1. Background

1.1 The house system originated in England. It is a traditional feature of schools in the English-

speaking world. In modern times, the word ‘house’ may refer to a grouping of pupils

rather than to a particular building. The students of a school are divided into subunits

called ‘Houses’ and each student is allocated to one of these houses upon enrolment.

1.2 The purpose of house system is to promote peer mentoring. It is believed the peer-

mentoring model will allow students to feel freer to express their ideas, ask questions in

a more understandable and relevant way. It will also encourage a community spirit, and

cultivate a great sense of belonging within their houses.

1.3 The literatures on mentoring in the academic setting speaks of the changing needs of

students over the academic life cycle to which a reflexive support programme must be

tailored in order it addresses those needs and provide a safety net through which no

student will fall. This guide aims to offer insight into some of the main issues students

encounter as they navigate their own path along their academic journey.

1.4 NUS Nursing is highly committed not only to the academic progress of the students but

also in providing ongoing support and giving them the most nurturing physical and

emotional environment possible. The concept of houses is to facilitate the personal

development of students and to support their academic progress.

1.5 NUS Nursing values this approach to support students in their transition towards

becoming competent and professional nurses. To ensure that the houses programme

meets the needs of today’s nursing students in National University of Singapore (NUS),

this programme marries the best of the traditional approach with contemporary cultural

and contextual considerations.
