Act IThe Von Stahlbaums are getting ready to receive their party guests whoarrive, family by family, bearing gifts for the hosts' children, Clara and Fritz.
The presents are all carefully placed beneath the Christmas tree and given tothe children as they step up. Dr. Drosselmeyer, the most mysterious man inthe whole town, arrives with a marvelous group of mechanical dolls and a finenutcracker for Clara.
Fritz is jealous of Clara's new toy and snatches it from her. Spurred on by theother boys, he plays with it so energetically that he breaks it! Drosselmeyerrestores the nutcracker to health and returns it to Clara. The guests perform acontredanse, after which they depart and the hosts prepare for bed.
Clara returns after everyone is asleep and is startled by mice which havegrown to life-size!
Dr. Drosselmeyer reappears and magically causes wondrous things to hap-pen. The tree grows, the toys come to life, and the Nutcracker becomes lifesize to protect Clara from the mice. A furious battle ensues between the toysoldiers led by the Nutcracker and the mice led by their king. At the height ofthe battle Clara strikes the mouse king with her shoe and the defeated miceflee.
The Nutcracker, released from a spell, turns into a handsome prince and takesClara on a magical trip through the Kingdom of Snow and beyond.
Act IIClara's voyage takes her to the Kingdom of Sweets where she is greeted by theSugar Plum Fairy. A series of entertaining divertissements are ordered and theSugar Plum Fairy dances with the Prince. When the festivities are over, everyone bids good-bye to Clara who sorrowfully makes her journeyhomeward.

Salt Creek Ballet - 98 E. Naperville Rd. - Westmont, IL 60559
Dear Friend of the Salt Creek Ballet:
It has been another outstanding year for Salt Creek Ballet! As 1997 comes to a close, it seems anappropriate time to celebrate the achievements of the past twelve months and look ahead to theplans that are about to unfold:
The 1996-97 performance season delighted and entertained audiences and critics alike!Salt Creek Ballet ended its 1996-97 fiscal year on sound financial footing.Fall enrollment is healthy, with a record number of new and returning students. The school facilities look better than ever, with a new floor and updated furniture. The Nutcracker sets have been professionally refurbished for the holiday performances!
In the year ahead there is much to anticipate and the ballet is ready to proceed full speed ahead:
• In keeping with tradition, Thanksgiving weekend marks the beginning of the Nutcracker tour.Guest artists from American Ballet Theatre will perform with Salt Creek's highly trained corpsof dancers and Salt Creek Ballet's Symphony Orchestra will accompany select performances.
• The Spring production of Coppelia will be performed at the College of DuPage. Bringing thiscomplex production to the stage will fulfill a long range goal of our Artistic Director.
• This year will herald the introduction of Salt Creek Ballet's Studio Ensemble. The StudioEnsemble will focus on community outreaches and provide increased performanceopportunities for our students.
• Outreach programs to the elderly and disadvantaged will remain a critical focus for SaltCreek. Building audiences and reaching underserved populations is part of our statedmission.
• Maintaining a safe environment for our students remains a high priority. The installation of asecurity system is a much needed capital improvement that cannot be deferred.
• Office equipment such as computers and an adequate phone system is critical to the smoothfunctioning of the administrative office and will allow us to better serve the families thatutilize the studio.
Choreography, stage sets, costumes, symphony orchestras, world renown guest artists, highlytrained faculty, and the maintenance of an efficient, pleasant, spacious and safe studio do notcome without significant cost!
As plans for the future unfold, the ballet counts on the continued support of friends for thefunding of its programs. I hope you will help us now with a contribution to support our 1997-98efforts. On behalf of Salt Creek Ballef s Board of Directors, I thank you for your generosity andextend our warmest wishes for a joyful holiday season.
Sincerely,
Your tax deductible contribution may be sent to Salt Creek Ballet, 98 East Naperville Rd.,Westmont, IL. 60559.
Special thanks to our many volunteers without whose help theseproductions would not be possible.
