 a.m.Place: Dormitories Sports HallFee: 50 TL
