President’s Message Brenda Van Derbur

The first two months of 2020 have been very busy for our branch as we have been finishing the arrangements for the Outstanding Women Awards Luncheon. By the time this Nutshell is emailed, the fun of the luncheon will be upon us while we make ready to move on to other events on our calendars. Margie Poole will be putting out a special issue on the OWL shortly after the event. On March 19, Caroline Howard and Gaile Howland have planned a branch trip to the Brookwood Community. We will take a tour of the facilities and enjoy a lunch. An email was sent out earlier with the specifics on this trip. Look for the email or find the information in this Nutshell. If you have not already done so, please let Gaile or Caroline know if you are planning on attending. This event will take the place of our usual evening branch meeting for March. Recently you received an email copy of the last University Texas Women which is the newsletter for AAUW Texas. In this issue were included short biographies for the women across Texas running for AAUW state offices. I hope you noticed that there are three women from our branch that have been nominated for state offices. Margie Poole is a candidate for Vice President of Funds, Mary Smith for the position of Secretary, and Betsy Calabro for South District Representative. Voting for the state officers will be done electronically on your computer. You will receive an email through Constant Contact on April 1, 2020 with the ballot to vote for the state board positions. I am sure we all want to vote and support our branch members. The 49th biennial convening of AAUW Texas will be held on April 17-18, 2020, in Pflugerville, Texas at the Courtyard by Marriott Austin/Pflugerville. If you are interested in attending, the reservation information for the Marriott is available on the homepage of the AAUW Texas website (https://aauw-tx.aauw.net/), and the registration for the convening can be found by typing “2020 Convening” in the search box. Early Bird Registration lasts through March 1st and saves you $50.00. Please let me know if you are planning on attending. (Brenda Van Derbur: 281-635-4747, [email protected] )

FUN and Interesting Way to Earn Outreach Points

by Elizabeth Wilson

Volunteers are needed for the Klein ISD Gifted and Talented Research Expo. I received an e-

mail from Anne Vallette stating “We are reaching out to you as educators of Klein ISD Gifted

and Talented students. We are holding our annual Research Expo: 2020 Vision: InSIGHTful

Investigations on March 26 and 27 and we would love to invite members of NHC AAUW to

participate!

Each year students in Klein ISD research topics of their choice ranging anywhere from

neurosurgeons to rocket fuel to the History of Skyscrapers! Check out these video highlights

from 2019! Each student has a chance to share his or her work with others in the district, as well

as workforce professionals. Many students choose to have an external evaluator from the field of

study they have chosen, to give them feedback about their research.

This is where we come in! Professionals, or retired professionals, are needed to volunteer their

time to be an appraiser of student research. There are multiple days and sessions for which you

can volunteer. If you would like to be a part of this amazing event, please follow the link to the

Google Form Site and fill out the Google Form. You will be contacted by a district coordinator

from the Advanced Academics Department..

The Google Form linked above allows you to volunteer in three different capacities –

Appraiser- critical review and comments of project

General volunteer - lend a hand

Informal feedback - make sure every student has someone visit them.

I have already gone to the site; and clicked on the blue link - it is easy to volunteer.

SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP, BUT DON’T FORGET AMAZONSMILE!!!!

Fellowship Fund from then on. If a product is eligible, we get credit for it. So, support us.

We only get a little, but every little bit helps!!!!!

Great Discussions

Great Decisions is a discussion group created by the Foreign Policy Association to facilitate conversation on American foreign policy as it impacts other countries. Each year we select 4 topics from the Great Decisions Briefing Book, which can be purchased for $30.00 online at www.GreatDecisions.org or from the Brazos Bookstore at 2421 Bissonnet St. Coordinator Mary Jane Petrick says, “The New Year has brought new and exciting Great Decisions topics. We will meet at 7:00 pm for snacks and adult beverages or non-adult beverages with the discussion starting at 7:30 pm.” Please RSVP to the hostess so she knows how many people to prepare for. If you are not a hostess, please consider moderating one of the topics. All it really amounts to is reading the questions and allowing everyone to participate. If you know of anyone of interest on a topic, please invite them to attend. After living, working, or traveling to an area, their input would be invaluable.

Dale Chihuly – His Life and Works Presented by Sue Ann Lurcott

Over the course of five decades, Chihuly has explored new and old techniques, pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. He draws inspiration from the world around him, creating statements using color and form to capture the imagination, and catapult beyond conventional ideas of function and beauty. He pioneered a new way of working, utilizing gravity and centrifugal force to let molten glass find its shape in its own organic way. Asymmetry and irregularity are a defining principle of his work. Diane Boundy and Beverly Johnson will bring refreshments. Kay Holland will be the greeter.

PLEASE CONTACT SUE MASON IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE A TRIP DURING THE 2020-2021 SCHEDULE!
