DESCRIPTION
During my time at Howard County General Hospital, I noted a few staff members and patients of mine who had Celiac disease, gluten sensitivities, or avoided gluten for health reasons. For the most part, those who avoided gluten for medical reasons were knowledgeable about the gluten-free diet and its associated pros and cons. However, this was not always the case for those who avoided gluten for health benefits or weight loss. One of my diabetic patients had heard going gluten-free was healthy, but had no idea why. I also overheard a few nurses talking about the health benefits of a gluten-free diet, weight loss being one of them. After talking with my CNM and RDs, I decided I wanted to focus on developing an educational handout explaining the gluten-free diet and debunking common myths associated with it.
