Electrical power distribution for Oil & Gas applications

Greater challenges...Oil and gas companies must meet the challenges arising from greater demand

for resources that are more difcult to access and extract. The heavy investmentsrequired must be returned faster. This requires state-of-the-art technology basedon international know-how as well as extremely reliable and high-performanceequipment.

...and consequent changesFor electrical distribution systems in the oil and gas industry, this means far-reaching changes that call for new solutions.

Complex international projectsThe high investments lead to a joining of operational forces. Project organizationbecomes more complex with international partners providing a vast array ofdifferent competencies.Engineering rms, contractors and oil companies want a partner with solidexperience in this eld who can provide proactive support both locally and globallyfrom the beginning to end of the project.

Know-how and experienceContinuity of service in electrical installations is vital to the protability of heavyinvestments in oil and gas production. Experience in electrical engineering andtechnical know-how are essential to work out the optimum solution among the manyalternatives. The electrical partner must have the means to carry out the necessary studies onsystem architecture and on the operating dependability and reliability of networks. It must also have in-depth knowledge of local and international standards given the

ever increasing importance of safety and environmental considerations.

Enhanced performance and reliability of equipmentThe stringent specications for installations mean that performance levels must behigh. The equipment must be standardized, but offer all the features required tooptimize costs and energy availability. The trends below are now commonly observed.b Increasing power levels , with more and more electrical motors, particularly for MVapplications. Sites up to 100 MW are now common and others can reach 700 MWb Increasing voltage levels , with MV distribution now prevalent, where 3.3 kV isoften replaced by 11 kVb High currents up to 4000 Ab High short-circuit currents, often 50 kA at 11 kVb Reductions in size and weight, made necessary by the constraints weighingon oating installations (offshore, FPSO, etc.) and the cost of shelters for onshore

installationsb More intelligent switchboards to facilitate integration in electrical monitoring andcontrol systems (EMCS)

Other electrical network studiesb Harmonics: control electrical pollution.

b Overvoltages and insulation coordination: guarantee equipment dielectricstrength is respected according to expected overvoltage levels (permanentor temporary overvoltages or surges due to switching or lightning strikes).

b Dependability: guarantee the availability of electric power to increase thereliability of installations adapted to the application.

b Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC): design installations that are fullyprotected against electromagnetic disturbances.

Schneider Electric global serviceThe work carried out for this project included:b Load ow and voltage prole studiesv Sizing of equipment (cables, lines, transformers) according to the installed powerv Calculation of voltage drops over the various linksv Positioning of power transformer tap changersb Short-circuit current calculationsv Maximum short-circuit current values (device sizing)v Minimum short-circuit current values (protection settings)b Protection studyv Choice of protection devicesv Determination of settings according to the various operating modesb Dynamic stability studyv Determination of maximum fault clearing times enabling motors reaccelerationv Impact of high power (7 MW) motor starting on voltage levelsv Impact of voltage drops due to the upstream network (220kV)v

Design of a load shedding plan

Detail of design servicesCalculation of short-circuit currentsThese calculations are achieved using network modeling as dened in IEC 60909.They enable the maximum and minimum short-circuit currents (symmetric andasymmetric) to be determined for phase to phase and phase to ground faults. These calculations are essential for checking:b Making and breaking capacity of interrupting devicesb Electrodynamic withstand of equipment (switchboards, busbars, etc.)b Thermal withstand of grounding devicesb Site grounding characteristicsb Protection settingsProtection studyThis study enables the type of protection to be determined (over current, directional, differential relays, etc.) by taking into consideration the various technical andeconomic criteria of the oil process. Protection settings are dened according to:b Short-circuit currents of the different operating modesb Transformer switching currentsb Motor starting or re-energizing currentsb etc.

Dynamic stability studyThe main objective of a network dynamic study for this type of installation is toestimate the behaviour of high power asynchronous motors should an electricalincident occur. For example, a phase to phase fault in the installation creates a voltage drop andthe slowing of motors of substations close to the faulty feeder. If protection settingtimes are too long, the motors will slow too much to ensure that all loads can be fullybrought up to speed once the fault has been cleared.

Pre-determined load shedding will allow priority loads to be rescued. Furthermore, for this installation, the study enabled network behaviour to be checked should theautomatic transfer system (ATS) installed in the main substation, operate. In the event of a fault on one of the 220kV/30kV transformers, the ATS ensuresbusbar changeover in less than 500ms. The simulation carried out enabled systemstability and the re-energizing of high power motors to be validated.
