Are you working toward your professional certification? If so, we offer courses to meet your plan requirements. NWESD professional development offerings are aligned with the Professional Certification Standards (where appropriate) and each course will list the number of the Standards that apply.

News Flash

While many classrooms are emptying quickly at the conclusion of a school day, Mr. Jamie Yoos is usually still surrounded by students. In the last few years, Jamie has worked toward an “Appropriate Technology Integration for the 21st Century Learner”, using cell phones and mobile devices to enhance the learning process in his classroom. Instead of tell-ing his students to unplug during class, students are encouraged to utilize their “toys” as tools for deeper understanding. The method is engaging his students beyond the classroom, and helped Jamie receive the Wash-ington State Teacher of the Year Award for 2010.

According to Jamie, his greatest educational accomplishment is the “de-velopment of a safe, standards based chemistry program that is steeped in inquiry”. Taking a different spin on traditional education grading systems, Jamie is adamant that students need to know that being wrong is ok. “We have to be wrong most of the time in our process of explor-ing the natural world before we can be right,” he says. “Students must be allowed to be wrong initially without a devastating affect to their ego or grade.” To remind himself of the frustrations often associated with new experiences, Jamie learns a new skill every year - one that he has viewed as challenging or potentially scary in the past. This allows him to keep a balanced perspective as he assists students struggling to understand the new concepts presented in his class.

Jamie is not just being recognized as an amazing chemistry teacher, he is also a strong mentor for his colleagues and works with aspiring teachers from Western Washington University. Jamie has been elected by the state as an E2T2 Technology Mentor and works with fellow teachers regu-larly to assist them with incorporating technology in their classrooms. In working with interns from Western, he not only offers himself as a re-source, he invites feedback and criticism from them as well. “Reflection is an essential piece for personal improvement in the field of education,” he says.

“Mr. Yoos is one of the most outstanding educators I have seen in my 25 years in the profession,” said Bellingham High School Principal Steve Clarke, a theme that echoes loudly among the colleagues and students working with him.

It is hard to believe we have al-ready begun a new calendar year! 2009 brought us challenges, no doubt, but it also gave us the op-portunity to think creatively and the inspiration to reprioritize many aspects of how we live and work.

Typically educators return from winter break refreshed and reju-venated, ready to get back into our work—making a difference in the education and lives of every student. While I am certain this year is no different, it will likely be frustrating to hear about the legis-lature’s challenges later this month, requiring significant reductions due to the economic recession. When I find myself frustrated by discussions that seem to focus on everything but making a difference for students—I take time to visit classrooms and refocus. I encour-age all of us to maintain a focus on what matters in these challenging times— students and their learn-ing. You are making a significant difference in the lives of students and their families. Thank you!!

Recognizing the challenges school districts are facing and in the spirit of thinking outside-the-box, I am pleased to share that the NWESD has recently retired all debt related to the Anacortes Facility – more than six years ahead of schedule! The Superintendents’ Executive

Committee and the Board are very excited about this decision; primar-ily because of the benefits we are now able to pass on to member districts.

With “mortgage payments” no longer pending, member district fees related to the facility “cost center” account will be reduced by 45%, retroactively applied begin-ning last August. This means that member districts will not only have reduced fees moving forward, but the NWESD will also be returning funds over the next few months through offsetting fee credits. With the economy still sputtering as a result of the recent recession, there is no better time to provide relief to our school districts.

You might be wondering how the NWESD was able to repay this debt so far ahead of schedule. The necessary funds were grown over the past several years, primarily through 1) the reduced cost of the

Anacortes facility compared to the projected cost of the addition for which the original bonds were sold, 2) six years of rental income for a wing within the facility, 3) indi-rect fees charged some significant grants, and 4) effective cost con-tainment/management. The entire NWESD team is to be commended for making this possible, provid-ing even more efficient services to member districts!

Moving forward, we will be ap-proaching the Superintendents’ Advisory Committee (SAC) for advice related to specific services the NWESD might provide with a significant portion of its remain-ing reserve. The NWESD Board believes that it is time to make use of all available resources to support member districts as they face these economic challenges.

Addressing Challenging Behaviors in School Age Children with Autism Using Positive Behavior SupportEvent ID: 14026

In this workshop, participants will learn a variety of proactive positive behavior support strategies to prevent challenging behaviors. They will learn why it is impor-tant to identify the function of a challenging behavior before implementing an interven-tion plan. They will learn how to identify appropriate replacement behaviors and how to teach them. Finally, they will learn strategies to facilitate a team approach to inappropriate behaviors, helping to ensure the success of a behavior intervention plan. Even though it is popular to use visuals with individuals diagnosed with autism spec-trum disorders, not all visuals are the same and not all pictures work the same way. By knowing the developmental levels of visuals, materials can be arranged to better meet the needs of students. This workshop will ex-plain the language levels of visual supports that are typically used when working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Language, social, and cognitive develop-mental levels for different kinds of visuals will be provided and analyzed.

Deep Alignment Reading Training Event ID: 14901

Target audience: K-12 educators. Deep Alignment is much different than a topical or “first glance” type of alignment. Deep Alignment refers to the congruence of the content, context, and cognitive demands present in the written, taught, and tested curriculum. Spicing Up Math, Science and Language Arts with Art Event ID: 14900

Designed for the elementary classroom teacher, this course will provide creative ways to engage students in math, science, and writing. Participants will examine art as discipline-specific by expanding art vocabulary and concepts, will explore mul-tiple ways to infuse and integrate art into other subjects , will use prints by master artists to create prompts for writing and will explore observation and inquiry. This course will aid participants of all skill and confidence levels find ways to use art in the all classrooms and gain understanding the value of teaching the arts to children living in poverty. Time will be allocated to review Art EALRs and the Washington Classroom-Based Performance Assessments (CBPA) in Visual Art.

Using Science Notebooks to Uncover Student UnderstandingEvent ID: 14849

This class is designed for teachers that are currently using science notebooks. Partici-pants will deepen their understanding of the nature and purpose of science notebook entry types. They will learn strategies to examine student notebook entry types for evidence of misconceptions or gaps in their understanding. They will begin to discuss instructional implications based on analysis of their own students’ work.

Vocabulary Instruction: Teaching Vocabulary to Enhance Instruction Event ID: 14392

Vocabulary plays a critical role in learning to read and supporting comprehension. Readers should be explicitly taught new vocabulary words within the context of their reading. In this class participants will learn how to select tier two words, define words quickly while reading, and interact with and use new words after reading. Video clips and planning time will assist teachers in applying these strategies to their own teach-ing.
