O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord

Unto us is born a Saviour - Christ the Lord. This is good news of great joy. The candle we light today is the candle of Joy, reminding us of the Joy our Saviour brings through life everlasting.

Matthew 1:21, “You shall call his name Jesus, for it is He who will save his people from their sins.”

Each of us has distinguishing characteristics that make us unique. People identify us by our traits. These are our special features. They separate us from all the other people in the world who have names like ours. It may be our laugh. Possibly it is our smile. Or it could be the things we find funny, our expressions, or the sound of our voice.

These traits are fixed in their memories: our hobbies, our temperament, and our relationship with them. The sum of these things and so many more conjure up the images that others recall when they hear our names.

When the name Jesus is mentioned, what is the singular outstanding characteristic that most people connect with His name? Without a doubt, it is His love. No one has ever loved us like Jesus. Unlike our love, His love was not intimidated by pain. We avoid pain and discomfort. And – rightfully so! He did not avoid it. Instead, He chose it. His love is powerful.

In another world, Jesus was ever so safe. There was no death. No suffering. No pain. No sorrow. No rejection or betrayal. He was wanted. The words, powerful, cherished and safe could describe His heavenly home.

Yet He stepped out of His safe home and came into our hazardous world. Why? So that someday, we could leave our world and live in His safe home. He gives us the power to live forever. He gives us the joy of eternal life. He walked on our planet in the skin of a man.

He understands what we feel and think when we come to Him in prayer. He faced many of the things that we face here on earth.

The angel said, “You shall call his name Jesus.” Could an angel understand what that name would come to mean to us? Is it possible that a pile of sins and human hurts causes us to see the power in His love that the angel could not fully appreciate?

Calling His name brings wonder. It brings praise. It brings hope. Jesus. Wonderful name. Wonderful Saviour. Wonderful love. Jesus – the Christ. Jesus, who demonstrated his love to us, by giving us the joy of eternal life, with him in heaven.

Matthew 2:1-11

Visitors from the East

1Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,

during the reign of King Herod. About that

time some wise men from eastern lands

arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2“Where is the

newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star

as it rose, and we have come to worship

him.” 3King Herod was deeply disturbed

when he heard this, as was everyone in

Jerusalem.

4He called a meeting of the leading priests

and teachers of religious law and asked,

“Where is the Messiah supposed to be

born?”

5“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said, “for this

is what the prophet wrote:

6‘And you, O Bethlehem in the land of

Judah, are not least among the ruling

cities of Judah, for a ruler will come

from you who will be the shepherd for

my people Israel.’”

Matthew 2:1-11

7Then Herod called for a private meeting

with the wise men, and he learned from

them the time when the star first appeared. 8Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and

search carefully for the child. And when you

find him, come back and tell me so that I can

go and worship him, too!”

Matthew 2:1-11

9After this interview the wise men went their

way. And the star they had seen in the east

guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of

them and stopped over the place where the

child was. 10When they saw the star, they

were filled with joy! 11They entered the

house and saw the child with his mother,

Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped

him. Then they opened their treasure chests

and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense,

and myrrh.

Philippians 2:5-11

5You must have the same attitude that

Christ Jesus had.

6Though he was God, he did not think of

equality with God as something to cling to.

7Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;

he took the humble position of a slave and

was born as a human being.

When he appeared in human form, 8he

humbled himself in obedience to God and

died a criminal’s death on a cross.

9Therefore, God elevated him to the place

of highest honor and gave him the name

above all other names, 10that at the name

of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven

and on earth and under the earth, 11and

every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is

Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:5-11

1. From Heaven you came, helpless babe Entered our world, your glory veiled

Not to be served, but to serve And give your life that we might live.
