Examination Music Entrants may not use photocopies for performance (other than for facilitating page turns) in examinations, as this is prohibited by the Copyright Act. When Entrants enter the examination room they must hand copies of all list pieces being performed, to the examiner, together with their examination slip. Copies for examiner use of extra repertoire list pieces in the Performance syllabuses are optional. Please note that where pieces are listed in the Syllabus, the publishers are given mainly as an aid to locating material, and are merely suggestions; other authoritative editions of the music will be equally acceptable. Memory Work It is recommended that from the earliest grades entrants should be encouraged to perform the chosen songs from memory. With the exception of Oratorio/Cantata, memorisation of all Grade 8 and diploma programmes is required. Keys Except in the case of arias from Opera and Oratorio, songs may be transposed to any suitable key. Extra repertoire list: Samples of entrant’s work for the year From Grades 1 to Grade 7 all entrants must present other songs of their choice, as evidence of study beyond those presented for the examination. These should be at a similar level to those already in the syllabus, and may come from the syllabus or from a source other than the lists below. Examiners, at their discretion, will ask entrants to demonstrate familiarity with these songs by performing the whole or any part of them during the examination. Entrants must bring a copy of the music to the examination room. The following minimum requirements apply: Grades 1 to 7 - one extra study song Accompaniments for pieces Entrants must provide their own accompanists who remain in the room only while accompanying. A teacher may act as accompanist. A chordal accompaniment may be added where none is in place, unless item is to be performed unaccompanied. Technical Work Technical Work is progressive throughout the grades. Metronome markings should be used as an approximation, a reasonable proximity to these markings will be acceptable. Scales, arpeggios and exercises may be transposed to suit the range of the entrant’s voice. Entrants must select a starting note and that note or a chord will be played before each scale, arpeggio or exercise. Where no syllable is specified, entrants must be prepared to sing on any of the vowel sounds. For Level One and Two entrants, vowels may be preceded by a consonant. At Level Three and above, except where otherwise specified, vowels may not be preceded by a consonant. All printed technical exercises for the grade, need to be learnt unaccompanied and ready for presentation during the examination. Examiners may, at their discretion, choose to hear only a selection of these. Teachers are encouraged to use all exercises in all Grades as a sequential vocal development tool, while concentrating on the exercises for the particular Grade for which the entrant is entered. The unaccompanied folk song is a constant in Preliminary to Grade 2 as it allows personal choice to suit entrants’ strengths, and is an excellent tool for assessing pitch, diction and communication skills. Unless otherwise stated, all exercises should be practiced on all vowels. For Grades 3 to 8 the entrant must present, along with the compulsory scales and exercises, one of the vocal studies or an unaccompanied folk song as listed for the grade. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) has been used to indicate vowels and consonants on which to sing the exercises. Exercises and Scales are ways of keeping the voice fit and flexible. Technical exercises give entrants the vocal tools to sing songs with enjoyment and confidence, which helps the audience to enjoy the singing too. Level 2 - Grades 4 and 5

Descriptors

Processes are moderate in range, established and familiar, employing basic operational skills using readily available information. These areapplied in directed activities which are supervised by the teacher. Learners have some responsibility for quantity and quality.

Criteria

Examiners will use these criteria in assessing all level 2 entrants.

• Comfortable and well balanced stance• Appropriate posture• Technical facility, sufficient to allow:

• Further development of clear formation of vowels and articulation of consonants• Further development of management of breath flow• Accurate performance from memory of all technical work• Accurate and fluent performance of songs• Further development of awareness of underlying pulse in the songs• Further development of the ability to sing in the range mp - f without forcing the tone• Developing awareness of appropriate style and phrasing• Awareness of the expressive interpretation of music and text

At this level we encourage the use of the original language of texts.

Grade 4

1. Scales and Exercises• These are compulsory and will be performed A capella, beginning on a note of the entrant’s choice• The use of the syllable ‘vra’ encourages a forward tongue placement.• The melodic minor scale, both ascending and descending, is introduced slowly giving entrants time to think about what notes they are

singing. This encourages aural acuity.• Two short phrases, one major and one minor are introduced but with different words to each.

1. Scales and Exercises

Exercises and scales are ways of keeping the voice fit and flexible. Technical exercises give entrants the vocal tools to sing songs with enjoymentand confidence and that helps an audience to enjoy the singing also.

1. AGILITY - agility exercises will help to train the voice to move quickly and neatly from one note to the next. Singing with agility fromthe top of the scale down to the lowest note is an excellent way to begin the daily practice or to start the singing lesson. The scale can besung to any vowel - e.g. a or i or u or O, and putting an “L” in front of the vowel encourages the tongue tip to stay flexible and agile too.The letter “D” can also be helpful in this way. “D” is an excellent consonant for using only the tongue tip without tightening the wholetongue. Experiment with these suggestions to find which give the best results.

              86 mf = 80

2. STACCATO - the staccato way of singing or playing is another way of keeping the tone light and short, but not breathy. The entrant shouldaim for a focused tone in the staccato note which is accurate but unforced as the voice and breath meet each other neatly without being“pushed”. Use thought to prepare the pitch accurately before the sound is made. Practise this slowly at the beginning, and speed up withproficiency.

       mp 44

 = 104

3. ARPEGGIO EXERCISES - these too, are good exercises for the development of rapid and accurate movement of the voice. Whencombined with the major and minor scale, the entrant is working for skill in their ability to change the pitch of the major third into a minorthird with correct tuning.

        = 104

   44 mp

4. THE NINE NOTE SCALE: ascending and descending - This scale is to be sung with the enjoyment and musical feeling it deserves. Theninth note is a peak in the music and the singing voice must stay consistent while reaching the peak then descending to the lowest pitch. The breath is a source of energy and it must be managed with care through each note. If the chin juts forward, or the tongue becomestense, the breath energy will be interrupted and the vocal tone will suffer. It would be a good idea to practise this exercise slowly at firstuntil all the suggestions can be managed.

         mp 44

 = 104

5. MESSA DI VOCE: the line of the voice - This is an exercise which will train the voice to respond to the commands of thought. Start bythinking of the vowel ‘a’ and how it feels inside the mouth, then start singing a quiet but focused sound and swelling it to a strong, vibrantand unforced one. Now gradually return to the quiet dynamic level. Don’t change the shape of the ‘a’ sound from the beginning to theend.

6. THE MELODIC MINOR - This minor scale will already be known. This should be sung with thought and enjoyment to demonstrateconfidence in knowing the place of each note as the entrant sings upwards with a focused and even tone.

Level 3 - Grade 6

Descriptors

Processes require a range of developing skills within a range of familiar contexts. These are applied using relevant theoretical knowledge, interpretative skills, discretion and judgment within a range of known responses to familiar problems. Although activities are directed by theteacher, learners have significant responsibility for the quantity and quality of output.

Criteria

Examiners will use these criteria in assessing all level 3 entrants.

• Comfortable and well balanced stance• Appropriate posture• Technical facility, sufficient to allow:

• Clear definition of vowels and articulation of consonants• Management of airflow• Accurate performance from memory of all technical work• Awareness of underlying pulse in the songs• Accurate and fluent performance of songs• Awareness and demonstration of dynamics, and tempi• Awareness of tonal clarity and a clean onset and release• Developing awareness of staccato and legato• Awareness of the expressive relationship between music and text• A developing sense of appropriate phrasing, style and ornamentation

It is expected that Italian, German and French repertoire will be sung in the original language.

Grade 6

1. Scales and Exercises

Technical exercises play an important part in the study of music performance. By practising and achieving the vocal techniques of the exercises, the voice will become stronger, flexible and wider in range. However, remember that the technical exercises are not just a collection of notesbut are also music! This means that they must be sung as a musical performance to make them enjoyable and fully achievable. Knowing whateach exercise is for, and carrying that thought over into songs is very important.

1. THE TEN NOTE SCALE - This scale should be sung with even and steady sound. Enjoy the ascending scale with a sense of excitementas it goes beyond the usual eight notes to the peak. Energy from the breath will carry the voice without having to reach up for high notes, and therefore feeling strain in mouth, throat or tongue. Entrant must be careful not to jut out chin or lift shoulders during the upwardscale.

            mf 89

 = 80

2. THE TEN NOTE SCALE IN HARMONIC MINOR MODE - this is a challenge because of the technique needed to sing an upward scaleand also the tonality of the harmonic minor. Slow practise is the method needed to master both challenges.

          mf 89

24

3. THE CHROMATIC SCALE - this scale has twelve notes with no whole tones, only semi-tones between the pitches. When learning thisscale and working out the best way of singing it well, it helps to think of the intervals between each note as being large steps on the wayup and as smaller steps on the way down.

          44 = 104mf

4. EXTENDED ARPEGGIO WITH CHANGING TONALITY BETWEEN MAJOR AND MINOR MODES - The entrant should study thisexercise with care because of the challenges it holds. Be very careful about intonation which demonstrates knowledge of the major andminor keys and the ability to sing each with confidence.

              mp

 86 = 44

   f

5. AGILITY - the strong rhythmical impulse in this exercise must be maintained with evenness within the triplet figure. Take care that thefirst note of each triplet arrives exactly on the beat of the bar for which it is intended. Careful not to allow the exciting rhythm to pull youoff the beat. The use of a metronome to reinforce the beat will prove useful for this. Notice that the pattern of the triplet figure changeson the descending half of the scale. There is an intonation challenge in singing the ascending thirds to make sure that the interval is wideenough between them and then narrowed with the notes descending in a stepwise pattern.

Level 4 - Grades 7, 8 and Performers Certificate

Descriptors

Processes require a wide range of technical skills involving a considerable choice of procedures in a variety of familiar and un-familiar contexts. The learning demands a broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts and analytical interpretation of information. Thelearning demand requires informed judgment within a range of innovative responses to concrete but often unfamiliar problems. Learners havecomplete responsibility for the quantity and quality of output under broad guidance and evaluation from their teacher.

Criteria

Examiners will use these criteria in assessing all level 4 entrants.

In addition to those criteria at level 1, 2, & 3 the entrants will demonstrate:

• Accurate and fluent performance• Further development of intonation and consistency of pitch showing a well developed aural awareness.• Further development of formation of vowels and articulation of consonants• Developing rhythmic stability and vitality• Aiming for clear and even tone throughout the range• Developing ability to control dynamics as specified• Developing management of a range of tonal qualities for expressive purposes• Developing a confident projection of the style and character of chosen works• Developing expressive interpretation of music and text.• Italian, German and French repertoire should be sung in the original language showing an understanding of the pronunciation, translation

and emphasis on important words in the text.

Grade 7

1. Scales and Exercises

Grade seven is an advanced level. It is important for the entrant to read the criteria in the syllabus very thoroughly to prepare for the standardswhich will be expected at the examination. They challenge vocal technique and musicianship. The criteria covers both grades seven and eight inLevel Four. The entrants in Grade Seven will be expected to perform the technical exercises and repertoire at a satisfactory level of proficiencyto achieve a successful outcome in the examination.

The development of vocal technique is an essential component for singing performance as it enables the singer to do justice to their chosenselections and to safeguard the health and stamina of the singing voice.

Repertoire should be carefully chosen, making sure that selections are not beyond the entrants present state of vocal development. Songs andarias which entrants are not yet ready to sing, no matter how much they want to include them in their performance which are beyond theirpresent ability, may result in a disappointing or discouraging outcome. This is a lesson to learn early in their performance life. Note and followthe speed marking in each exercise.

1. THE EXTENDED SCALE: the eleven note scale - this is well beyond the normal diatonic scale. The advice given in earlier grades aboutthe posture of head and neck when passing through the scale towards the higher pitches is very important. Jutting the chin, tighteningthe jaw, or reaching for the high pitches will make the singing of the scale difficult and also affect your tone in an unhealthy manner.Increasing the energy in breath flow is the only extra effort needed to keep the steady line of tone going throughout the transitions of pitch.Allow the position of the head to remain stable, although the position of the jaw will adjust as the pitch rises.

Grade 8

1. Scales and Exercises

Technical exercises are fundamental to singing training as they prepare the singer for the challenges of the complex vocal repertoire they areto perform. By becoming familiar with the co-ordinations of singing in the technical exercises, and by practising and repeating them underthe guidance of a knowledgeable teacher, it is hoped that the singer will learn the skills and stamina of healthy vocal technique. Although theexercises are the foundation of vocal technique, they are also music, and by singing them with enjoyment and commitment, the entrant willincrease the enhancement of their voice and their performing experience.

The criteria in the syllabus for level four state the vocal and musical standards which entrants are expected to demonstrate in their work. Theseare the criteria for both grades seven and eight; but grade eight entrants are expected to demonstrate a level of competency even higher thanthe grade seven level of satisfactory. To achieve a pass grade within this level, the examination entrant must have good competency. Exercisesmust be sung at the dynamic and tempo markings given on the page.

1. THE EXTENDED SCALE - the ascending and descending major scale in compound time: this scale must be sung rhythmically withaccurate intonation, and the vocal technique to achieve an even tone throughout the register changes.

              mf

 812 = 88

2. THE EXTENDED SCALE:a. The ascending and descending melodic minor of the scale

b. The harmonic minor of the scale

                mf

  812 = 88

When you can sing these three versions of the scale with consistent tone and accurate intonation, you will have achieved a great deal ofknowledge and skill. It is well worth the effort.

3. THE CHROMATIC SCALE: ascending and descending - take notice of the minim rest before beginning the downward scale. This allowstime to prepare the breath and the voice.

5. MESSA DI VOCE: the line of the voice - in sustained tones with a changing dynamic of pianissimo through to forte and back to pianissimoin a diatonic scale. The entrant must demonstrate an ability to follow these markings without forcing of the higher dynamic or losing vocalfocus in the soft tones.

Singing

In compiling this syllabus the New Zealand Music Examinations Board has endeavoured to use readily available and affordable editions asindicated in the text. The Board has used each book to the fullest extent possible, however any edition is acceptable. Editions are mentionedsolely as a means of identification, and any standard edition will be accepted.

New Zealand music is available from SOUNZ, the Centre for New Zealand Music, Level 1, 39 Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, 6001.Tel04-801 8602, Fax 04-801 8604, [email protected]

NZMEB gratefully acknowledges the technical expertise and advice so generously donated by Judy Bellingham, Flora Edwards and DavidGriffiths in compiling these syllabuses.

Examination Music

Entrants may not use photocopies for performance (other than for facilitating page turns) in examinations, as this is prohibited by the CopyrightAct. When Entrants enter the examination room they must hand copies of all list pieces being performed, to the examiner, together with theirexamination slip. Copies for examiner use of extra repertoire list pieces in the Performance syllabuses are optional.

Please note that where pieces are listed in the Syllabus, the publishers are given mainly as an aid to locating material, and are merely suggestions;other authoritative editions of the music will be equally acceptable.

Memory Work

It is recommended that from the earliest grades entrants should be encouraged to perform the chosen songs from memory. With the exceptionof Oratorio/Cantata, memorisation of all Grade 8 and Performers Certificate programmes is required.

Keys

Except in the case of arias from Opera and Oratorio, songs may be transposed to any suitable key.

Accompaniments for pieces

Entrants must provide their own accompanists who remain in the room only while accompanying. A teacher may act as accompanist. A chordalaccompaniment may be added where none is in place, unless item is to be performed unaccompanied.

Co-Requisites

There are no additional theory requirements for this syllabus

Technical Work

Technical Work is progressive throughout the grades. Metronome markings should be used as an approximation, a reasonable proximity tothese markings will be acceptable. Scales, arpeggios and exercises may be transposed to suit the range of the entrant’s voice.

Entrants must select a starting note and that note or a chord will be played before each scale, arpeggio or exercise. Where no syllable isspecified, entrants must be prepared to sing on any of the vowel sounds. For Level One and Two entrants, vowels may be preceded by aconsonant. At Level Three and above, except where otherwise specified, vowels may not be preceded by a consonant. All printed technicalexercises for the grade, need to be learnt unaccompanied and ready for presentation during the examination. Examiners may, at their discretion, choose to hear only a selection of these.

Teachers are encouraged to use all exercises in all Grades as a sequential vocal development tool, while concentrating on the exercises for theparticular Grade for which the entrant is entered.

The unaccompanied folk song is a constant in Preliminary to Grade 2 as it allows personal choice to suit entrants’ strengths, and is an excellenttool for assessing pitch, diction and communication skills. Unless otherwise stated, all exercises should be practiced on all vowels.

For Grades 3 to 8 the entrant must present, along with the compulsory scales and exercises, one of the vocal studies or an unaccompanied folksong as listed for the grade.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) has been used to indicate vowels and consonants on which to sing the exercises.

Exercises and Scales are ways of keeping the voice fit and flexible. Technical exercises give entrants the vocal tools to sing songs withenjoyment and confidence, which helps the audience to enjoy the singing too.

Syllabus Repertoire

Entrants must perform three works two of which must be selected from the prescribed NZMEB list(s). One alternative “own choice” work maybe substituted and should be at a similar level to those already in the syllabus. No more than one composition by a specific composer may be presented during the examination.Entrants from Grade 1 to Grade 8 must take different styles and tempi into consideration when choosing their programme. It is recommended that Entrants from Grades 1 to 8 include pieces from at least two different style periods in their programme.

Grade 4

1. Scales and Exercises• These are compulsory and will be performed A capella, beginning on a note of the entrant’s choice• Major scales are now sung with different rhythms. The dotted rhythm encourages the entrant to actually sing the short notes.• The use of the syllable ‘vra’ encourages a forward tongue placement.• The melodic minor scale, both ascending and descending, is introduced slowly giving entrants time to think about what notes they are

singing. This encourages aural acuity.• The minor Arpeggio is reinforced.

Grade 5

3. THE MELODIC MINOR - This minor scale will already be known. This should be sung with thought and enjoyment to demonstrateconfidence in knowing the place of each note as the entrant sings upwards with a focused and even tone.

Level 3 - Grade 6DescriptorsProcesses require a range of developing skills within a range of familiar contexts. These are applied using relevant theoretical knowledge, interpretative skills, discretion and judgment within a range of known responses to familiar problems. Although activities are directed by theteacher, learners have significant responsibility for the quantity and quality of output.

CriteriaExaminers will use these criteria in assessing all level 3 entrants.

Grade 61. Scales and ExercisesTechnical exercises play an important part in the study of music performance.

Slow practise is the method needed to master both challenges.

          mf 89

 = 80

3. THE CHROMATIC SCALE - this scale has twelve notes with no whole tones, only semi-tones between the pitches. When learning thisscale and working out the best way of singing it well, it helps to think of the intervals between each note as being large steps on the wayup and as smaller steps on the way down.
