Great to be here saved one of the best and my favorite cities to wrap up our tourGrew up in Boston have really come to love NYCNow I know we are a little competitive in sports, so I had to look at the registration for both cities. 226 Boston213 NYC. However, you beat us on attendance. So hats off to you! Thank you for ending our US tour on such a high note!

Were at an amazing point in time for IT.Can you feel it? There is a tectonic shift happening in data center infrastructure. Where new solutions are breaking down the complexity and pain of legacy systems. We see these major shifts over timethe move from mainframes to PCs, the move from cell phones to smart phones, from silod telephony and networking to unified communicationsand now from aging storage and compute servers to hyperconverged systems.Buckle up its going to be fun! But thats why were in IT, right? The opportunity to innovate and find better solutions.9

Gartner Magic Quadrant for Integrated Systems 2015

StrengthsNutanix is a complete infrastructure solutions company, providing its customers flexibility in their choice of hypervisors and cloud usageNutanix has gained market credibility and established a worldwide presenceThe Acropolis scale-out architecture, along with the ability to scale compute and storage independently, enables users to grow Nutanix deployments incrementally to meet application needs

Gartner has also taken notice of us. And recently recognized us as the most visionary vendor in the integrated systems space. There were a few key reasons for that15

Making Complex SimpleMaking Simple Invisible

Speaking of vision, lets talk a little bit about what we mean by our vision of Invisible Infrastructure.

Its our guiding principle for everything we do.

We see this all around us in our consumer lives. Complexity being abstracted and removed so we can focus on more important issues.

Payment has become invisible. There was a time when people used currency stand in the line at the airport, change currency etc., worry about exchange rates. We then moved to credit cards where we didnt have to carry currency and just used cards and the banks will figure out exchange rates, conversion etc.

Now with things like Uber, Apple pay etc. payment has become invisible as well. There is no exchange of currency or credit cards, it happens between banks directly through phones/computers.16

Just WorksInvisible

What do we really mean by invisible . First it should just work. When you plug in your laptop charger to the wall, you dont care where the power comes from. You dont care about what grid you are part of, or whether it is from a hydro electric plant or a nuclear plant. It just works. You are always confident that when you plug he power chord in, your laptop charges.

Similarly, IT infrastructure should just work. It exists to support your applications and anytime you spend on making infrastructure work is time wasted.17

Invisible Removes Constraints

It removes constraints. Think of itunes. Your experience is the same irrespective of what device you use or where you use it. It enables you to buy, listen to music or watch movies wherever you want whenever you want it.That is how IT infrastructure should function. Irrespective of whether you want to run the workload in private cloud or public cloud, whether it is a dev-test workload or a mission critical production workload, IT infrastructure shouldnt enforce any artificial constraints for deploying applications. It should be an enabler.18

Invisible Eliminates Guesswork

The last and most important aspect of invisibility is guesswork.

Think of Google nest. It adjusts room automatically temperature based on your preference. If you are inside the house, it knows it and adjusts the temperature to what you are most comfortable with. Gone are the days when you go change the thermostat during different parts of day/year.

IT infrastructure today forces you to make predictions based on tribal knowledge or vendor recommendations. When you deploy Applications on Amazon or Azure, there is no guess work. But when you order infrastructure for the next 3 years, there is ton of guesswork. There is guesswork in terms of what performance you can extract from a piece of hardware.

19

The Best IT Infrastructure IsInfrastructureYou Cant See

And for these reasons, we believe the best IT infra is infra you cant see.

The most transformative technologies are often the ones we dont even think about.

They enrich our lives, but we rarely think about them. They are invisible.

20

Legacy Infrastructure Is Not Invisible

1.Inherent Complexity2. Inefficient Silos3. Forklift Scaling

Now if we contrast this with legacy infrastructurewe quickly get that its anything but invisible.

But legacy three-tier infrastructure, comprised of compute, storage network and storage, is anything but invisible. There are inherent complexities all the way from ordering, deploying and managing the infrastructure. You have to budget for 3-5 years in advance and predict what your needs are. As most IT teams know, this is almost impossible.

It creates separate silos within the datacenter that are often detrimental to change and progress. Every new business initiative requires buy offs from different teams within the datacenter.

When it is time for upgrade, they are expensive and complex often resulting in several days of downtime. While this was acceptable a decade ago, business can no longer withstand such inefficiencies. We are living in a world where 3 seconds of a video buffering on a mobile phone is no longer acceptable.21

Hyperconvergence Solves the Data ProblemConverging compute, storage and virtualization

ServerNetworkShared Storage(SAN/NAS)

Key Points:Native convergence (or hyper-convergence) is critical in the modern datacenterTraditional three-tier architecture has scale-out compute (with virtualization) connected to scale-up storageThe storage network adds latency and becomes a bottleneck, especially as flash storage becomes more prevalent in all storage systemsData has to be retrieved from storage every time some operation needs to be done in the server. This north-south traffic kills performance because it does not respect data gravityDeploying and scaling out storage is complex and error-proneStorage is managed in terms of LUNs and RAID sets, while hypervisors talk about vdisks different granularityAdmins have to set up port bonding, multipathing, I/O mapping etc. to deploy the networkNutanix eliminates the complexity and bottleneck of the storage network and delivers a converged solution for virtual environments that can be scale out on demand22

Purpose of the Slide: Talk about where and how web-scale IT originated, and what some of the common are between different web-scale data centers. Web-scale data centers embody many of the principals of invisible infrastructure, and serve as the inspiration for Nutanix enterprise computing solutions.

Main Points:Web companies like Google and Facebook started pushing the limits of existing infrastructure systems and processes in ways that traditional businesses did not. They needed infrastructure that could support their business requirements (rapid application development cycles, scale on demand, cost containment). They tried using existing infrastructure solutions, but quickly realized that legacy infra was a poor fit for their needs.

Over time, these companies developed an alternate approach to IT that enabled them to get past limitations in infrastructure. Some common traits of web-scale IT:

Infrastructure built from commodity server hardware pooled together using intelligent software. This allows customers to start small and scale one server at a time true scale-outThe software in the system is distributed across all the nodes. You dont have central metadata servers or name nodes. You dont see controller bottlenecksEmbarrassingly parallel operations everything in the system, including storage functions like deduplication and metadata management and system cleanup, is distributed across all nodes. There are no hotspots or bottlenecks, allowing for massive scaleCompute and storage sit very close to each other. Data does not have to go back and forth between storage and compute over a network. Data has gravity, so co-locating storage and compute eliminates network bottlenecks and system slowdownHeavy automation eliminates the need for expensive, error-prone manual operations23

The Journey To Invisible Infrastructure

Nutanix has succeeded in making enterprise storage an invisible resource. The company has now set its sights on bringing simplification to the rest of the infrastructure stack, including virtualization and virtualization management.

To fulfill this vision, Nutanix has introduced two new product families: Nutanix Acropolis, and Nutanix Prism. Together, the full solution is the Xtreme Computing Platform, or XCP.

The longer-term vision is to bring invisible cloud-based infrastructure to enterprise datacenters, providing a viable and more economic alternative to public cloud services. 24

Before we talk about Hyperconvergence what it actually brings to your datacenter, it is worth spending time understanding how datacenter infrastructure has evolved over the last couple of decades.

This was the most common deployment model a couple of decades back. Virtualization did not exist. Applications were running on physical servers with DAS spinning disks. If you needed better performance or if the application was large with a lot of data, you bought BAS (Big A$$ Servers). All the obvious pain points existed around predicting application growth, data growth, over provisioning etc.

To help things along, shared storage came into existence SAN and NAS solutions. They typically had disk shelves and a couple of storage controllers, that exposed the storage through diff protocols to the servers. Had obvious benefits around having shared storage but lead to a couple of problems:

Planning/budgeting and increased costStorage controllers became the bottleneck 31

Flash came along and it helped with performance. But as servers became more dense and # of VMs on server started growing, the bottleneck shifted from disks to the storage controllers. Whether it was flash based storage or spinning disks, the storage controller started being the bottleneck. Every data read/write goes from the VM to the host, down through the network to the storage controller to the disks. Every hop along the way adds latency. 32

Hyperconvergence solves this issue and a lot more. We still have servers with direct attached storage. But what we do is pool storage from all the servers in a cluster into a shared storage pool so that storage from all the independent nodes are available to all the nodes in the cluster and the associated VMs.

You can start off with as little as 3 nodes in a cluster and incrementally grow from there. When you need additional capacity you just add a node either compute heavy, storage heavy depending on what you need.

All the enterprise storage capabilities that shared storage solutions such as NetApp and EMC provided, Nutanix provides it.

Now addressing the bottleneck/hotspot problem in shared storage the storage controller is virtualized and is present on every node in the system. When you can virtualize mission critical workloads such as Oracle and SQL, why not virtualize storage as well. To us storage is an App as well and should be the first App that should be virtualized.

Everytime a node is added a CVM gets added. All the requests from the user VM will be handled by the CVM that sits on the same node. So requests dont typically have to go through the network. 33

Purpose of the slide:

3 tier stack is complex. Focus should be on Applications, but before we get to the Application layer, we need to build the physical infrastructure which is complex involving several vendors. Nutanix simplifies datacenter infrastructure by integrating multiple components within the datacenter all the way up to the virtualization layer.

Main Points:

1. Legacy infrastructure has complexity written all over it. Multiple layers that needs to be assembled and made to work2. First you need networking most enterprises have 10Gb ToR switches from companies Cisco/Arista3. You then need servers from vendors like HP/Dell/Cisco4. You then buy expensive storage from NetApp, EMC 5.You then have specialized HBAs that sit on the server to improve performance6. You then have dedicated Fibre channel connection and switches to connect the servers to storage7. You then get to the virtualization layer where you have hypervisors and virtualization management layers from Vmware, Msft and Redhat.8. While the focus should be on the Application, you have to go through all these layers before you start focusing on Applications.

With Nutanix you still use the 10 Gb ToR switches you have to interlink Nutanix nodes and for external communitcationBut all complexity above is taken away with a single Nutanix appliance that can scale to as many nodes as you wantIn addition to using ESXi and Hyper-V customers also have a choice of going with the built in Acropolis Hypervisor giving them ultimate flexibility. This simplified infrastructure deployment significantly and helps businesses bring products to market a lot quickly than what is possible now.

Key points:

This slide talks about our competitive differentiation vs other hyperconverged players out there. No compromise on enterprise storage capabilities: Just because a customer is buying hyperconverged, they dont have to sacrifice enterprise storage capabilities that they have come to expectHyperconverged systems, are by design distributed systems. They have to be designed with web-scale principles without single points of failure or bottlenecks.38

Key Points:

We are not stopping. We are building more capabilities across the stack in bringing more storage capabilities to our customers.

Talking Points:In addition to everything we have covered earlier, we are continuing to invest in making sure Nutanix is the best storage platform for all your virtualized workloads.First, instead of just supporting multiple cookie-cutter configuration, we are also supporting configure to order HW models. This way you can choose the configuration that best fits your workloads by configuring the amount of memory, CPU, storage depending on what your applications need.We also have the Nutanix sizer tool that will help you accurately predict what kind of hardware you need to run your workloads. Instead of having complex excel spreadsheets, you can use the sizer tool to deterministically find out what hardware you need.We have also introduced a storage only hardware platform 6035-C. This helps customers add only storage to their nutanix cluster instead of adding compute and storage if they wish for it. As many of you may be aware, Microsoft will not officially support Exchange deployments on NFS. We are now introducing support for in-guest support for iSCSI to add Nutanix vDisks into Windows guests by using the native Microsoft iSCSI software initiator adapter. We also will support the ability to pin VMs to flash tier so that data is not migrated out of the flash tier based on usage patterns. For example, you can pin an Oracle VM to the flash tier so that all of the VM always sits on the flash tier ensuring high performance and low latency for the entire VM.Lastly, we have also introduced Erasure coding. As a reminder, we already support Dedup and Compression. But these capacity optimization techniques are workload dependent and the actual savings depend on the kind of data. EC-X, our patent pending implementation of Erasure coding can help increase total usable capacity by up to 75%.

Erasure Coding

NEWOLD

Lets frame the discussion around storage efficiency by discussing old school RAID:RAID is an old school method for many reasons (as given on the slides)However, the main reason why RAID hasnt stood the test of time is that disks have become ever denser but their throughput has remained constant, so rebuilds after failures can take an inordinately long period of timeErasure coding on the other hand is NOT tightly coupled to disk and instead works across nodes and can leverage the power of all the nodes in the cluster

40

Replication Factor makes 2 copies of data. Once data gets cold, Erasure coding comes in and replaces data copies with Parity. Notice that 4 data blocks (a,b,c,d) are now thinned down to a single data block (P)In this example, an overhead of 100% (RF) has been reduced to 25% with Erasure coding41

One of the other use cases we are enabling is filer service with Nutanix. You can now build a scale out file server using Nutanix. This will essentially be a Nutanix VM that sits within the same cluster or a separate cluster serving files to users. Great example is VDI user data. Instead of having a separate NetApp for filer service, you can now integrate it with your existing Nutanix deployment and serve files easily.

You can add nodes when you need additional capacity. This capability will be available Q4 CY 2016.

Key Points:Natively built virtualization solution and ability for Apps to move across hypervisors depending on business needs.

Talking points:

The last piece of Acropolis is the App Mobility Fabric. As mentioned before Nutanix natively ships a KVM based hypervisor and VM management solution. This includes most of the virtualization capabilities that enterprises need today. In addition to that with the App mobility fabric, Admins can seamlessly move their Apps across different hypervisors. This enables them to host their production environment on Vmware ESXi and their Dev test in Acropolis Hypervisor and seamlessly move from Dev/Test to Prod. For a lot of customers, this significantly saves on their Vmware ELAs.In the long run, AMF will also support the ability to move Apps to public cloud or to a container based technology.

Virtualized Computing

- Virtualization solutions today do a lot some of it (like providing resource virtualization for running VMs on a host) are core to what hypervisors have to do. - But others like provisioning, snapshots, cloning, etc. are really data services that the virtualization layer took on because at the time they were designed storage was LUN or file-centric and didnt understand VMs. As a result, the hypervisor got a LUN or file mount from the underlying storage system and took care of creating and managing files to represent vDisks, snapshots, clones, etc. Each hypervisor platform implemented these data services differently, using different file formats to represent VMs. As a result, mobility across hypervisors became incredibly cumbersome and complexAs clouds become more widespread among enterprise environments, mobility is also restricted between private virtualized environments and public clouds48

The demo walks through AMF a capability that will be available very soon. Helps you unlock the application from the underlying environment. You have multiple hosts here with different hypervisors ESXi, Hyper-V and Acropolis Hypervisor.

What you can essentially do now is choose a single node and convert the node from one hypervisor to another. This node for example has ESXi. With a single click you can convert to AHV. We will automatically move the VMs, clean up the host, refoundation the system with new hypervisor, convert the VMs, inject the right drivers and metadata and restart the system. This process will typically take a few minutes to complete. But you get the point.

In the long run we will support more hypervisors and support back n forth operations as well.52

AWS Migration:

Just like the previous example, you can also move VMs from private cloud to public cloud. This is a proof of concept for what AMF can enable. You can click a single VM or a bunch of VMs and move it to AWS easily.53

Why AHV: Top Mgmt. Mandate to remove VMware

Key Points:

They had a lot of hypervisors and hence complexity in their environment vSphere, Citrix XenServer, KVM, Hyper-VWanted to limit the number of platforms else it is hard to manage for a small team. They wanted to standardize on KVM either CentOS or some other flavor.

Richard B.They were on ESX 5.5Standard EditionThey only use basic vCenter features not even HA / DRS.Wanted to use open source software to save on licensing costs.

We sold to internal IT and not devops.Internal IT was getting hand me down hardware old with various different hypervisors. There is a top level mandate to get rid of VMware to reduce licensing costs.Production IT group (team that runs the SaaS service) may have the skills and resources needed to get KVM to work but internal IT was left wondering how to get rid of VMware.5) Nutanix AHV provides a solution to such IT teams.6) They hired a consultant to get ovirt to work for KVM along with gluster. That attempt failed miserably.

SaaS companies: See if internal IT wants to use KVM.

Want to use VMware only for appliances.

Like Nutanix:Due to ease of management.Decent support: Offload overhead in the team from senior people

Key Points:They were migrating all their workloads to AWS.However, they want to keep some financial apps within their DC.Were looking at legacy infrastructure for that. However all Nutanix value propositions are very relevant to this customer. Small scale of granularity, easy to manage, small footprint, pay as you grow,Cloud like etc. 4) We were able to position AHV as an alternative to VMware. One less vendor to deal with. One throat to choke for support etc.

Startups:That are mostly buying SaaS services or putting their apps on AWS may still need some small footprint in local data centers.

Startup:

Oportun leverages its unique technology platform to run automated risk scoring and achieve back-office productivity.

From SFDC:Oportun is a financial credit/loan firm focused on helping 25 Million individuals in the Hispanic community with 140 stores across 3 states. Their need is to refresh their aging HW running Windows/Linux for QA/Dev. Big wins for choosing Nutanix are ease of management and security.

Bradley is working as the IT infrastructure manager for Progress Financial; they are shifting many of their production workloads to the cloud and want to move away from their legacy VMware environment and move to Hyper-V or KVM. Hybrid cloud is a huge hot button for them. They want to be able to scale easily because of a large Linux app they have with dynamic requirements.

AcropolisAcropolis Hypervisor

Purpose of the slide:Introduce Nutanix Acropolis and talk about integrated storage fabric, virtualization and app mobility fabric. About Acropolis being the core data plane.

Talking Points:

Acropolis like mentioned before is the core data plane. It includes a distributed storage fabric which has all the enterprise grade capabilities that you need. Features like Dedup, compression, tiering, cloning, snapshots etc. are built in. Instead of providing this functionality through one or two storage controllers inside a storage array, the storage controller is virtualized and is present on every node in the nutanix cluster as a controller VM.In addition to that Acropolis also has a built in Virtualization platform. This is based on open source KVM, but thinned down and hardened to ensure it is enterprise ready. The third piece is the App mobility fabric that lets you seamlessly move applications from one hypervisor to another hypervisor or from on-premises data center to public cloud enabling apps to run where businesses want as opposed to the other way.60

Simplified Datacenter Management

Prism brings simplicity to infrastructure management, and features innovative One-Click technology that streamlines time-consuming IT tasks

One-Click Infrastructure Management - Nutanix Prism gives administrators an easy way to manage virtual environments running on Acropolis. It simplifies and streamlines common workflows for hypervisor and virtual machine (VM) management, from VM creation and migration to virtual network setup and hypervisor upgrades. Rather than replicating the full set of features found in other virtualization solutions, virtualization management in Prism has been designed for an uncluttered, consumer-grade experience.

One-click Operational Insight - Prism provides rich insights about day-to-day operations of the datacenter. Prism is powered by advanced machine learning technology with built-in heuristics and business intelligence to easily and quickly mine large volumes of system data and generate actionable insights for optimizing all aspects of infrastructure performance.

One-Click Remediation - Nutanix Prism reduces mean time to resolution significantly by proactively analyzing trends and predict when certain failures can occur. In addition to that Prism also provides customized recommendations to resolve issues with a single click. Instead of showing individual alerts, Prism intelligently maps alerts to specific services and shows the errors impact on applications, helping IT admins gain more confidence about how their applications are running.

63

Prism Instant Search

When you need information, you go to Google. It has simplified how people access information.

We are doing the same thing with Prism. Prism has a built in search engine now that supports free-text searching. Completely eliminates any learning curve you may have. You can search for create vm, clone vm, show alerts, services and it will intelligently display results based on your search criteria. It will also give you an easy way to perform the action with a single click.

This is how we are bringing consumer-grade simplicity to the datacenter management. No longer do you have to deal with old wizards and clunky UI. 64

DemoPrismSearch and Dashboards + End to End DC Operations

This is the new dashboard view in Prism. The dashboards are fully customizable that means you can create different views of your application and infrastructure. You can create dashboards for how your Oracle applications are running as well as how the underlying storage is performing. Gives you at a glance view of all the information you care about. Our developes, for fun, have created dashboards with happy monkeys to indicate that everything is humming along fine.

What you see now is the Google like search bar I mentioned earlier. Even though Prism is extremely intuitive and easy to use, you can now search and perform actions with a single click from the search bar. You can search for applications installed, VMs deployed, you can create VMs/delete VMs. Like Google, Prism also knows what you search for frequently and based on that tries to guess what you actually meant.

The search spans across deployed VMs/applications, knowledgebase articles, alerts etc. and the results are all shown centrally. Lets say we search for Oracle now it shows the Oracle Application that is installed. The Oracle App has 3 VMs, we automatically correlate and combine alerts from all 3 VMs so that you see an application centric view as opposed to having to figure out the individual VMs that constitute the application and trying to figure out how they work in conjunction.

For example, you see a spike in the I/O latency here, you can instantly correlate it with events that were triggered during the same time. What you are seeing here is an an event that shows that there was a problem with one of the controller VMs at the same time.

So troubleshooting issues with applications is extremely simple and straightforward now.

66

This is a great demo that shows a good end to end flow of operations that you perform in your datacenter on an everyday basis. What you see here is the entity view in Prism. The entity view lists all your resources in different views by applications, by clusters, by VMs or by hosts.

Lets look at the VM view now. As you can imagine, it lists all theVMs and other related information. You can slice and dice information based on host, you can add the power state etc. Lets now create a VM, you will see how easy it is to create VM. Give it a name, choose the container, choose the vDisk. What you also see is the ability to choose a virtual network, what is included is the ability to spin up a DHCP server and create a virtual network so that when you create VMs, you can automatically choose the virtual network. This makes network infrastructure management extremely simple.

Once the VM is created, now lets filter the VMs and show the new VM. The next action we are going to perform is clone the VM. Lets create, say, 100 clones of that VM we just created. It is extremely simple point to remember that the hypervisor has not been involved in any of the operations so far. All these, like I mentioned before, are file operations. So the entire process is a lot more efficient and quick. So we have a 101 VMs now. Lets power them on now. What you are seeing is that the VMs are starting up automatically across different hosts in the cluster. The automatic initial placement algorithm ensures that VMs are placed on hosts based on the load on the hosts.

So what we have done is created a 100 new VMs. That means, we may have used up a lot of capacity and you see an alert related to that. Now lets go into the capacity trends view. This is a new feature that will come in the 4.5.1 release in a couple of months. You can track capacity usage trends and as you can see, there is a sudden spike in capacity usage after we created the new VMs. We can get into details and see the trends based on storage, CPU and memory. CPU and Memory usage is fine so lets look at the storage now. What you see is that we will run out of storage capacity very soon. We have a few options now look at how we can optimize existing capacity or add additional nodes. Prism automatically looks at VMs that have not been turned on for a while or snapshots that havent been used for long time and suggests removing them to reclaim additional capacity.

For this demo, we will go ahead and add another node to the cluster. Prism is very intelligent in terms of how it discovers new nodes given that we are running out of storage, it will automatically identify a storage heavy node and recommend that you add it to the cluster. You immediately get additional capacity now.

So end to end datacenter operations all managed centrally.
