    GSAS Application 2014Programs, Requirements, and Deadlines

    Please carefully read our application instructions for a complete description of all applicationrequirements and policies. The instructions are available in two places:

    Step 1. Instructionsin the online application

    All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit a complete application foradmission. In addition to the application form questions, a complete application includes academic transcripts, testscores, letters of recommendation, a rsum or curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose, and the application fee.

    APPLICATION DEADLINES

    All application materials must be received by5 p.m. eastern time on the deadline date. Deadline dates are providedfor each program in the section labeled Application Deadlines. If an application deadline falls on a Saturday,Sunday or legal U.S. holiday, then the next business day will be the deadline date.

    TEST SCORE REQUIREMENTS

    The Graduate School requires that applicants submit official test scores for the general test of the GraduateRecord Examination (GRE) unless an exception is specifically noted under program-specific requirements.

    The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants who are not native Englishspeakers (this requirement is waived if the applicant has completed a baccalaureate or masters degree at aninstitution where the language of instruction is English).

    The Graduate School requires official test scores for the GRE and TOEFL. Self-reported test scores and

    copies of test score reports from the GRE and TOEFL programs are notconsidered official. Official testscores must be sent to us directly from the GRE or TOEFL program; make sure they are sent to New YorkUniversityGSAS, code 2596. Refer to the application instructions for complete information about how toproperly submit official test scores to the Graduate School.

    The Graduate School requires that you apply by using the online application. (Certain applicants to non-degree

    programs are not able to use the online application. Refer toApplication Policiesin the Application ResourceCenter.)

    If a program recommends or requires a subject test of the GRE, it is specified in the section labeled GRE andTOEFL.

    If a program requires a writing sample, it is described. Please note that the writing sample is in addition tothepersonal statement that is a standard part of the application.

    If a program has any other special requirements, they will be listed.

    Applicants to dual degree programs(programs offered by GSAS and another school at NYU, such as theSchool of Law, Medicine, Business, or Public Service) must apply to each school separately. Admission to thedual degree program is contingent upon acceptance by both schools.

    Writing Sample (Ph.D. Applicants):A writing sample demonstrating academic work in social science is required. This would most likely be a papechapters of a thesis from your undergraduate career. It should be between 30 and 50 pages, double-spaced. It should demonstrate your ability tthink analytically about some social science question, and communicate clearly.

    Writing Sample (Masters Applicants):A writing sample is required. It could be a paper for an undergraduate class or a publication. It shoulddemonstrate the applicants ability to analyze a topic insightfully and it should be written in the English language. The paper should be double-spaced and not exceed 3,000 words. A good paper, well-written and with insight, will improve the chances of admission.

    Dual Degree Applicants:Dual degree applicants must also apply to the School of Law or the Stern School of Business.
