Fifth Sunday of Easter MAY 10, 2020 Acts 6:1-7; 1 Peter 2:4-9; John 14:1-12 The first reading tells of the ordination of the first deacons of the Church. Their primary function is to minister the charity of the Church. The reading tells us that the number of disciples at Jerusalem enormous- ly increased. The Church is growing. In its growth, the Church will need to cope with problems of administration, with answering many questions, and with a deepening awareness of its mission here on earth. Very likely, the first Christians did not think that the Church would be around very long; they probably thought that Jesus was going to return in glory very soon. Gradually, however, they saw that the Church was intended to be here for the long term. They may have had some fears about this. But as they reflected, they surely recalled that Jesus had sent the Holy Spirit to empower them to be his witnesses. He had gone to prepare a place for them, but he was still with them. He is the way, the truth, and the life. And the Holy Spirit manifests Christ to them. In the Gospel, Jesus tells them that they have put faith in him and in the works he has done. But because he returns to the Father and sends them the Spirit, they will do even greater things than he has done! In the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church must continue the mission of Christ until he comes again. The second reading recalls Psalm 118: Jesus is the stone rejected by the builders who has become the cornerstone, the capstone, of the structure. But it is more than stone: We are living stones being built into God’s temple. We need to realize our dignity as the “new Israel.” In Exodus 19:6, God told Israel that it was a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. The author of 1 Peter goes even further: “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a con- secrated nation, a people God claims for his very own.” If we are awed and frightened by our mission on earth, let us realize that the Lord is still with us. He has empowered us to be his faithful witnesses through the Holy Spirit. Let us be his instruments in the sal- vation of the world. --Msgr. SSisisterer Pararisish h Newews Father Michel sends his blessings to the parishioners of St. Peter Church. He says his people are doing well. So far, none have contracted the coronavirus. He asks that we continue to pray for one another in this difficult time, to keep going and be safe! The Sister Parish Twinning Program in Nashville recently notified us that there will be no spring shipment to Haiti because of the coronavirus situation. However, they hope to schedule another shipment in late summer or early fall. They will notify us if and when that happens. In the meantime, we want to thank again everyone for the generous outpouring of donations we received to send to Our Lady of the Assumption Church. We filled several barrels in February, and will finish the remaining ones after the current “stay at home” restrictions are lifted, and we learn more from Nashville.

Anotnotheher Prayer FoFor The he CurCurrent ent Virirusus Sitituatuationion Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

AAll ll MasMasses es Until further notice, there are no public Masses. During this time, the Catholic faithful are dispensed from their Sunday obli-gation and are encouraged to pray with the Scripture readings of the Mass and watch the Mass on our parish's Youtube chan-nel. In place of reception of the Blessed Sacrament, the faithful are encouraged to make a spiritual communion, to pray the rosary, and to pray for the end to the pandemic, the healing of those afflicted, and strength for those caring for the sick. The church remains open from 8am-6pm every day for personal prayer. Additionally, we will continue to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30pm.

Parish in Action

Fr. Leo’s column continued…. Once again, I want to state how much I miss all of you at our celebrations of the Eucharist. I am look-ing for the governor to hopefully increase from 10 peo-ple to 50 that could be in attendance at Mass. If that is the case, then we will have to figure out how we can do that, maintaining the number as well as the social dis-tancing. We might have to have a lottery or some type of process by which we can expand our attendance so that everyone has a chance to celebrate at least once a month. Not sure how that will take place but bear with me as we try to do our best in this situation that is not the best for any of us. Again, I thank you for continuing to support the parish through your weekly donations. We check our mailbox quite often during the day and I personally thank you for your generosity. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: A man called his mother in Florida, “Mom, how are you?” “Not too good,” said the mother. “I’ve been very weak.” The son said, “why are you so weak?” She said, “because I haven’t eaten in 38 days.” The man said, “that’s terrible. Why haven’t you eaten in 38 days?” The mother answers, “Because I didn’t want my mouth to be filled with food if you should call.” (If your mother lives away, or even in town, please make it a point to call her.)

Fr. Leo’s column continued…. Once again, I want to state how much I miss all of you at our celebrations of the Eucharist.

Fifth Sunday

of Easter

MAY 10, 2020 Acts 6:1-7; 1 Peter 2:4-9;

John 14:1-12 The first reading tells of the ordination of the first deacons of the Church. Their primary function is to minister the charity of the Church. The reading tells us that the number of disciples at Jerusalem enormous-ly increased. The author of 1 Peter goes even further: “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a con-secrated nation, a people God claims for his very own.” If we are awed and frightened by our mission on earth, let us realize that the Lord is still with us. He has empowered us to be his faithful witnesses through the Holy Spirit. Let us be his instruments in the sal-vation of the world.
