Holiday greetings from Michael I. Levine, National President

Chanukah is the story of the triumph of light over darkness,of love over hate.

Each year, we forge a new link in our chain of existence thatdates back many thousands of years. Just as we know thata chain is only as strong as its weakest link, we also knowthat each one of us is reinforcing this link, this year, this

day, this moment and every moment of our life, through our support of each other.

The activities of Magen David Adom help to forge an unbreakable link forour time, by saving lives and mitigating the suffering of human beings inIsrael and around the world. Truly a gift of life and hope. Yet hope alone is not enough. Nothing can happen without the generosity of you,our donors.

Our skilled and dedicated team across Canada will continue to encourageand motivate you into action, the action of giving – supplying essentialmedical equipment and medical supplies, ambulances, the finest pre-hospital medical services in the world, and blood for the entire Stateof Israel.

Israel cannot survive without Magen David Adom. Magen David Adomcannot survive without you.

Thank you, Canada, for 41 years of love and support of Magen David Adom.

Michael I. Levine, National President

Les activités de Magen David Adom aident à forger un maillon incassablepour notre époque, en sauvant des vies et en soulageant la souffranced’êtres humains en Israël et à travers le monde. 2017 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGCONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The keynote speaker at the welcome dinner Saturday eveningwas Father John Walsh who spokeon racism. Musical entertainmentwas provided by Cantor Daniel Benlolo and Yo Aisenstark on keyboard. Special guests included MDA paramedics, Itzik Goldfarb and Itay Weiss.

The very powerful Magen DavidAdom video, “Naor’s Story”, wasshown and left everyone in awe of

the speed with which MDA para-medics perform their emergencylifesaving duties.

Sunday began with a morning-longworkshop led by Debbie Dankoff,Senior Philanthropic Advisor, McGillUniversity, and Susan Reid, Directorof Bequest and Planned Giving atMcGill University. The purpose ofthe workshop was to identify various traits of Canadian MagenDavid Adom, using SWOT analysis– strengths, weaknesses, opportu-nities and threats -- in the contextof the Board’s mission with respectto philanthropy.

The projected outcome of the work-shop is to set up a process to de-velop a CMDA three to five-yearfundraising strategic plan.

Following a break for lunch, the afternoon session included reportsfrom Michael Levine, President, Sidney Benizri, National ExecutiveDirector, Joseph Amzallag, Chair-

man of the 2017 Nominating Com-mittee, and chapter presidents.

Everyone agreed that a great deal was accomplished but there is a lot

more work to be done. CanadianMagen David Adom is a “brand”that we should all be proud of and promote.

Canadian Magen David Adom salutes Jon Dlusy who has generouslydonated a Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) to the people of Israel inmemory of his brother, Nathan Dlusy, and in memory of his parents,Regina and Israel Dlusy, who fled Nazi Germany.

In a moving and poignant dedication ceremony with family and friends,Jon, who was the younger brother, explained that Nathan, an RCAFFlight Sergeant, was killed during active service in 1944 at the age of23. “This is a fitting gesture because Nathan, who had spoken of hisintention to visit Israel, would have been so proud.”

“I am grateful that I have been able to honor and do justice to my fam-ily’s memories and, at the same time, provide Israel with the essentialmedical equipment needed to save lives,” said Jon Dlusy.

“I lost a lifelong friend in Octoberwhen Yudke Grossman passedaway,” wrote Bernard Mendel-man. Yudke grew up in Montrealand, in his teens, the YMHA onMount Royal became his secondhome. He attended Baron ByngHigh School and received a degree in economics from McGill University.

In 1953 Yudke left Montreal to livein Israel at Kibbutz Galon and, in1964, he married Nurit who hadalso made aliyah.

Yudke will best be remembered inMontreal for his efforts to bringteens to visit Israel through a va-riety of programs he establishedas a Jewish Agency emissary. Hewas also instrumental in creating

semester-abroad programs withvarious universities.

Although their home base was(and for Nurit, still is) Kibbutz

Galon, family and friends drewthem back to Montreal for visits.A stop at Canadian Magen DavidAdom’s (CMDA) office in DecarieSquare was always included intheir itinerary.

Nurit and Yudke were honored bytheir family, friends, and CMDAin August, 2009, with the dedica-tion and presentation of a MobileIntensive Care Unit to the peopleof Israel. Now stationed in Sderot, the MICU continues to enable firstresponders to fulfill their missionof saving lives.

Yudke’s legacy and love of Israelwill never be forgotten by all whowere fortunate to know him andcall him “friend”.

Winnipeg Chapter Telethon volunteers hard at work.

Practice makes perfect and, in the case of the WinnipegChapter, this seems to be the case. Their annual telethon, heldat the beginning of November, was well organized. Thanks tothe efforts of the determined volunteers, an impressive amountwas raised for Canadian Magen David Adom.

Yasher koach to all who participated.

(From a story by Myron Love, Jewish Post & News)

Daniel Amzallag, CMDA’s National Mediaand Volunteer Coordinator, recently introduced Winnipeggers to the workof Magen Davd Adom at a presentationat the Rady Jewish Community Centre.

“Magen David Adom Israel is the world’smost efficient medical service when itcomes to responding to serious situa-tions,” said Daniel.

“In Israel, it takes the first responderon average less than a minute to reachthe scene of an incident with the ambulance arriving in less than eightminutes. In Canada, the average timeis 32 minutes.”

Surprising to most was how Daniel defined mass casualty incidents. ”It isn’t the number of deaths andinjuries that cause a situation to be labeled a mass casualty incidentbut rather whether or not there are enough ambulances, suppliesand medical personnel to handle the situation,” he said.

“It is not only in Israel that Magen David Adom saves lives and trainspeople in first aid,” continued Daniel. “MDA goes into action world-wide when called upon and also trains first responders in a numberof countries.

“It is a great feeling not only to be able to save lives but also toteach others how to save lives.”

In celebration of its 12th Anniversary, the Calgary Chapter of Canadian Magen David Adom hosted an evening at the CalgaryJewish Film Festival with the presentation of the film, “BetweenWorlds”. Prior to the showing of the film, CMDA National Execu-tive Director, Sidney Benizri, and CMDA National Media and Volunteer Coordinator, Daniel Amzallag, each brought greetings.

Sidney was pleased to be back in Calgary and to have the opportunity to meet donors and talk about the lifesaving workMagen David Adom is doing. Daniel discussed the importanceof the Physicians’ Missions to Israel, the objective being to prepare doctors to return to Israel in case of a Mass Casualty Incident.

Dr. James Cohen, who was a member of the 2016 Mission, saidhow honored he was to have had the opportunity to participateand volunteer on an MDA ambulance.

Sidney thanked the co-chairs, Nava and Sam Wainer, and Dr. James Cohen for their hard work in arranging this evening.

The third successful Physicians’ Mission to Israel took place in November. Led by Daniel Amzallag, CMDA’s National Media andVolunteer Coordinator, doctors from across Canada travelled toIsrael to take part in a week-long intensive learning experience withMagen David Adom paramedics and first responders.

Carolyne Elbaz always had a passion for medicine and, in thesummer of 2010, travelled to Israel to volunteer in MDA’s YochaiPorat MDA Overseas Program. “I can easily say it was the bestsummer of my life,” she said.

Carolyne, now a hematology fellow from Montreal, took the opportunityto participate in the Mission and described her experience.

“On November 16, 2017, I flew to Israel with physicians of variousspecialties. The training was unlike anything I have ever beenexposed to. The reality of paramedics and first responders is verydifferent from the Canadian reality. Our exposure to field medicine,ACLS (Advance Cardiac Life Support), PHTLS (Pre-Hospital TraumaLife Support), working on MDA's MICU (Mobile Intensive Care Unit),as well as our contacts with leaders in the field were all veryinspiring. The instructors and guest speakers made us feel welcomeand took the time to convey their love for their country and their life-saving mission by teaching and showing us around different placesin Israel.”

She continued, “It gave me the opportunity to see Israel from adifferent perspective, a side I have never had the opportunity to seebefore. Travelling with doctors of various backgrounds made it par-ticularly interesting and fun. Combining previous experiences withnew skills allowed the group to bond quickly, especially duringstressful drills.”

Carolyne’s feelingsare shared by allthose who have par-ticipated in thisunique program.

Canadian Magen David Adom gratefully acknowledges the following supporters for their generous donations towards medical equipment received in honor of the Cote Saint-Luc Men’s Club “Evening of Entertainment” June 27,2017.

The London Chapter ofCanadian Magen David Adom

has been invited to join LondonJewish organizations in

participating in the creation of atime capsule.

Part of the Canadian Jewish Experience:

A Tribute to Canada 150,it is an opportunity for each

organization to submit a piece of memorabilia,

something that is emblematic ofeach organization’s mission

and purpose.

Amongst the items that themembers of the LondonChapter have chosen to

include is a “mini scooter”,together with a brief

explanation about the object and how it related

to CMDA.

The capsule will be stored for 150 months ( just over

12 years) and will provide achance to look back in time.

LONDON

A CommunityTime Capsule

London Chapter Chair, NaomiSheinbaum, places CMDA items

in community time capsule.

Send us your list – We will do the rest!
