ONE WEEK WORKSHOP ON RESEARCH METHODS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES

FOR RESEARCH SCHOLARS AND FACULTY MEMBERS (22ND -27TH NOV. 2021)

NEED OF THE WORKSHOP

There are more than 800 Universities in India with large number of departments of social sciences.

While universities are the centers of teaching and research, there are many government research

institutes, autonomous research organizations who are doing social science research as well. India has

the highest volume of research in south Asia, and is significantly ahead of other countries in the region.

But there is wide disparity in research activity and output across the countries, both in terms of

quantity and quality. Outside of South-Asia, the number and quality of social science researchers in

India are lesser than that of Japan and China. We are far behind the developed nations both in Social

Science and Pure sciences research, output and patents.

In the higher education and research in India, there have been growing concerns among the

academicians about the quality of research in social sciences. The research documents lack proper

research methodologies. There is a dearth of knowledge about the processes and crucial steps of

research. Neither the researcher has an understanding of conceptualizing the research problems nor

do they have skill of developing hypotheses or setting objectives. Even students with doctoral degree

are not able to do proper literature review. They are almost indifferent and uninterested in primary

field works and depending more on secondary sources of data. The wide variety of social science

disciplines and the diversity of their nature make the identification and implementations of a research

method both complex and problematic and therefore calls for training and knowledge adaption. The

research quality can be enhanced through the adoption of appropriate research methodology by the

social scientists and researchers. It is particularly important in the light of the facts that social scientists

have lost some of its appeal and attraction as a preferred career in Higher Education and research

studies. It calls for adoption and application of rigorous research methodology in the higher education.

This requires more familiarity with the nuances and philosophical understanding of research and

application of ICT and related softwares for improvement in the quality of research at the higher level.

The application of quantitative techniques helps to get better research results and supports in analysis

and interpretation. Besides, the uses of effective writing skill assist in better presentation of the

research results. Within this background the proposed workshop aims to inculcate the commitment

and temperament for research among the participants.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

“To develop skill in the participants and enable them to apply appropriate research

methods in their research work”

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

➢ To orient the participants about significance of social science research in the field of

academia.

➢ To familiarize them with philosophical and theoretical dimensions of the social sciences

in general and research in particular.

➢ To apprise the participants with different types of data (offline/online) sources, ways

and reference software in social science research along with means of accessing them.

➢ To deliberate on the aspects of searching research theme, identifying research gap,

formulating research questions and objectives, developing questionnaire.

➢ To familiarize the participants with sampling techniques, survey methods and applying

them in their research.

➢ To develop the skill of data processing and the use of suitable statistical techniques in

their research.

➢ To deliberate on bestowing final shape of research output in the form of research

report/thesis/monograph/citing references/research ethics etc.
