PROJECT ENGINEERSSchaeffers
CHALLENGE
Existing 1350 mm diameter CSP culvert under
Bathurst Street had deteriorated under 6
lanes of roadway. This culvert went from an
existing maintenance hole to the ditch at
Bathurst Street and Teston Road. The ditch
at the outlet end was going to be filled as
part of the reconstruction of Teston Road
and a new catch basin added to connect the
outlet of the pipe to be direct buried.
SOLUTION
Line the CSP with 1016mm diameter HDPE
Weholite Pipe and extend the liner an
additional 20m to be direct buried and
connect to the new catch basin.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The access to this culvert was restricted on the
east end as access was through the
maintenance hole in the shoulder. The project
was a success and was completed in less than
one week. Terrafix Geosynthetics Inc. provided
drawings and burial calculations to the engineer in
charge and worked closely with the owner and
contractor to ensure that the project went well.

Weholite Pipe meets the design criteria for direct bury
pipe and can be used for storm and sanitary sewer
applications as well as sliplining applications. For
sanitary sewer applications we can offer a leak-free
system which will save you money by lowering
treatment costs as well as lowering maintenance and
repair costs. Leak-free systems are achieved by heat
extrusion welding the joints of the Weholite HDPE Pipe.
Currently, Weholite Pipe is being used in low pressure
applications at the Lou Romano Wastewater Treatment
Plant in Windsor Ontario.

The contractor works on aligning the next section of pipe to be threaded.
The crew works on threading a section of pipe. The existing CSP had ovalized and the liner was atight fit at the midway point.
The liner portion has been fully installed, now itis time to add the portion to be direct buried.
This portion of pipe was direct buried in the ditchand was connected to the new MH.
Preparing the threaded ends with grease for easy threading.
The pipe is ready for the bulkhead to be placed tocontain the grout in the annular void.
Portion of pipe that is direct buried in the ditchat the south side of Teston Rd.
