ON THE COVER, abOVE aNd iNsidE: Portland-based artist Chea-Yinn Lee (aka Reese), who is from Malaysia, first began cutting shapes of chubby birds out of pretty paper, and quickly

graduated to creating intricate scenes of the imagined lives of these birds.

Pretty soon, no animals (shapes of them, anyway) were spared from being cut out and

pasted onto upcycled cardboard and card stock, and from that, Yellowcake Crafts was born.

These original paper art collages are available as cards, prints, pins, pendants, magnets and art

blocks at YellowcakeCrafts.etsy.com.she also paints funny portraits of chubby

animals; these paintings are available at TeaPartyAnimals.etsy.com.

editor’s CORNER

Birthdays are cause for celebration and a reminder of how quickly our kiddos grow (are they really 8?). It seems like just yesterday when we were marveling over the day they were born. Birthday parties

can bring those memories full circle, while creating new ones to be talked about for years to come. So, regardless of whether you’re celebrating your child’s first birthday or eleventh, it’s time to party!

Once a year we compile a list of every resource imaginable to help you plan the perfect birthday party for your kids. This year is no exception; and it’s truly our pleasure to publish a birthday party guide to assist you in preparing for whatever kind of shin dig you’d like to throw. In the 2012-13 guide we are focusing on mobile birthday parties, simple and meaningful home parties, and we include some great resources on where to party; if not at your house. Is your kiddo into bugs? How about books? Maybe they’re a burgeoning chef and they want to invite their friends to try a cooking class for their birthday. Or do you have a crafty kid who would like to make their own invitations? Whatever the case, we’re here to help you get started.

We’ve also provided you with information on where to pick up supplies like invitations, cakes and other treats to make for a special day. And don’t miss the list of entertainers who really know how to get the party started. As always, we love hearing from you. Do you have a birthday party memory or idea you’d like to share? Let us know on our facebook page, facebook.com/nwkids and visit our website, nwkidsmagazine.com for more tips on how to celebrate.

milk + Bookies™although Milk + bookies are not a mobile themed birthday party, what they offer for this year’s festivity is something truly unique. according to M+b their main goal combines two essential and worthwhile efforts: literacy promotion and service learning. M+b will help you with the email-able invitations, and guests, in lieu of gifts for your child, will bring a new hardcover picture book for donation. You can also order a “bookies box” filled with “i donated” stickers and bookmarks. You can create a storybook theme for your party, so that the kids can truly embrace their love of reading and imagination. This year’s party will allow your children and their guests the appreciation of giving while still having a remarkable time.milkandbookies.org

birthday

For some, planning their kids’ birthday parties might be stressful, especially when the party location is at home. There is preparation and decisions to make when planning a home party, but if done simply they can be sweet and a lot of fun. Some of the best birthday parties we’ve been to this year have been low-key home parties, ones that didn’t break the bank, and seemed relatively stress-free. These unstructured parties have us thinking about our kiddos’ next birthdays and how we might create a simple and meaningful party.

By low-key celebrations we mean no organized entertainment. What? No entertainment? Don’t get us wrong, there are many birthday years where having someone bring the party, a structured activity, music, juggling and a bouncy house are crucial, hence why we list them in the birthday guide, but there are other years where simplicity can be equally wonderful, necessary for the pocketbook, and can create some pretty special memories. Not every birthday party needs to top the previous year’s party by making it bigger and more extravagant (our humble opinion).

Factors that effect decision making about how to plan an at home party might include your child’s age, what month their birthday falls, their personality, how much they would like to be involved in the planning, and budget. You might limit the number of guests to the age your child is turning; fourth birthday equals four kids. We’ve attended parties where kids played the entire time and the birthday cake and song were the only structured break. We’ve also been to parties where a craft was made available to the kids if they felt like participating. Almost all of the children sat for a moment to glitter glue guitars and crowns (everyone was royalty at the party, not just the birthday kiddo) and then they were off for more free play with their friends. All of the parties we’re talking about were thrown for children under five years old and during the warmer weather months when the kids had free reign outside, so if your child’s birthday falls during the winter months and you feel like your house can’t handle a gaggle of children rampaging through it, the home party option may not be for you. But if you can keep the party small and the chaos in check, it can be a great time.

Birthday traditions can also be a big part of the home party. For example, if you make pancake breakfast every year as part of your child’s celebration, why not have a pajama party where attendees bring a favorite topping as their gift? Other fun ideas might include picking a theme central to one of your kids’ interests other than media related icons like a favorite sport, food or location. Or a special birthday story can be told in a circle where friends can also share a memory or funny aside about your kiddo. You can always plan a classic party game (see sidebar) as your one structured activity or offer a project that kids can complete and take home with them as their party favor, and skip the goody bags altogether.

CheCk ouTThere are quite a few resources to help

you plan your simple party, but really a lack of planning is just fine and is kind of the point. Let things happen organically and you’ll be surprised by what can happen. A few books we’ve found helpful for simple and meaningful celebration include All Year Round or The Birthday Book by Anne Druitt and Naturally Fun Parties for Kids by Anni Daulter with Heather Fontenot. If you can get your hands on any of them you should find some inspiration.

Sweet Celebrations

WhAT You NEED:

Watercolor paper, tissue paper, blank •card stockMasking tape and scissors•Colored pencils or crayons•Watercolor paint and paint brush•Watered down white glue•sugar crystals•

WhAT To Do:

1Watercolor paper should be cut to size of the blank card stock. Cut tissue papers into squares and circles. The squares will

be the base of the cake and the circles will be the cake tops. Tape down edges of watercolor paper to a flat work surface.

2Use colored pencils or crayons to draw a line that represents the tabletop and create a decorative background on the

watercolor paper.

3Watercolor the table background using whatever colors you like. Use plenty of water when painting, because the tissue

paper shapes you cut out, will adhere to your painting better. Let dry.

4brush watered down white glue over the entire surface of the painting. This will secure cakes and seal the watercolor

paper with a slight gloss. sprinkle sugar crystals over the top. Let dry.

5Pull the masking tape borders gently away from watercolor paper, and as-semble the cards. send invitations to all

your friends and let the celebrating begin. also, makes great thank you notes.

books

naTurally fun parTies for kids by anni daulter (Pb $18.95)

From heart-shaped cherry-strawberry pie pops to sea shell art, Daulter’s beautiful book will give you oodles of birthday

inspiration, as well as tips for seasonal parties with which to wow family and friends year round. Host your own upcycle art party, complete with a homespun rainbow crayon craft, second-hand sweater pillows, and fancy grilled cheese sand-wiches with apple butter. For winter try a Knight’s Quest party. Stage your own theatrics and slurp up Dragon Soup, a snack sure to be a smash hit among budding medievalists. Tnah & Marino di Donato’s friendly and informative accompany-ing photographs will get the healthy hearty party started.

The perfeCT presenT by Fiona Robertson (HC $16.99)

A hilarious and heartwarm-ing book about the hazards of gift giving and the resilience of friendship. Sometimes sweet thought can get shuffled out

of sight in the hustle-bustle of birthdays. Henry’s duck friend Spot has picked out the perfect fish-ing gear to warm Henry’s heart, but a big huge woofing box with AIR HOLES is hogging all the attention. Feeling under-appreciated Spot speeds off into a thunderstorm and gets stuck in a tree! Will Henry and his slobbery new birthday pres-ent be able to pull off a rescue mission and make peace with the dissed duck?! Kooky and cartoony, with tiny chapters that feel very grown-up.

moomin and The BirThday BuTTon by Tove jansson (HC $12.99)

Snufkin, Snorkmaiden, and Little My are all too busy bustling about to help Moomin celebrate his birth-

day, or to admire the golden button Moomin-mamma contributed to his collection. Moomin feels so snubbed he bursts into birthday tears. The big day can often be a bonkers and bumpy time. He and Moominmamma get their minds off the blues by decorating Moomin’s tipsy three-tiered berry cake until he hears a chorus of birthday callers hollering in the yard. “Moom-introll, come outside! Come and look what we’ve got!” What Moomin’s buds were bustling over was a breathtaking home-made treasure trunk, all wrapped in seaweed! Moomin and his birthday are as unforgettable as ever! If this is the first you’ve heard of Jansson, you’ve got so many treats ahead of you! Rush out for all the chapter books and the sidesplitting and smart comics series as well.

a BirThday for CoW by jan Thomas (HC $12.95)

A great and goofy birthday book for beginning readers. Pig and Mouse are baking Cow the best birthday cake ever, but

all duck can do is obsess about TURNIPS! Duck wants turnips in the cake, on the cake, mixing the cake, and keeping the cake company at the party, which Pig and Mouse think is all wrong, and maybe even ruinous. Luckily Duck sneaks his surprise onto the scene at the last minute. It turns out Cow loves nothing better on a birthday than...TURNIPS! A great reminder that it’s possible to party in all kinds of wacky ways.
