CYUNDER HEAD REMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY

If dcsired, the head can be removed and the valves 1l'[;rol1nd without removing the engine from the tractor; t() remove the cylinder head, ,proceed as follows:

I. Drain the radiator and engine water jackct.

Disconncct the gas tank front strap.

). Disconncct the air clcaner pipe support and remon: thc air cleaner pipe. Remove the exhaust pipe.

i. Rcmo':e the hood.

). Disconnect the spark plug lead wires at the spark plugs and remO\·e the bracket which holds them to the cylindcr head.

(l. Rcmovc thc two cap scrcws that hold thc watcr outlet manifold to the radiator.

Rcmove the water pump oil line.

S. Disconnect the carburetor linkage. Be careful to keep the two small C-451 washers with the link. If thc carburetor is not to be disasscmbled, it can be left attached to the manifold assembly.

<). Remove the manifold stud nuts and clamps and remO\·e the manifold assembly.

10. Clcan all loosc material from around thc cvlinder head cO\"er and remove the cover. .

I 1. Remove the vah-c rocker shaft oil tube assembly at the rear of the head. Remove the rocker arm stud nuts and lift the entire rocker arm assembly from the hcad.

12. ReIllo\-c the ,"ahe push rods.

13. Remove the cylinder head stud nuts including those that hold the water outlet manifold. Remove the water outlet manifold. Using a suitable hoist and the hoisting eye bolt shown in Figure 2-1, lift the cylinder head from the engine. (See Figure 2-5.)

14. Usc a vah"e spring compressor to depress the valve springs and reI11o\-c the valve retainers and vah"es. (See Figure 2-6.) Place the valves in a numbered rack so that each vah-c may be returned to its proper guide. (See Figure 2-7.)

s. Remove the shaft assembly. Remove the weights and weight carrier if necessary.

9. Remove-the cap screw which clamps the governor fork onto the governor fork shaft in the housing. (See Figiire 3-9.)

10. Remove the snap pins from the governor fork shaft. Slide the governor fork on the shaft until the woodruff key can be removed and slide the shaft out of the housing.

11. Remove the governor shaft rear bearing from the housing and remove the oil seal. (See Figure 3-9.)

VARIABLE SPEED GOVERNOR OVERHAUL INSPECTION AND REP AIR Replace all parts which are excessively worn or dam

aged. If the bearings are rough or have a tendency to bind, r~place them. If the thrust bearing does not run freely, replace the thrust bearing and spool as an assembly.

If the clearance between the governor fork shaft bushing and the shaft exceeds .OOS", replace the bushing in the housing. The outside diameter of the shaft, when new, is .5605" to .5625". If the shaft outside diameter

Figure 3-9-Go'Vernor Housing

is less than .557", replace the shaft. The proper clearance, when both the bushing and the shaft are new, is .00 I" to .004". Replace the oil seal in the governor housing with a new seal. If the weights are replaced, be sure they move freely on the carrier, as any tendency for them to bind will disturb the proper operation of the governor.

VARIABLE SPEED GOVERNOR ASSEMBLY 1. Place anew oil seal in the governor rear hOllsing

and install the rear bearing. 2. Install the governor fork shaft by sliding it into the

housing and through the governor fork. Place a woodruff key in the shaft and match the keyway in the governor fork with the key. Position the governor fork at the center of the housing and tighten the cap screw which cIaw.,R~ it to the shaft. Install the snap pins in the groov~,provided.

3. Assemble the governor shaft with the weight carrier and weights and insert it through the forward housing. Install the forward bearing on the shaft. Press the forward bearing into the housing and install the bearing cap. Install the magneto-governor drive gear on the shaft with a woodruff key. Check the governor weights and be sure that they move freely without binding.

PULLEY CARRIER OVERHAUL

Make a thorough inspection of the gears, bcarings, shafts and splines, and the bushing in the pulley drivc gcar. Rcplace all parts which arc damaged or excessively worn. Chcck the teeth of the bevel gears for nicks, chipping, scoring or excessive wear. If the be,·el gears arc worn or damaged, they should be replaced as a matched sct. The bevel gears are furnished as a matched set under the part No. CSR-669-A. Replacement of one of the bcvel gears without replacing the other gear in the set is not recommended as propcr adjustment of thc gears cannot be made unless they are properly matched.

Check the teeth of the pulley drive gear carefully and replace the gear if the teeth show indications of damage or excessive wear. Check the bushing in thc pulley drive gear and if it is scored or otherwise damagcd, replace it with a new bushing. After the new bushing is installed, it must be honed or reamed to an inside diametd· of 1.7495"-1.7505" or to gi,·e a running clearance between the bushing and the pulley drivc shaft of .0025" to .0045".

Check the jaws of the jaw clutch and if any are cracked or damaged, replace the damaged part.

Replace the power lift worm if it is worn or damagcd in any way.

If the splines of any of the shafts arc excessi,·ely worn or damaged caused by a working action, replace the damaged shaft. Check the internal splines of the pulley shaft coupling and be sure they are in good condition.

Check the bearings for roughness or binding and replace them if necessary. Check the pulley shaft bearing cups in the pulley shaft bearing cage and in the pulley carrier and replace them if they are worn, scored or otherwise damaged.

Check the pulley carrier and pulley carrier extension for cracks or other damage and replace them if they arc cracked or broken.

PULLEY CARRIER REASSEMBLY

1. Place a new oil seal in the pulley shaft extension bearing cap, place a new felt washer in the pulley carrier extension and install the pulley shaft extension in the pulley carrier extension. (See Figure 10-7.) Lubricate the bearing with pressure gun grease applied at the fitting.

2. Assemble the pulley shaft as shown in Figure 10-8. Place the woodruff key in the shaft before installing

the pulley drive bevel pl11lOn. Install the pinion and the bearing cones on thc shaft using a press and suitable drivers.

3. Assemble the pulley drive shaft as follows: (See Figure 10-9.)

a. Place the forward bearing on the drive bcvel gear and install the snap ring.

b. Place the drive bevel gear in the splines of the shaft and install the ~"asher and nut. Tighten the nut and peen the nut extension into thc notch on the shaft to lock the nut.

c. Place the pulley drive gear on the shaft and install the power lift worm with the woodruff key. On the Standard and Industrial "80" tractors, the worm is not used and in its place a longer spacer is installed to position the rear bearing.

d. If new bevel gears are being installed, note thc backlash etched on the pulley drive bevel gear.
