The Composer Carold Nunez. a native of Texas. received his Bachelor of Music Composition and Master of Music Education degrees from North Texas State University. After 29 years in the Texas Public Schools. Mr. Nunez retired as Director of the Denton High School Orchestra and Coordinator of Orchestras in the Denton Independent School District. In 1989. Mr. Nunez was presented with the Texas Orchestra Director of the Year Award.

In addition to being active in the Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Orchestra Directors Association, he has also been a member of the American String Teachers Association and Music Educators National Conference. Presently, Mr. Nunez resides in Denton, Texas where he is a professional composer and pianist. and continues his close association with music education as a· clinician and adjudicator.

Other compositions by Carold Nunez, published by the Neil A Kjos Music Company, include the following string orchestra works: ''Apache," "Chapter One," "Convergence," "Introspection," "Suite for Strings" and "festival." a mass-string orchestra piece. Mr. Nunez is also the author of "Uni-Tunes,'' an elementary level sup-plementary method designed to reinforce note recognition and reading skills.

The Composition Approach the performance of Little Symphony as if it were a piece of music from the Classical period. There is a strong emphasis on bowing technique throughout the piece. Play the eighth notes marked with staccato dots using a light brush stroke. slightly off the string. The measures marked legato must be bowed smoothly. String crossings are also very important. Execute all crossings in a legato manner. Play the suc· cessive down bows in measures 48 and 51 with a firm and broad stroke. Students should quickly retrieve the bow after the quarter note to play the half note that follows precisely on the third beat.

It is imperative that all finger patterns be precise. Many passages require students to hold fingers down in measures where notes are played and later repeated. Pay particular attention to intonation in measures 27 and 29 where violists play C# on the G-string. This is generally a challenging note for beginning violists. Also. there are two measures where students play low first finger. In measure 48. cellists must play low first finger D# and in measure 53 violists and cellists must play low first finger D#. During rehearsal. isolate any finger pattern or bowing pattern that is difficult for students.
