The key operations
Mental arithmetic
It is common f or a test to include a section on mental arithmetic. You are required to work the sums in y our head without a calculator or doing any
working out on paper. These are easy marks f or the well-practised candidate. Sharpening y our skills is boring, painf ul ev en, but ev ery one can do it. It is
simply a matter of practice. Be sure that y ou attend f or a test conf ident, f ast and accurate in these essential operations. Ev en if the test y ou f ace
allows y ou to use a calculator, y ou should still attend being able to do these calculations in y our head. You will sav e time if y ou do.
Below are 100 practice questions f or y our command of multiplication. I hav e not prov ided practice f or addition and subtraction as y ou can dev ise y our
own questions f or these key operations if necessary (y ou might change the sign of the f ollowing sums to make them, f or example, addition instead of
multiplication). Ev en if the test that y ou f ace does not include questions of this sty le, they are essential skills – and skills that y ou must command if
y ou are to triumph in any numeracy test.
Work out the f ollowing in y our head as quickly as possible. Do not stop practising until y ou are really quick and accurate. Answers are prov ided on page
244. Explanations are not prov ided f or the f irst 64 questions.
