Just Say No…..

My children are going through "Say

No to Drugs" week at school. Every

day is a new theme. Yesterday was

"turn your back on drugs," and each

child was encouraged to wear their

shirt backwards. Today was pajama

day because they are to "put drugs to

sleep." Tomorrow is dress like a

friend day so they remember to "stop a

friend from doing drugs." Each day,

they are a visible expression in what

they are wearing to just say no. It's a

brilliant way for kids to remember this

vital message and take ownership.

As I listen to our Scripture reading for

All Saints Sunday this week from

Revelation 21:1-6, a beautiful image is

painted for us of a new heaven and a

new earth. It is a Scripture that has

brought hope and comfort knowing

there is a God who comes to redeem

all creation. But interestingly enough,

instead of describing what this new

heaven and new earth looks like, the

is not present. "Death will be no

more; mourning and crying and

pain will be no more, for the first

are what makes all things new. It's

an interesting concept to consider -

what is not, allows what is. Saying

no to one thing, allows another to

wants the world to look.

When I consider our God given

This Week in Sunday School

yes. We say yes to heartbreak when

we don't reach out in love to a lonely

widow. We say yes to suffering

when we don't visit the sick or those

in prison. We say yes to injustice

when we don't give to the poor or

make sacrifices to benefit another.

We say yes to oppression when we

don't say anything to a racist com-

ment or sexist joke.

So maybe this week, we focus on the

things we must say no to: the com-

forts we must give up, or the fears

we must abandon or the emotional

baggage we need to leave behind, in

order to be made the new creation

that Christ allows us to be. I believe

when we wear this message, we too

will be a visible expression for all

the world. Our actions will be what

we wear that proclaims Jesus' good

news. And who knows, maybe oth-

ers will see how we look and want to

say no too.

Be a blessing,

Across the country, the people of The United Methodist Church are serving the people

God loves in Jesus’ name. We’re doing it at home, but so often we’d like to do more.

• We want to serve those in other places who are suffering.

• We want to offer spiritual words of hope and life.

• And we want to be well-equipped to do both!

But the reality for most of us is that our responsibilities – home, family, work – don’t allow

us to engage with every need we’d like to meet. Right now there are UMC young people –

who might not have had the resources to attend a school of their choice, or, for some, any

school at all – who’ve been sent by you into the world God loves because of your giving to

United Methodist Student Day. When you give generously you are supporting these stu-

dents as they prepare for a life that unites faith with knowledge.

What no one person or congregation can do alone, we’re doing together.

Nurturing Christian Leaders Like Ricky Blue

The son of two addicted parents, Ricky Blue had grown up without much hope for a fu-

ture. But when Ricky’s church family – Louisiana’s Luling UMC – raised $4000 for Ricky

to begin college, hope was born. Then, the Gift of Hope Scholarship, made possible only

by your generous giving to United Methodist Student Day, allowed Ricky to continue. To-

day Ricky is a certified candidate for ministry in the Illinois-Great Rivers Annual Confer-

ence.

What no one person can do, we're doing together.

Together We’re Raising Up Gifted Christian Leaders

When you support United Methodist Student Day, you make it possible for more students

like Ricky to serve the world God loves. So although you can’t meet every need you’d like

to, your giving allows members of Christ’s body, people like Ricky, to do it in Jesus’ name.

Will you give to United Methodist Student Day as our November communion offering?

Generosity Update

Generosity Commitments Update!

Thank you everyone who has made a commitment to the spiritual discipline of giving

with a 2016 giving commitment card. As of Monday, we’ve received $356,626 in 98

commitments. Thank you for these commitments!

So that we may fund the ministries planned in 2016, we need another $151,605 in

commitments. But, 53 members who made commitments in 2015 have not yet

turned in a card or contacted our Treasurer, Patti R. Martin to continue their gifts into

2016. Or, this may be the time that you step out in faith to make a commitment in

2016 to the spiritual discipline of giving.

If you have not done so, please return a commitment card in the offering plate,

mailed to the church office, or email Patti at [email protected] so that we can better

plan which ministries and community service we can fund in 2016. Commitment

cards are available at the church entrances and at the sanctuary doors this Sunday.

agreed to begin engaging you and our community in

community and help us set goals for the next 3 to 5 years.

Holy Conversations, a 6 month strategic planning process is underway. You can participate

by connecting with one of our representatives in the Sunday school classes or small groups

they represent or by visiting our online blog page at http://www.whumc.com/holy-

conversations on our website. Please check our newsletter for a monthly update this week on

the results of this month’s conversation from our collaboration of your comments on October

13 about our Biblical narrative. This month our question is “What is the dream God has for

this neighborhood?” We look forward to hearing from you!

Page 11: Nurturing Community Loving God and Serving Neighbor · Loving God and Serving Neighbor November 1, 2015 Just Say No….. My children are going through "Say No to Drugs" week at school

The Holy Conversation group met for the second time on October 13,

2015. Our assignment was to share the bible story the church was currently in.

This was a very spiritual and heart felt conversation. Some of the scripture not-

ed were: -Acts 13 Paul and Barnabas preaching that was not well received so they “shook the dust off

their feet and went on”

-the Good Samaritans story in Luke 10 the church is always their for us

- Joshua taking over the leadership role from Moses (a new day a new leader)

-figure of Abraham as hearing a call to a new place

-Matthew 6 the Sermon on the Mount

-Numbers 13 sense of assurance that the Israelites ought to enter the Promised Land

-David and Goliath-a large battle trying to bring everyone into the fold

-story of Nehemiah noting that the temple was rebuilt but not identical to the former temple

Colossians 3 (vv 12-17) speaks to the power of community

-Romans 12:3-8 noting the emphasis on everyone receiving a unique gift

-Jonah and the whale where Jonah was spit up on the beach

-The Letter of Paul because they contain so much encouragement amidst conflict and difficul-

ty

-The Widows Mite because the story speaks to putting in our all without expecting anything in

return

-Joshua at the Jordan verse 4 noting the foundational role of those at WH who have led the

way, continue to build on this foundation.

-Luke 19 the song refers to Zacchaeus as a “wee little man” we sometimes minimize our role

by thinking of ourselves as a “wee little church”.

Similarities in these stories noticed by the team -several of the stories indicate being at a crossroad

-several are about confronting change

-perseverance is a theme in several

-anxiety is expressed in more than one of the stories

-we find the theme of 'believing in each other'

-some of the stories didn't have a conclusion, or were unfinished

-some spoke of small numbers of people doing great things

-there is an underlying sense of hope in several of then

-they are non-conventionalist (i.e. there's someone who is a leader who we

wouldn't normally expect to be a leader, etc.)

The team welcomes your input and discussion before our next meeting on No-

vember 17th. Our assignment is to talk about what constitutes WH's 'mission

field' (i.e. the people to whom God is sending us)

-What breaks God's heart in our mission field?

-OR, What is the world God imagines in our mission field?

-OR, What is the nightmare in our mission field for which God is supplying a

dream?
