Watching the World athletic Championships last weekend set the scene for our athletics day today. OK, so it’s a little different but the endeavor and challenge is exactly the same.

Last weekend i saw the american decathlete, ashton Eaton, virtual-ly collapse, utterly exhausted after having given everything to break the world record. His elation and his sheer will and determination was inspiring. as he stumbled around to thank people, he was embraced by his fellow athletes, family and friends, who acknowledged the ab-solute sacrifice he had made to be the best he could be. For drama, excitement and real life, this was superior to any reality TV show.

Our fields today are a far cry from the Birds nest stadium in Bei-jing, but i saw some of that character to-day at our Sports day. This form of edu-cation is invaluable for our students and whether they par-ticipated for fun and just enjoyed running

around or they had set goals and wanted to compete, there was some-thing for everyone. The challenge is always there and it was great to see students overcoming barriers and doing their best for themselves and for their Houses.

Special thanks; to all of our staff, both local and international for their support today, especially the two organizing teams of teachers who ensured everything ran smoothly. To the parents who came along, i hope you were enthralled by our children’s efforts. Finally to our stu-dents from both campuses, congratulations to everyone for the cama-raderie, teamwork, focus and commitment on making this sports day one to remember.

Around the school this week.Week 6 has been a week of action around our Early years and Primary precincts. On Tuesday, at lunchtime, we had our NZiS idol auditions for our upper primary students. The finalists will be announced next week after our Lower Primary students have com-pleted their heats next Tuesday.

On Wednesday the Student Council held a special meeting with members of our Pa-rent Support Group, to put forward suggestions on what improvements they would like to suggest so that our school can be a better educational facility. Each class had discussed Questions 7-10 from the PSG survey at their class meeting. The Student Council reps then brought these suggestions to the PSG for discussion. Can we re-mind all parents that these surveys are now overdue. Please return them on Monday if you have not already done so. We hope you all take the time to put your ideas and suggestions down on paper so they may be considered in future planning.

Before lunchtime on Wednesday our year 5 & 6 students left to visit aiS Kemang where they competed against aiS in netball, with our a & B teams having practised for weeks to learn about the game and deve lop their skills. Thanks to Ms Michelle and Jodie Tamou for supporting our seniors in learning how to play the great game of netball. Each school scored a win, which was a positive outcome, considering many of our players are still learning the game!

Today our Early years have thoroughly enjoyed having the Primary campus to them-selves for WHEELS day! Many students brought in their own scooters, tricycles and cars to ride around a track on the BiG playground. a large Car BEd was also brought out for the students to drive, climb and play on. There was great excitement as some children raced their vehicle around the circuit.

Our annual athletics carnival was also held today at aiS Pejaten. This day is the culmi-nation of weeks of training and practice of various skills required to complete a range of tasks, both competitive and fun. The activities included Cross Country, Sprints and Shot Put, which are all medal events. The other events were the Gumboot race, Frisbee throwing competition and the Egg and Spoon race. Thanks to all the staff for their sup-port in planning and preparing the grounds, and to all the parents who came along to support their children. We will announce the winning house and medal recipients in an upcoming Friday assembly before the end of term.

Early Years joins Jump Jam with Primary Sector.

This weeks’ focus for Early Years is based

on the principle of Empowerment.

Children develop an enhanced sense of self-worth, identity, con fidence, and enjoyment as they reach the goals of well-being in a responsive, stable, safe environment which sup-ports the development of self-con-trol and self-esteem. The goals of this strand recognise the principle of Holistic development in promoting well-being through consistent, warm relationships which connect the var-ious aspects of the child’s world. The strand recognises that Family and Community are important in con-tributing significantly to children’s well-being. in the same way, the strand of well-being emphasises that through relationships, children develop trust that their needs will be responded to, and that trust contrib-utes to developing confidence and independence.

Week 5 was a busy and exciting one in year 5 Manaia.

Science Week and Science fair projects We had an eventful week of 2-3 science experiments

happening in the classroom every day. Hypotheses were created and tested. Experiments were carefully carried out and explanations written up to explain what scientific processes had occurred. Students were also busy preparing individual science fair projects which were then shared on Science Fair day. year 5 were very proud and confident when sharing their thought pro-voking and fascinating experiments with their parents and fellow students.

Our busy week in year 5 Manaia, ended with an exciting and edu cational excursion to 'dinosaur adven-tures' at Gandaria city. Here the very knowledgeable staff provided the students with a guided tour of the 25 life size 4d dinosaur models. The guides shared a vast amount of interesting and informa tive facts about these magnificent prehistoric creatures. The huge dinosaur models were very realistic and their sud-den movements and loud roars gave us all a scare or two. a fun filled morning was had by all!

This Wednesday, 2 teams of year 5 & 6 students played in-terschool Netball against some aiS students. The games were action packed, intense and exciting. NZiS students displayed perseverance, good communication skills and super teamwork. They came away from two very action packed games, with 1 win and 1 loss. Well done to all students who represented NZiS on these netball teams. Thank you to Ms. Jodie and Ms. denise for your coaching and umpiring skills over the last few weeks in prepara-tion for the games.

international day – a request has gone out to all parents asking for assistance with in-ternational day on the last day of this term, Wednesday September 23rd. if you, and or a group of friends, would like to assist by preparing an activity to present to students (around 15 minutes) then please com-plete the form that went out this week and send it in. This is an opportunity for our parents to showcase something from their home country and have our students learn and develop a greater awareness of the multi-cultural nature of our community at NZiS! This is also an opportunity for our parents to actively en-gage the students at NZiS in some creative and authentic learning. Mock examinationsThis week our senior students have been undertaking their mock exams. This is the practice run for their real exams in October and November.

They have been getting used to having multiple exams per day, completing questions under time con-straints, managing their own revision schedule and getting a feel for real exam situations in the official exam room.

This year’s mock exams have been designed to mimic the real exams as closely as possible. They are all being completed in the new exam room, under strict exam condition as laid out by Cambridge.

Checkpointsit has also been a big week for the year 6 and 9 students who have written their mock checkpoint exams. again they have been designed to mimic the real exams as closely as possible. Considering this is the first time either class has sat an examina-tion like this their conduct was exception-al. Well done everyone!

Five teD talks You should Watch Before taking your exams Ted talks are amazing presentations by experts in various fields. They’re also great ways to waste time but still learn something.

But did you know they can also help you with your exams? These five TEd talks are great ways to learn some last-minute skills and hone a healthy pre-test-day mentality…check them out!

1. andy PuddicombeAll it takes is 10 mindful minutesMeditation is a powerful tool in combatting stress, anxiety, and other everyday concerns. in this TEd talk, andy Puddicombe, who be-came a celibate monk, talks about the power of “ten mindful moments” of relaxation. Be-fore your exams, you’ll be sure to be a ball of stress and other annoying emotions. Learn to deal with them!

2. Maurice ashleyWorking backward to solve problemsdid you know that solving problems backward can actually be more effective at times? in this TEd talk, Maurice ashley, a chess grandmaster, shows us how he works his magic…and how you can take his mentality to make your every-day life easier. This can work wonders on cer-tain exam problems!

SecoNDarY STANDARDS!

3. Joshua FoerFeats of memory anyone can doThis TEd talk is amazing. Joshua Foer, a sci-ence writer, talks about how you can commit amazing feats of memory. What better place to use this technique than when studying for the exams? a large portion of some exams is memorisation…and a large part of school, too, unfortunately. This technique will prove helpful to you whenever you have a lot of in-formation to retain!

4. kelly McgonigalHow to make stress your friendStress doesn’t have to be your enemy. in fact, thinking this way can be detrimental to your health.

5. arthur BenjaminA performance of “mathemagic”Here’s one for people struggling with com-pleting the math sections on time. arthur Benjamin is an amazing mathematician who can compute numbers and solve problems with dazzling speed. and you can do it, too. This is about as entertaining as math will ever get. Unless you’re one of those people who enjoys math. in which case…
