Are there any further comments from collated area meeting minutes with EC responses? Canterbury:

Response to the query about student membership support via a magazine etc.: Could an electronic newsletter be utilised to engage students directly? This could be posted through social media to keep costs to a minimum.

Response from EC: This is a good query and is something that we will look into

Professional complaints cannot go through a workplace if the complaint is for a private therapist. What course of action can parents take to complain about a private therapist? Further clarification re process needed please. Should they be using the Health and Disability forums? Could we add a link to the Health Info website?

Response from EC: NZSTA can take ethical complaints but not professional

Note: Members to inform us if you know of other members in your area who are not getting emails from area reps.

NZSTA Vision, Values and Mission

You should have all received your Vision, values and Mission statement with your copy of Communication Matters. This is the document that will guide NZSTA over the next five years. Please take some time to become familiar and let us know what you think. Canterbury:

Overall, like the card format. Felt it was a useful conversation starter with clients. One SLT had used it with an adult client already to explain what an slt does.

Query where budget for this came from. Annette R. responded that it was $700 which was budgeted for already. Did go through a free consultation process but not out to members for consultation. Transparency is important to the exec.

Central: It was noted by a member that in the mission statement it says "..... an international leader in culturally responsiveness" should that have been "cultural responsiveness"? Also the error in the first blurb with the "s" in "swallowing" being the line above. Northland: Members thought these looked good and were pleased that feedback had been taken on board. Otago Southland: members liked the look of the statement that came with Communication Matters, however would like to know what the symbols/visuals represent?

Awareness Week 2016

Speech-Language Therapy Awareness week is coming up the week of 4-10 September. The theme for this year will be the launch of an annual campaign based on Giving Voice in the UK

We are needing people who are passionate about the profession and our clients to become giving voice champions. If you are interested in being part of the campaigning getting involved contact Annette Rotherham NZSTA Communications [[email protected]] Please take some time to think about how you might be able to get involved in your areas. Canterbury:

Discussed the Royal College ‘Giving Voice’ campaign. We may be called ‘Giving Voice Aotearoa’. Wanting more outcomes than just the one week.

Promoting skillset and more funded positions. Redeveloping website so there will be a dedicated page. Google ‘Giving Voice UK’ or Royal College website to see an example.

Otago/Southland: Bridget McArthur has already put her name forward for this and commented that there is a good Giving Voice Facebook page.

International Communication Project

A reminder that Amy Oughton is now the project lead for NZ so people can contact her [email protected] if they are interested in being involved. Remember also to keep your ideas developing for The ICP NZ Video Competition. This involves putting together a video, no longer than 3 minutes long (design and execution completely up to you) which highlights “What communication means to me…”.

This is a serious competition with prizes for the top 3 videos nationally which will be shown at the awards night at the NZSTA Conference this year. All videos created will be streamed throughout the conference. This competition allows you to come together, get creative with your colleagues, peers, friends, families and patients/clients and inspire fellow New Zealanders and others worldwide to follow suit and raise awareness. Further details with where to send your completed videos will be sent out via your area representatives by June so stayed tuned. Let the creative planning begin!’.

Canterbury: Could there be a student category for an award? If so University students could then do videos as part of set assessments already in place for community education.

EC response to query: There is no specific student award

Professional development

a. Spend some time discussing recent professional development events people have been to, discussing a professional development topic of interest to the group, or listening to a guest speaker. (Please only list the persons name, topic and e-mail contact address in the minutes) b. Please also ask about Prospective PD events that members are aware of. Please then add these to calendar on the Website. If any one wants to advertise these more fully – please direct them to the PD Advertising Policy and contact the Office. Auckland: AAC: Fern Maxwell and Magnus Hammarsal discussed CAT L1 accreditation available for SLTs in order to assess for less complex communication systems. [email protected] / [email protected]

Open Forum

This provides a time for members to share websites, articles and resources of interest or to discuss any issues facing them professionally. Waikato Fiona Hewerdine: CPD Log difficulties-two staff members at Tauranga Hospital are having difficulty accessing their CPD logs-have been informed that they are unable to log anything until 2017. They are both full members. Annabelle to investigate with EC on their behalf. Response from EC: There do seem to be intermittent issues from different computers/operating systems. We are in the process of changing our webhost and

website, so please bear with us while this transition takes place. We hope these types of issues will be resolved. Central: Megan Pickering asked if any SLTs in DHBs are providing dysphagia assessment and intervention to patients in rest homes. Brigid Fay responded saying the Palmerston North was 1) because the rest home is the patients home, and 2) because there is no other alternative. Ashleigh Cave asked if anyone was doing dysphagia training for the RMO’s (i.e. nurse dysphagia screens) as she had been approached by a consultant to do so. Brigid Fay responded to this by saying that Palmerston North hasn’t but that some DHBs have done so, and suggested that Ashleigh should take them up on the offer as it get SLT out there and can help bridge the gap between consultants and SLTs Kylie Willoughby asked if anyone had any experience using the Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) for AAC. Emma Cooke responded that Alex Templin has used it and can be reached at [email protected] Ashleigh Cave asked if anyone knew of any basic paediatric dysphagia courses available at the moment or coming up. A member suggested the one on the NZSTA website which is for basic paediatric dysphagia and is about 3 hours. Kylie Willoughby asked if anyone had any experience using boardmkaer online. Elisa Mynen responded that she had and found it very useful – albeit slow sometimes. Otago/Southland: Southland members have recently purchased a book titled “ Conversation Train” for children with autism – highly recommend. Question for Exec: Are NZSTA still adopting UK’s Communicating Quality. If so, how are we able to get a copy of this? Response from EC: Thank you for this question, the EC had a good discussion around this with the following outcome. Communicating Quality 2 is now defunct and the new Communicating Quality content has change significantly making it no longer fit the NZ environment. NZSTA now has our own Scope of Practice and we no longer require to piggyback from another association such as RCSLT as we have enough documents and our expert advisors to manage our own profession.

What websites of interest or links to resources do members have to share with their colleagues? (please ask members to give a brief summary of the website or resource as well as the link/web address). Auckland : members reported that they would like soft copies of communication matters as a way to reduce cost, hard copies can then be ordered if required. Canterbury:

Princess Margaret Hospital Christchurch is closing. 1st of June there will be a morning tea for colleagues and x-colleagues. Louise Hughes to do a write up for Comm Matters. [email protected]

App: Trip Cards

NZ sign week Wellington: Resource Room - It is not going away. There is $10, 000 funding grant to help this develop. Request from Face to face team to develop meetings to be more valuable for members in the area. I (Claire) are looking at ways to develop this in the area. Some members have previously mentioned discussion of articles and or being willing to lead a discussion. This will be followed up on. Shannon Henig Shared the following article I have encountered a bit of outdated thinking in the general community (not SLTs) recently. People telling students "no movie talk" and setting goals towards getting rid of echolalia etc. If this is something you are also seeing, here are some resources I have found useful:

Stiegler, L. N. (2015). Examining the Echolalia Literature: Where Do Speech-Language Pathologists Stand?. American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, 24(4), 750-762. (ATTACHED)

http://www.communicationdevelopmentcenter.com/articles.html Northland: Christine - wondering about language development in small children, and education for parents on how to talk with small children. IHC Library (https://www.ihc.org.nz/library) has a great range of books available on different conditions, and now also has e-books. Altogether Autism NZ (http://www.altogetherautism.org.nz/) provides free information searches for people on the autism spectrum, to parents, educators, support workers, or professionals working with adults or children on the autism spectrum.

Other Matters for Exec

Please provide member name and contact details (if member consents) so that a member of the EC can follow-up directly and gather any further information to ensure that the member’s request, question or issue is appropriately & accurately responded to. What other questions would members in your area like to ask of the Exec? Northland: Nicola Burger: Has there have been any further developments around formal training for SLT assistants since the position paper came out in 2008? Response from EC: Check out the Career force website – this has information for training for assistants. NZSTA specifically has not been involved in any further training around this. The Position Paper is due for review. Otago/Southland: How is the ‘random’ CPD log audit determined? One member has been chosen two years in a row. It would also be beneficial for those who have been audited to receive specific feedback on their CPD log. Response from EC: Members should only be selected again if they have not met the criteria for the previous year. If you have been selected twice in a row but have met the requirements, please contact the office for an exemption. People whose logs were complete generally did not receive any commented feedback as it wasn’t deemed required, specific feedback was only provided to those whose logs were incomplete.
