Assisted Living & Memory Care Communities

Offer help with non-medical aspects of daily activities in an atmosphere of separate, pri-

vate living units. In addition to providing meals, transportation for medical appoint-ments, activities and pleasure trips, assist-ed living may supply: linens and personal laundry service, assistance with dressing and bathing, reminder regarding medica-tion, and assistance with eating, transfer-ring to and from a wheelchair, toileting, etc. The best candidate for assisted living is someone who needs help with daily ac-tivities, but doesn’t need ‘round the clock’ skilled nursing care. The ideal facility pro-vides services and personal assistance in a group setting that helps its resident’s lead active, healthy lives. In many cases, as-sisted living communities offer extensive services for early stage Alzheimer’s disease patients. Private pay rates vary depending on care and services needed. A physician’s approval is required for admission.

Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Communi-ties Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenera-tive disease that attacks the brain, result-ing in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. It is only one of several forms of dementia. Alzheimer’s care communi-ties are special units or free-standing com-munities designed to sensitively care for those with Alzheimer’s or memory related disorders. These communities offer safe and secure residential care for those who need 24-hour assistance. Other senior liv-ing environments may be appropriate for residents in early, or even mid stages of the disease. However, unless they have a spe-cialized dementia unit, transfer from an-other facility will be required as the disease progresses. A family’s private resources or long- term care insurance generally funds Alzheimer’s care communities.

Leisure

Life LessoNs for Dogs AND Pet PAreNts

Leash pulling, potty training issues, pet anxi-ety – these are just a few everyday challenges that trouble many pet parents. In fact, behav-ioral problems are cited in the list of top rea-sons dogs are put in shelters, according to the American Humane Association.

Dogs are always learning, whether you’re inten-tionally teaching them or not. Teaching pets rules and using proper training techniques will prevent them from making up their own house rules and creating frustrating situations.

In order to help pets learn appropriate behav-ior, pet parents need to take an active role in canine education. Some of that learning can be accomplished at home, but many pet parents have found working with a professional dog trainer is much more effective – for them as well as their dogs.

“The goal of a good training program is to teach pet parents how to communicate effec-tively with their dogs,” said Debbie McKnight, training expert with PetSmart. “Positive, con-sistent communication helps create better rela-tionships between dogs and their pet parents.”

McKnight says that professional training is not an alternative to training your dog at home, it complements it. “Pet training works a lot like education for children,” she said. “A teacher provides her students with basic knowledge,

and then the student does homework to fur-ther learn the materials.”

While a number of different training methods are available, McKnight says that PetSmart’s six-week training classes are based on the effec-tive principles of operant conditioning, which concentrate on positive reinforcement. In the simplest terms, positive reinforcement means rewarding the dog for doing the behaviors you want in order to get him to do those behaviors more often. “Not only is it the most effective way to train, but positive reinforcement is also the most humane and fun for both you and your pet.”

When you begin a training program, the As-sociation of Pet Dog Trainers recommends that you:

• Have your dog wear the type of collar and leash specified by the trainer. • Use high-quality training treats. • Wear comfortable, flat, close-toed shoes and comfortable clothes allowing you to move easily. • Make sure your pet relieves itself before class so they won’t need to go during the training session. • Forgo feeding or only feed a very light meal before training so the treats will be desired by the dog.

“Proper pet training is key to your dog becom-ing a socially well-adjusted family member,” said McKnight. “Whether you have a new puppy or an adult dog, you and your pet can both learn some new tricks that will ensure a happy, healthy relationship.”

Mom was a Bargain Hunter Extraordinaire…

At our house, “back to school” meant clothes shopping! I’ll never forget the year that we all got the same red dress from the sale rack - what a teasing we got from the kids at school. We looked like the Von Trapp Family Singers, but without the great voices. When Mom was on a mission to make a buck go far, there was no stopping her.

It is difficult for Mom now. I watch her struggle to write checks and balance her checkbook. She gets upset about the smallest tasks, like following directions to her favorite cookie recipe, and confused when driving or pulling together an outfit for church. The early signs of memory loss can be difficult to understand and more difficult to admit.

If you have concerns, visit Áegis Living with your parent. We are the trusted senior living provider, specializing in memory care and assisted living. Our community provides the finest care given by the most committed staff.

Come in for a tour. We’ll help you understand what memory loss is and how your parent can thrive and enjoy life at Áegis.

Health

Summer is here, which means swimming, picnics and barbecues. These warmer days encourage many people to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. However, many are unaware of the serious consequences that can develop from sun exposure, including advanced skin cancer.

An estimated one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. Most cases can be cured if caught early and treated when the disease is re-stricted to a small area. However, in some instances the cancer may come back or spread to other parts of the body. When skin cancer becomes advanced, the disease can be debilitating and, in some cases, may even become deadly.

A diagnosis at this advanced stage can be devastating. According to a recent online survey of people affected by advanced skin cancer, *people diagnosed with this dis-ease often feel scared, overwhelmed and isolated.

However, a new online resource called Faces of Skin Cancer provides resources that can help. The program offers people with advanced skin cancer and their care-givers an opportunity to hear from oth-ers and share their experiences with those who’ve been affected.

Faces of Skin Cancer aims to make a dif-ference in the lives of those affected by ad-vanced skin cancer by offering a platform for sharing stories.

The website features stories of people af-fected by advanced skin cancer and their experiences, including ways they have coped with this disease. The website also allows for visitors to share their own sto-ries about advanced skin cancer. For each story submitted, $1 will be donated to ad-vanced skin cancer programs.

To learn more about the lives of those af-fected by advanced skin cancer, please visit www.facesofskincancer.org and view the Faces of Skin Cancer video. One dollar will be donated to advanced skin cancer programs for each video view.

Remember, it is always important to be mindful of the sun’s harmful rays even when the sun is not out. Skin should be protected by wearing tightly woven cloth-ing and a wide-brimmed hat, applying sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher and seeking shade.

*Survey of 238 respondents was conduct-ed in March 2012 on behalf of Genen-tech, The Skin Cancer Foundation and Melanoma Research Foundation.

Did You Know? • More than 65 percent of those with advanced skin cancer did not know what advanced skin cancer was at diagnosis. • Those polled said the best resources were from their doctor and online. • More than 75 percent don’t believe or aren’t sure there is enough information available about advanced skin cancer.

tiPs for Whiter teeth AND A Brighter smiLe

Are you proud of your smile? Or do stains on your teeth keep you from smiling as much as you’d like?

According to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) survey, 99.7 percent of adults feel that a smile is an im-portant social asset. Yet, when asked what they’d like to improve most about their smiles, the most common response was to have whiter and brighter teeth.

Teeth whitening procedures and products have become a rapidly growing business. A separate survey conducted by the AACD in 2011, found that 91 percent of cosmet-ic dentists said that they performed whit-ening procedures on their patients. And 32 percent said they expected that number to increase in 2012.

Although getting teeth whitened by a professional may be popular, it can also be expensive. The good news is there are many affordable and convenient alterna-tives that will help you achieve a bright, white smile.

• Start with a checkup. A professional cleaning and mouth exam is your first step to whiter teeth. Make sure you get any cavities treated and talk to your dentist about which whitening methods you should use. Bleaching isn’t for everyone and your dentist will help determine if you’re a good candidate. • Watch what you eat. Darker foods and beverages can stain your teeth. Limit your exposure to coffee, tea, red wine, colas, and dark foods like beets and berries. When drinking beverages that stain, use a straw to help minimize discoloration. Lastly, brush or rinse as soon as you can after eating or drinking stain-causing foods. • Practice good oral hygiene. Brush at least two times a day, and floss at least once a day. • Use a whitening toothpaste. These products contain polishing or chemical agents that help remove surface stains.

Toothpastes such as the new line of ARM & HAMMER® toothpaste with Stain Defense™ are specially formulated to gently remove plaque and surface stains with baking soda, while targeting tough stains with peroxide. The new Stain De-fense™ technology also helps prevent new stains from setting. Learn more at www.armandhammer.com.

Achieving a healthy, white smile is easy to do if you follow these tips. Overall, it is important to watch what you eat and drink, and make sure to keep your teeth and mouth clean. By practicing good oral hygiene you can achieve a smile of which you can be proud. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Services

Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, cameras – electronic devices are a big part of American life. In fact, Americans own an average of 24 elec-tronic products per household, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. With technology changing so rapidly and new “it” devices hitting the market every few months, a lot of those devices get dis-carded quickly. That adds up to a lot of potential e-waste.

In fact, a recent survey sponsored by RadioShack found: • More than 90 million American adults 18 and over have unused technology products lying around the house. • As part of that pile of retired tech, a third of mobile phone users report owning unused phones — and more than half of those with unused phones own two or more.

Some unused electronics just collect dust, but many get thrown away. The Environmen-tal Protection Agency’s most re-cent report showed that nearly 1.8 million tons of e-waste was simply trashed.

Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to keep old electronics out of the waste stream.

Donate. Donations give schools, non-profits and lower-income families access to equipment they might not otherwise afford. Before donating, check with the organization to see what they need.

Trade Up. If you are ready to upgrade to something new, programs such as Ra-dioShack’s Trade & Save let you swap re-tired technology for store credit toward

your purchase. Simply bring eligible working electronics and accessories to a participating store or log on to www.ra-dioshacktradeandsave.com for appraisal information. When you complete your trade in a store, you’ll immediately receive the appraised value in the form of a store gift card (except where prohibited by law). Trade-ins may also be completed via mail by requesting a free shipping label avail-able on the program website. In that case, a store gift card for the trade-in value will be mailed after the product is received. There’s even a free Trade & Save app avail-able to appraise your unused technology using iOS and Android devices. Products traded in are refurbished or recycled.

Recycle. Electronics in nonworking con-dition should be recycled. Check www.Earth911.com or www.e-stewards.org to find a recycling center near you. Many states have regulations about disposing

and recycling electronics. Learn more about your state’s laws at www.electronicstakeback.com.

Don’t Forget the Batteries. Recy-cling your rechargeable batteries is another easy step you can take. Retailers like RadioShack also recycle rechargeable batteries. To date, the company has collected more than 5 million pounds in rechargeable batteries through

Call2Recycle (www.Call2Recycle.org).

Don’t let your old electronics gather dust or add to the waste stream. It just takes a few simple steps to put your devices to better use.

cookiNg for oNe?use Your freezer

If busy nights have family and friends eating at different times, the freezer can be your greatest asset. With a little plan-ning and some freezer space, you can cre-ate great meals for yourself in no time.

Buy in Bulk – One great way to save yourself time and hassle is to purchase items you’ll use again and again in bulk. Breads, meats, veg-etables, fruits, nuts and seeds all store well in the freezer. Purchasing these in-gredients in bulk, and freezing them in small quantities will allow you to grab and thaw what you need, when you need it. Resealable freezer bags are a great way to store small portions flat, so they stack up neatly and won’t take up a lot of room.

Batch Cook – Cooking several options at once is a great way to ensure you’ll save time throughout the busy week. Spend a weekend afternoon cooking your favorite soups, stews or casseroles. Then divide them up into single serving portions and freeze. Write the date and contents on each package, and as you add food to the freezer, move older packages to the front, so you don’t forget about them. With the freezer, you can avoid purchasing fast food or foods heavy with preservatives.

Take Advantage of Convenient and Deli-cious Meals – An even easier and more time efficient way to cook for one is to prepare tasty, fuss-free, and preservative-

free meals such as new Stouffer’s® Farm-ers’ Harvest® steam meals-for-one. With these flavorful steam meals that are avail-able in five varieties, you can enjoy the freshly-prepared taste of crisp vegetables, tender premium meats, indulgent sauc-es, and perfectly steamed pastas that are ready in minutes.

Buy Versatile In-gredients – Some-times all you need for a week’s worth of great food are a few key items that can be adapted to fit your favorite meals. Chicken and other

lean meats can be stored in your freezer until needed and are great in soups, que-sadillas, casseroles, salads and more. Fro-zen mixed vegetables can be included in pot pies, stews and as a side dish. Make sure you stock your spice rack with sea-sonings that can help kick up your dishes.

Plan for Spontaneity – Having a well-stocked freezer and pantry lets you cre-ate a delicious recipe whenever the mood strikes. Keep a variety of pastas and rice on hand, along with canned tomatoes, beans, broth, cheeses, herbs and spices. You’ll become a weeknight gourmet cook in no time.

To learn more about the flavorful Farm-ers’ Harvest steam meals for one and other entrees from Stouffer’s, visit www.stouffers.com.

Health

If you are on Medicare and have had a re-cent hospital stay, experts say there is about a 1-in-5 chance you will find yourself back in the hospital again within a month. Hos-pital readmissions are not only expensive they are hard on both patients and fami-lies. According to analysts, three-fourths of these readmissions are potentially avoid-able.

Now, the Nevada Partnership for Value-driven Healthcare (NPV) has an initiative with an ultimate goal is reducing these hos-pital readmissions by at least 10%.

Typically, problems begin when patients re-ceive inadequate preparation for discharge from the hospital. The handover from the hospital to outpatient providers is poorly handled, and patients and their family caregivers are left to cope on their own with medical issues that they don’t understand. In fact, only about half of discharged pa-tients follow up with their primary-care physicians after they leave the hospital, and those who don’t are much more likely to be readmitted than those who do see a doctor.

“Have we properly prepared the patient for a return home?” asks Deborah Huber, executive director of the non-profit organi-zation HealthInsight, a prominent member of the NPV. “Poor communication is at the heart of the problem.”

Huber points out that too often people released from hospital care do not know when to go to their primary-care doctor, or which medications to take, or the costs involved. Making matters worse, there are no clear lines of authority. As a result, the system sets these individuals up to fail and creates a dangerous situation for patients, according to Brian Jack, an expert on hos-pital engineering.

In one study, for example, 78 percent of patients discharged from the ER did not understand their diagnosis, their ER treat-ment, home care instructions, or warnings signs of when to return to the hospital. Health care providers are partly responsible for this lack of comprehension.

IHI, a Boston-based nonprofit organiza-tion, advises hospitals and other institu-tions to use a patient-centered approach that looks at post-discharge care through a patient’s eyes. By doing “deep dives” into several patient histories, IHI says, and find-ing out why the patients were readmitted, it’s possible to understand where the entire process falls short and begin to fix it.

Another area that needs improvement has to do with what is called the transitions of care…do the health care providers receiv-ing the patient know what the ones send-ing the patient home knows? “The patient gets stuck in the middle. They don’t know what to do,” Huber noted. And what about Advanced Planning…end of life care? Have patients and their families made these ul-timate decisions? If not, these issues must be addressed. What if patients don’t want to go back to the hospital? Are they aware of what palliative care or hospice can do? “Medicare provides a good hospice benefit. The whole family can benefit from that.” Here the goal is to make someone as com-fortable as possible and give family mem-bers the support they need to help them through this difficult time.

Finally, Huber observes “this is a commu-nity problem, not merely a hospital prob-lem.” This community effort will produce sustainable and replicable strategies to achieve high-value health care for individu-als in our communities and save potentially millions of dollars in healthcare costs.

Have you ever thought about seeing a chiropractor but decided not to because you had some doubts or concerns? Someone you know may have shared their experiences with seeing a doctor of chiro-practic. Or, maybe you have heard some stories about chiropractors. As a chiropractor, please al-low me to tell you a little about chiropractic care. First, let me as-sure you that chiroprac-tors are not here to replace your family physician or any other specialist that you may need. In fact, I will often confer with your other doctors on a regular basis to insure that you are getting the best care for your needs and that all of your doctors are kept “in the loop” regarding your treatment and condition. Chiropractors are experts at treating the spine and nervous system to ensure that the spine is free of any nerve pressure that can affect the body. Nerve pressure can cause pain, numbness, pins and needles, weakness in the arms and legs, and can also affect your overall health because the nervous system controls and coordinates all of the functions of your body. In my twenty- four years of prac-tice, many patients have told me that their irregular bowel movements have become regular since their lower back pain has gotten better. They also commonly report that the elimination of their neck or back

pain has resulted in increased strength in their arms and legs and that their head-aches have gone away. And, I frequently hear that patients can move their necks more freely, so they drive more safely and with less discomfort. Chiropractic care

will effectively treat whip-lash from car accidents and chronic pain, as well as other injuries. Arthritis and diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain re-sulting from diabetes) have also responded well to chi-ropractic care. This is not to say that chiropractic is a cure to either condition, but treatment of both of

these conditions in my practice has given patients tremendous relief. Chiropractors use many differ-ent treatment techniques which are cus-tomized to the individual patient’s needs and are really quite gentle. Sometimes a chiropractic adjustment, which involves a gentle movement of a specific vertebra of the spine, is all that is required to help a patient. Exercise and physical therapy modalities are used to help certain condi-tions as well. As a chiropractor, I want you to be in the best of health and free of pain. I am always here to help you with any ques-tions or concerns you may have. Please feel free to give me a call any time so I can help you personally, or with the needs of a loved one .

Every day, more and more health benefits are being associated with chocolate and Americans are in the know – nine in ten Americans are aware of the health benefits associated with co-coa and dark chocolate, according to Health-Focus. But, the truth is, the benefits come from the cocoa flavanols – not from how dark the chocolate is or the percent of cocoa, also known as cacao.

As you age, your blood vessels may become less flexible and less able to expand when needed to keep circulation running smoothly. Cocoa flavanols are scientifically proven to help sup-port healthy circulation by helping your blood vessels stay flexible and expand as needed.

Guaranteed cocoa flavanol levels can be found in CocoaVia, a powdered daily cocoa extract supplement that delivers 250 mg of powerful cocoa flavanols in every serving. It is offered in both chocolate and fruit flavors.

Jody Lewis, Pharm.D. Pharmacy Supervisor for CVS/pharmacy

Today’s baby boomers are leading more ac-tive lifestyles than ever but are also facing new health risks. As they age, medications are prescribed for ailments and health con-cerns; in fact, more than 30 million Amer-icans take five or more prescription drugs on a regular basis. This issue of people managing multiple prescriptions, known as “polypharmacy,” is a growing concern as the increase in medication combina-tions can lead to serious adverse side ef-fects.

To help prevent harmful drug interactions or avoidable side effects, CVS pharmacists frequently help seniors effectively manage their multiple medications. Here are my tips for adhering to a multiple medication routine and protecting your overall health:

Fill your prescriptions at one pharmacy. One way to prevent unknown drug inter-actions is to have your medications filled at one pharmacy. Having a single “phar-macy home” gives your pharmacist insight to all of the medications you are taking, al-lowing him or her to prevent any harmful drug interactions. Make the switch to one pharmacy home and ensure your medica-tion regimen is fully effective.

Get to know your pharmacist. When fill-ing your prescriptions at one pharmacy home, it’s easy to develop a relationship with your pharmacist. Confide in your pharmacist as they have insight to your unique medication regimen and can make the best recommendations for you. Don’t be afraid to voice concerns, such as dis-

comfort from side effects, so your pharma-cist can make recommendations to help you on your path to better health.

Set routines for taking medication. To get into the habit of taking your medications, I recommend trying to work them into your daily routine. If your medications can be taken with food, incorporate them into your breakfast meal or take them after lunch or dinner. Be sure to work with your pharmacist before implementing a routine as some medications have very specific in-structions in order to be fully effective.

Read the fine print. When taking multiple medications, it’s important to understand and adhere to all medication instructions. In order to be most effective, some pre-scriptions need to be taken at a specific time of day or for a certain length of time. Others may have side effects and should not be taken with certain food, drinks or other medications. If you have questions on adherence or instructions, talk to your pharmacist and they can clarify any confu-sion.

Think twice before supplementing. Like many seniors, you probably incorporate supplements, vitamins or over-the-coun-ter drugs into your medication routine. While many supplements can benefit your overall health, some may interfere with your prescriptions. Consult your pharma-cist about any current or new supplements you plan on taking to ensure you are pre-venting harmful drug interactions while benefiting your overall health.
