The ingredients of the oatmeal are whole grain rolled oats, sugar, calcium,
carbonate, guar gum, oat flour, caramel color, reduced iron, and vitamin A palmitate.
There are four macromolecules, which are nucleic acids, proteins, fats and
carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are fuel we use known as energy. Carbohydrates are
molecules that contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Carbohydrates form bond
structures, which can become monosaccharide, disaccharides, and polysaccharides.
The total fat content consists of saturated fat, trans fat, polyunsaturated fat, and
monounsaturated fats. This breakdown of fats describes the structure of the
molecule. The total carbohydrates are made up of 3 grams of dietary fiber, 1 gram of
soluble fiber and 9 grams of sugar. This meal would be part of a heart healthy diet.
This meal is beneficial to the heart due to the fiber content. The fiber content aids
the body in maintaining low cholesterol, which is associated with a lower risk of
heart disease. The fat content in this meal is also very low compared to a meal of
meat. (Biology: Understanding Life.) There are also proteins present in this label.
Proteins are macromolecules with enzymes, peptides, and structural subunits. The
amino acids have many functions, which can be to help a chemical reaction take
place. Amino acids can also be used as chemical messengers and also help make the
tissues that support body structures in order to provide movement.
Nucleic acids are not found on this label but they are DNA and RNA. Nucleotides
encode hereditary information, and help decode hereditary information.
