Pearl grass (Hedyotis corymbosa L Lamk)

• People use for their health to treat digestion

disorder, cancer, appendix sore, microbial

infection (bacteria, protozoa and fungi)

• Contains hentriacontan, stigmasterol, ursolic

acid, oleonic acid, ß-sitosterol, sitisterol, D-

glukosida, p-cumaric acid, flavonoid, tannin and

kumarin (Djauhariya and Hernani, 2004), 5

compounds of iridoit included Asperulosid

(Sudarsono, 1999), certain compound for

prevent tumor development (Hsu, 1998).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

• Experiment has been started since 2006

• Laboratory experiment to determine the

active compounds and antimicrobial

activities

• Feeding trial to determine the effect on

broiler chicken where their litter was

sprayed by E. coli

Laboratory experiment

• Activities :

- extraction, isolation, fractionation and

purification, characteristic of the structure and

antimicrobial (bacteria and fungi) activity test.

• Methods

- Chromatographic method

- Spectroscopic Method : IR, 1H and 13C NMR.

- Disk Diffusion Method : Antimicrobial activity test

Feeding Trial

• 100 Chickens fed

R0 : Basal diet + 0 g pearl grass extract, R1 :

Basal diet + 0.8 g pearl grass extract per kg diet,

R2 : Basal diet + 1.6 g pearl grass extract per kg

Feeding Trial

• Basal diet : starter diet (until 3 weeks of

age) and finisher diet (after 3 weeks of

age)

• After 3 weeks of age, litter was sprayed

with Escherichia coli as much as 106

CFU/100 ml of liquid agar. Then, chickens

were kept until 6 weeks of age.

• Parameters measured were feed

consumption and live weight.

RESULTS

• Active Compounds

- 4-metil-2-en-heksanol (group of alcohol),

tersier butyl isopropyl keton (group of

keton), and stigmasta-5,22-dien-3-ol

(group of steroid).

- group of alcohol was significant, group of

keton was highly significant and group of

steroid was not significant antibacterial

activity against Escherichia coli
