D.O.T. Project

Process

Results

1. Formed small teams2. Each team set a goal to collect 100 pledges (DOTs)3. Put a display up in the hallway showing our target and current amount4. Held weekly meetings to track progress

• Collected 500 DOTs

• Raised awareness about climate change and their action team

Green Roof

Results

• Decreased demands on cooling costs and lowered associated electricity costs

• Decreased storm-water runoff

• Increased air quality at school

1. Partnered with Sustainable South Bronx 2. Got an engineer to approve the site 3. Had an architect draw up the plan 4. Received permission from our facilities engineer 5. Received permission from the School Construction Authority 6. Ordered the modular trays and sedum 7. Spent 8 hrs unloading them from trucks and putting them on the roof!

Garlic Planting

Process

Results

1. Students built Raised beds2. Bought garlic3. Planted garlic

• Students planted 200 lobes of garlic

• ACE Action Team will give a head of garlic to every staff, take some home, and keep 15% to be planted again next year

• Students are participating in sustainable food production at school and learning about its benefits for the environmental and social health of the community.

School Composting

1. purchased a composting bin2. organized students to collect organic waste during their lunch period and transport it to the garden

• Food waste from cafeteria diverted and recycled• Organic compost created to be used on garden beds in the spring• Both methane and Co2 emissions reduced

Bamboo Bicycle

Process

Results

• Got in touch with Bamboo Bike Studio• Used ACE starter grant money for the bike building materials• 3 day process to build the bike, one day at the studio two at their school• 10 students participated

• Students gained hands on experience building a bike

• Learned more about about renewable resources and carbon-

free transportation

•They raised money for future projects
