Hospital Dedication

the lips of the hundreds gathered that day, " To this hospital whosedoors will stay open always, whose lights will be a lighthouse to the sick, whose wards will admit the suffering and whose staff will administer theirmedical skills in the name of Christ, we dedicate and name it, "ChidamoyoChristian Hospital With our hearts, our minds, our wills, our strengthwe dedicate this hospital, to the purpose of its existence and reason forits calling in Christ, as it takes its place among those hospitals dedicatedto the task of alleviating the suffering of Mankind." The debts were notcleared before dedication, so we beg you to consider the letters of appealwhich we recently sent out.

First Service is Exciting

The first service for the patients was held last night,January 24th.in the hospital chapel. Sunday services will also be held with those services geared to the patients. Each Wednesday evening though, we'll have thefilmstrips and service.

Last night Mr. and Mrs. Tsuro accepted Christ and were baptized. They are both on the staff and very fine people. Mr. Tsuro is the head"orderly" just under Madonna. As I was taking the confessions, a young ladywho Ammermans have been talking with (she is working for them in the house)stepped forward and will be baptized today. When the service had closed, astrong man whom we have known for several years and was here to help carefor his mother-in-law who was a patient, walked up and said he wanted totake Christ as his Saviour and be baptized. So today again the Chapel Baptistry will be used.

For this month I guess I'll close, but will be anxious for nextmonth to report what God is doing through your gifts, as we anticipate exciting service each day of the weeks. May God richly bless you.

In His Love and Con^assion,

Ziden and Helen

Greetings in the name ' of Christ. The aftermath of the hospitaldedication, isn't what we expected at all. We h^d though"^ things wouldquiet down" a little bit, but. there were still many things to be doneto finish up. Much excitement had been created toward the dedication, and praise God we are still "wound up" with new excitement. Within thefirst three weeks after dedication seventeen people accepted Christ andwere baptized in the new hospital Chapel. Several of the hospital construction crew have also become Christians, and now several more arestrongly indicating their belief in Jesus Christ, and desire to beobedient to Him. A slide set is now ready about the hospital.

Returning To RehearseVftiat God Has Done

After much prayer and thought, we have tentatively plann^d^o cometo the U. S.A, and report to you beginning this September 1968. Wehave completed the normal terra for here, but had previously thought ofstaying longer.

It will be impossible to report to all churches and Individualswho have given to the hospital part of the program. May we suggestthat some of you sponser area services, as we would like for all contributors to hear the story of what God has done with their love and willingness to share.

We mainly would like to be with the regular supporters, reportingfully and discussing freely what has been done; and, outline futureplans for your consideration. Our hope is that you would contact uswith your preference of time, and we'll try to work it all out to yourconvenience.

I regret that Helen, much of the time, must remain with our threechildren, two of whom will be in school at Metz, Missouri near to herfolks home and also to one of our sponsoring churches.

Travel funds to the States are needed and we are confident thatyou will be able to help sufficiently in this as well, so that we candepart from Rhodesia about mid-August, Lord willing.

Hoping Things SoonTurn Out Right

As of today the medicine did not discourage the tapeworms frommaking their homes in Karolyn and Lynda the first try; but, apparentlythe amoeba have gone away from all. Other intruders interrupted Heleniworm free period and now we'll see what the medicine will do to the"strongyloids'*. Karolyn and Lynda are again on a three day no-soliddiet before the attack on the tapeworms will be made by the forces ofmedicine again.

It really isn't as bad as it sounds, I guess. We would ask yourprayers though, knowing that God will grant new strength. We are sofortunate to have the hospital nearby.

May God grant each of you wisdom in all things, and grace andpeace sufficient for each day. Again we thaiik you for your concern andlove. ' '•

Greetings in the name of our Redeemer. Several weeks have passedsince we last wrote; and, so many things have happened that it is hardto know what to tell in this short letter.

"White unto Harvesb"

We have seen the power of God bring about 400 a year to repentance; but, this year we are all overwhelmed by the tremendous responses,The medical outreach, assisted by an African Evangelist who arrived recently to work in the hospital, is amazing. New areas are opening allaround us, but time is short and valuable in the world today. Rhodesiaseems more ready than ever to turn toward God.

"To Rehearse all Things in the U.S.A."

Vve are thrilled with the prospect of coming to you to rehearsewhat God has done through your efforts in us and others. At the sametime we will regret being away at this strategic time. Not only willwe rehearse what has been done, but are anxious to discuss with youpl^s- for a new venture in Rhodesia to strengthen local leaders and .

each^ew areas. Lord willing, we will be moving 120 miles away toSinoia,; after our furlough, where we can spearhead a new program.

We are thankful for the many requests already flowing in for revivals, Faith Promise Conferences, and other speaking engagements. Onlythrough area meetings will we be able to report to all and fulfill therequests. We are surprised, yet feel honored by these and we pray theLord will use us for His Glory.

"With Great Response go Problems"

The unfolding opportunities and response is wonderful. At thesame time we have, and continue to face problems. VVe cannot reach forward u'ntil the debt on the hospital chapel is paid, and though we arescheduled to come to the U.S. in August, there is yet a need for furlough funds. These are only financial problems, but would plead to youfor sacrificial help and prayers in the next two months, especially.

The rate of growth in the church brings us face to face with leadership needs. On the other hand we are daily met with having to turn downrequests to "come and preach." Witchcraft and traditions still temptsome of the new Christians. Other problems come and go with the strengthof God.

There is so much to do in.the next tv/o months to pick up the manyloose ends, after having rushed from one thing to another. However, itis good to see these things being completed.

God has certainly blonsed us in so many ways. One of these greatblessings is our association with you who are being so wonderful in seeking the lost. Vi/e are ever thankful to you for the vital part you aretaking in bringing souls to Christ. May God richly bless our ministrywith you for His Glory and Honor.

CENTRAL AFRICA MISSION, CHIDAMOYO

%The piercing sim beat down on us thatday in June 1962 when the first foundationsand clearing were being started for Chida-moyo Mission. An old African evangelisthad first brought the white man here, andDavid Grubbs had been thrilled with the opportunity. Now the Ziden Nutt family washere to begin the work. The African evangelist moved here along with other to help, and soon people realized that we had not cometo set up a market and isell their wives toAmerica, but that God loved them throughus.

A Ch ristian Day School was begun andplans of development took shape each day.In 1963, on a lovely July day, the Ammer-man family arrived to join the work. Thenin May of 1966 the Lord directed the CharlesKelley family to this growing harvest field.

, A Madonna Burget, R.N. was transferred here^ by Dr. Pruett to assume responsibility for

the medical practice in January 1967. OlaMarion arrived in September 1967 to teachthe missionary children.

In the meantime four Christian DaySchools were built throughout the area. Ahospital was built and a church building constructed. January of 1968 found the Dr.Dale Erickson family coming and taking overthe medical work.

Through the total efforts made, over400 a year have been converted by the powerof the Gospel, and many churches started.

NEEDS

PrayerFilmstrips: especially on the life of

Christ, Acts, and other useful teachingfilmstrips.

Flannelgraph materials.Funds for medical equipment.

GOALS

To establish the young churches. To see an African leadership rise up

among the churches. To better equip the Christian school

teachers to instruct the hundreds of studentsin their daily Bible periods.

The year 1967 at Chidamoyo Mission inthe north central section of the country ofRhodesia was most eventful.

The Charles Kelleys returned to theStates upon the advice of three attending

doctors in Rhodesia for removal of a hen-egg-size tumor located in the interior ofChuck's throat. Miss Madonna Burget R.N.came from Mashoko Christian Hosptial toserve as full time nurse in opening the newChristian Hostpial at Chidamoyo. Sometimes she had as many as 40 patients underher care.

With the Kelleys and the Ammermansin the States, the work load fell on the ZidenNutts and Miss Burget. The work involvesthree areas; evangelism, education andmedicine. Approximately 400 conversionsresulted from the total efforts of the missionin 1967. In the four Christian Day Schoolsthe 1968 enrollment is 467 students. Threeclassrooms have been added to the existingschool buildings which already had 12 rooms. One teacher's home was also added.

Due to the success of surgery and treatment, the Kelleys returned the latter partof May. In the middle of July the Ammermans returned from their year of furlough.

Kelleys began the construction of theirhouse. Ammermans had raised funds for achurch building at the mission which was begun at once. The church building was finishedquickly and most economically. It was dedicated December 24, 1967.

In September Miss Ola Marion joinedthe work as teacher of our children and workerin the ladies' work.

On January 17, 1968 Dr. Dale Ericksonarrived to join this wonderful ministry. Jan.30 was the dedication of the hosptial. It wasa big day. Six tribal chiefs with their messengers were present along with many hundreds of people. Praise be to God for whatHe has brought about through His people, tothe first three weeks after the hospital dedication, 16 were baptized in it's chapel. Twopreaching points have been established asresults of the hospital ministry.

Hope in Christ is a real necessity. Thepeople drift aimlessly without an anchor. Aneffective anchor cannot be found in money, clothes, better houses or higher cultural level.Only in Jesus can these people have an anchorto keep their souls for all eternity.

Greetings in the name of Christ. The miles went quiclcly as we :journeyed on the airliner from Salisbury, Rhodesia to Chicago, Illinois.Total flight time was about twenty-twoJ hours traveling at about 550. M.P.H.Vile were met in Chicago at 5 P*M., August 5th by a bus from the Church at^Lowell, Indiana which brought loved ones and friends.

Farewell From Rhodesia

It was hard leaving Rhodesia; For, it. seems that the work Isnow blossoming out with unlimited opportunities as never before since wemoved there seven years ago. About 300 to 400 people of Chief Dandawa'sarea, including many leaders attended as well and brought gifts and wordsof thanks. Pood was served to all as well and we enjoyed a rich timetogether. We are anxious to return as soon as. possible in mid-1969.

While In The U.S.A.

•We are amazed at the requests for speaking dates and feelhonored that God is opening these opportunities to preach the Gospel andpresent it's effect as preached in Rhodesia this past missionary term. There are many to report too, especially because we were involved in theChristian Hospital program so closely, l/i/e hope we can see many of youpersonally to report and express our thanks. I'll be teaching a classat the 21st National Missionary Convention, and hope to see many of youthere.

Helen and the children will settlt near the Church at Rlnehart,(near Horton, Missouri) where two of our three children will attend school

W© regret that we'll be apart, and thus not able to visit you as a family.

You are so wonderful and sacrificial in your giving and we makeno apology when asking you to continue giving while we are here in theU.S.A. The hospital "chapel is not yet paid for, and with about 25 to 40being converted each month through the chaplaincy program, we are thrilledand know that it is worth whatever sacrifice we can possibly make. W© hadto borrow some funds for our travel to the U.S. and these must be returned.

Reports Thus Par

We began speaking immediately upon arrival and are happy forthe way in which people are receiving the report. They are excited atseeing the leopard skin; the witchdoctor's magic stick; and, also thefilm of the witchdoctors; and, especially the witness being brought tothe people.

They are thrilled, as we are, at the way God is working throughthe Gospel which we and others preach. We pray that God will use useffectively this year as we visit many of you. We know that you will bea blessing to us, and we pray that God will make us a blessing to you.It is so kind of you to express your love through prayers and support, ...and we thank you for the part you are taking in seeing that we can gowith the Gospel throughout the world. May He richly bless you in yourlabors both at home and abroad.

A Witness Through MedicineIt was the ninth of April 1964, that the mis-

sionaries at Chidamoyo, in consultation with Dr.\ Pruett, decided to begin the hospital project. This^wouldnot only fulfi 11 our promise to the government

rT' '•:;•• *3nd local people which we had to make previously

'i ' ' gi'lrallowed in the area; but, more than this itwould open avenues^ never travelled jnto^ the^heartsr'l j *« survey for a site. A campaign had already beenChristian Hospital - Chidamoyo Mission launched in the U.S.A. while Ziden was on furlough;

WALTER BIRNEY would lead in the campaign. Bricks had been made, and now the moment had come for groundbreaking.

Two years of sweat and toil in construction and sacrifice by those who are giving to this project produceda 22,000 square foot building at the cost of $3.50 per square foot. This includes the lovely chapel which is notyet paid for. We request your prayers and help in this regard.

Christian Hospital-ChidamoyoMi ssion was dedicated on the 20th of January, 1968, and now stands as a beaconof light —not only to physical suffering, but ever pointing the way of the thousands who will enter to Jesus, theGreat Physician. Dr. Dale Erickson is now in charge of the hospital and cost of operation, supplemented by theRhodesian Government and hospital fees of the patients.

The work is |ust beginning, and we are thrilled at the many conversions through the work of the medical staffand the hospital chaplain.

Present Goals - "That They May Know"Having consulted with other missionaries, and praying for some time, the Ziden L. Nutt family will transfer to

Sinoia, Lord willing. They will relieve the Dole E. Marshall family who will be due for furlough.Having lived inRhodesia seven years, Ziden will produce filmstrips based around African culture and language,

using them in nightly gospel meetings, and olso in a concentrated program for training local church leaders.

,JF /M ^ The government and previous patterns of mi ssions in Rhodesiag / /m r necessitated a resident missionary. The government had asked

/ Doctor DENNIS D. PRUETT about the Central Africa Mission/ m building a hospital in the area of the new mission, and so heI / • ^ joined us on several trips to help select the exact site. While^ camping in the bush land and under the beautiful stars of the

Southern Cross, plans were made and prayers offered. In June1962 the original grant for 100 acres of land was received, and

^ clearning started on the site."Evangelist Miga Cbikanda gy 1963 several churches hod been started and the first Chris*

in July of 1963, Prayers and plans continued to be fulfilled. Ladies groups were starting, special classes ofscripture in the schools begun, and, a class for young recruits.

In August 1965 the foundcdion for a major hospital was staked off and work begun. An airstrip had been hackedout of the bush at Chidamoyo by volunteer labor. Twelve farms and schools were being preached in, and thereseemed to be no limit to thei many oppor-tumtles, e^^

How privileged weare to serve our Lord in Rhodesia. We are thankful to God for the opportunity, and to you whosupport us we would express our appreciation. We work and pray that in all things people will be led out of darkness into Light, praising ^odlall the day l^g.
