From the Commander of the Council of Kadosh Brethren, This month I continue to communicate the degrees of the Council of Kadosh. The Council of Kadosh degrees are those degrees inclusive of the Nineteenth Degree, through the Thirtieth Degree. These degrees are philosophical and chivalric. This month, I will cover the Twenty-Fifth Degree, “Knight of the Brazen Serpent”. The Ill. Henry C. Clausen in his “Commentary” sug-gested that, “This degree is therefore philosophical and mor-al, teaching not only repentance, but also reformation. It is devoted also to an explanation of symbols of Masonry, espe-cially those connected with the ancient and universal legend of death and restoration of life. A deeper meaning is that the rule of darkness and evil is only temporary and light and good shall be eternal.” The Scottish Rite Mason will stress that it is God who gives us: good, freedom, love, reason, moral choice, and identity. Ill. Clausen explains that, if we have faith in those basic characteristics of God, if we reflect them in our lives, and if we think those thoughts and exclude from our consciousness the opposite, we have within us an infinite, unlimited source of power. The ideals set forth in our Scottish Rite Degrees must include those conveyed in this degree; they are stimulating and will cause serious self-reflection. The Ill. Albert Pike, 33º went to very great lengths to explain the astrological significance and symbolism and its relationship to the allegory we study in Masonry. (Continued on following page)

community service organization; it is not an association of men to make new Masons for the purpose of increasing its numbers; nor when used in the context of Albert Pike’s Morals and Dogma, dogmas implies teachings, it is not to routinely conduct rituals and perform amateur theatrics with-out taking the time to understand their deeper teachings. Rather, MASONRY IS A LEARNING INSTITUTION which challenges each Brother to embark upon that path not to be better than others, but to be better than himself.
“Morals and Dogma is a call to our senses. It re-cites the dilemmas of the past, and challenges us to im-prove ourselves and in so doing the world at large.”

(continued from previous page) In his several pages of explanation of the Twenty-fifth degree, he explains that many ancient religions and be-liefs were founded on the premise that as God was building a place for mankind in heaven, he must therefore approve of them holding the heavenly bodies of the universe as worthy of their worship. Because of the serpent’s lethality, it was apparently God’s will that Moses display a serpent, that if mankind looked upon the displayed serpent it’s bite would not be deadly. So a bronze replica of a serpent was placed on a pole that the initiate could look upon and be saved from its deadly bite. Like so much of his writing, this section of the book covering this degree is extremely deep and, for me, a very difficult read, but again Ill. Pike’s book contains an ex-treme amount of information into the history of some of our teachings. If you have a desire to explore Astrology, you should read this section as it is very complete and enlighten-ing. These are some of the lessons taught by the Twenty-Fifth Degree, “Knight of the Brazen Serpent”. The infor-mation was gained from and refers to Page 137-142 in the Ill. Clausen’s, 33º “COMMENTARIES” and to pages 435-523 in the Ill. Pike’s, 33º “MORALS AND DOGMA”. As greater insight and understanding of the intent and objectives of Scottish Rite Masonry is needed, I suggest that each re-view these teachings from time to time and refresh our dedi-cation to the principles of our order. ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK ON AUGUST 6TH AT THE SCOTTISH RITE DINNER AUCTION!!!
My last reminder Brothers...make your reservations, donations, desserts and let's get ready to PARTY! We still need silent and live auction donations NOW. We need to make this Dinner Auction the best fundraiser ever. We took a dip with our Fishing Derby and can certainly make up some of our loss with your attendance and donations.

Saul Aguirre to Fresno Scottish Rite Do you want to participate in the next Tough Mudder in
SoCal this coming October? And be part of this great experience, let me know if you are interested.
The Scottish Rite Tough Mudder Program helps teach men about personal development, team development, and leader-ship development in a real world scenario. This is why there is a spot for everyone on the Team, whether they be Support Staff or a Participant!
"Every man in the Lodge is equally concerned in the building of the Temple, and each has his work to do. Because the task demands different gifts and powers, all are equally necessary to the work, the architect who draws the plans, the Apprentice who carries stones or shapes them with chisel and gavel; the Fel-lowcraft who polishes and deposits them in the wall, and the offic-ers who marshal the workman, guide their labor, and pay their wages. Everyone is equal to every other so long as he does good work, true work, square work. None but is necessary to the erec-tion of the edifice; none but receives the honor of the Craft; and all together know the joy of seeing the Temple slowly rising in the midst of their labors. Thus Masonry lifts men to a high level, mak-ing each a fellow-worker in a great enterprise, and if it is the best brotherhood it is because it is a brotherhood of the best" (MSANA, Short Talk Bulletin on the Level and Plumb, 1924).
MORALS and TEACHINGS Master Craftsman correspondence courses consist of
three segments. The first of the Master Craftsman courses address the three degrees in the Blue Lodge. The second pertains to Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freema-sonry – 4th through 32nd degrees. And the third Master Craftsman, “Morals and Dogma Annotated Edition” written by Arturo De Hoyos, focuses on philosophy. This book consists of 1,057 pages. Its purpose is to help the reader un-derstand Albert Pike’s 861 pages of Morals and Dogma, first published in 1872.
Morals and Dogma was written 144 years ago during a period some would consider primitive and backward. So then what is the value of Morals and Dogma for modern day Scottish Rite Masons?
I found the best answer to this question is given by the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Grand Archivist and Grand Historian Arturo De Hoyos, 33°:
“He (Albert Pike) sought to teach principles of enduring value, and he saw in the beliefs and practices of ancient cultures, as he understood them, real and im-portant instruction on morality and wise philosophy. His emphasis was, as ours should be, on the relationships de-veloped between man and God, and men and men.”
During my journey towards discovering answers to the mysteries of Freemasonry I came to the realization that when it comes right down to it, what makes us so unique and different from other associations, is that first and foremost Freemasonry is not intended to become primarily a
