ExecutiveSummaryPurposeofthesurveyForseveralyears,theboardofWNYCBShasbeendiscussingtheideaofformingaNYAssociation.MostIBAssociationsthatstartedasmulti-stateassociationshavenowevolvedintosinglestateassociationsasthenumberofIBschoolsinthosestateshasincreased.Thetransitionfromamulti-stateassociationtoasinglestateoneseekstobetterserveitsconstituentdistricts,headsofschool,IBCoordinators,teachersandcounselorsthroughadvocacywiththeStateEducationDepartmentandtheIBO,throughtheofferingofregionalroundtablesandnetworkingopportunities,andthroughadditionalservicesonthelocallevelsuchasassistancewithsettingupExtendedEssaycampsatlocalcollegesanduniversities,supportforschoolsinvariousstagesofcandidacy,andincreasinguniversityrecognitionofIBcourseworkandthediploma.

InSeptember2015,anexploratorycommitteewasformedtoreviewthecomponentsoftheIBAssociationapplicationsecuredfromtheIBO.TheapplicationandpurposebehindexploringtheformationofaseparateNYIBAssociationwasdiscussedwithseveraltopIBofficialsaswellaswiththeGIBSboardattheirSeptember2015andJanuary2016meetings.ThepresidentofGIBSmadeanannouncementregardingWNYCBS’actionstowardsthisapplicationattheGIBSAnnualConferenceinJanuary2016.

Timelineofthesurvey• OnMay3rd,thetextofthesurveywassubmittedtotheheadoftheGIBSboard.

• OnMay17thand18th,thesurveylinkwassenttoallIBCoordinatorsandHeadsofSchoolincludedonthelistofNYAuthorizedSchoolprovidedtousfromIB.ItwasnecessarytosendoutthesurveyemailintwogroupsonseparatedaysduetothelargenumberofrecipientsandtherestrictionsthatGooglehasinplace.

• OnMay31st,afinalemailwassentouttoanyschoolsforwhichwedidnotyethaveasurveyresponselettingthemknowthesurveywouldclosethemorningofJune1st.

• OnJune1st,thesurveywasclosed.

ResultsofthesurveyResponses(99)werereceivedfromeveryregionofNYthatcontainsIBschools,althoughthenumberofresponsesfromeachregiondiffered.Someschoolsoptednottoidentifytheirschoolnameintheirresponses.Thevastmajority(78%)ofrespondentsarecurrentGIBSmembers.ResponseswerereceivedfromschoolsofferingeachIBprogram(PYP,MYP,DP,IBCP).91%ofrespondentsindicatedtheywouldsupportorenthusiasticallysupporttheformationofNYIBAssociation.Whenbrokendownbyregion,thistrendheldtrue–allindividualregionsrespondedwithsupportlevelsof90%orbetter.

ConcernssurroundingthecreationofaNYAssociationANYAssociationwouldfollowasimilarevolutionarypaththatmostotherstateassociationshavefollowed,havingfirstbeenpartofamulti-stateassociation.Recognizingthatthetransitiontofromamulti-state(GIBS)toasinglestate(NY)IBAssociationwillinvolvegrowingpains,surveyparticipantswereaskedtosharetheirconcernsandconstructivecriticismregardingtheestablishmentofaNYassociation.Theiruneditedresponsesarelistedbelowalphabetically.• Cannotthinkofanyasateacher.Coordinatorsmayhavemorespecificconcerns.

• Mytwomainconcernsarelistedabove,butI'vealsohadahardtimefindingoutaboutwhenroundtablesorlow-costworkshopsarebeingheldandwhatexactlyisoffered.Caseinpoint,despiterepeatedattemptslastspring,Ionlyfoundoutaboutaworkshopthatwasofferedsixweeksbeforethedateoftheworkshop.Icouldn'tsendateacherbecausehedidn'thaveenoughtimetoswitchhisplans.AndlikeI'vealreadymentioned,aNYAssociationshouldbehelpfultoallNYIBschools,andthelocationsofmeetingsandroundtablesshouldbemorecentralized.

• SincethisnewassociationisbeingstartedbyWNYCBS,wheredootherschoolsfitintotheassociation?Ithasbeendiscussedthatleaderswerealreadyelectedforthisnewassociation.Thisdoesnotallowforotherschoolleaderstogetinvolved.ItisapparentthatthisnewassociationhasastrongfocusontheDP.Forexample,theabovequestionaboutwhatserviceswouldyouliketoseeprovidedbyastateassociationmainlyfocusesonDPneeds.GIBShashelpedtobuildastrongsupportforMYPandPYPschools.HowaretheneedsofMYPandPYPschoolsbeingconsidered?Theorganizersofthisnewassociationneedtoreachouttomoreschoolsandleadersoftheseprograms.WeonlywanttobepartofanassociationthatsupportstheIBcontinuum.WecollaboratealotwithschoolsinNJ.WearenotsurewhatwillhappenwiththeseschoolsandiftheywillbeallowedtojointheNYIBAssociation.
