LABOUR DELIVERS €3 MILLION FORDUBLIN 17's 'PREPARING FOR LIFEPROGRAMME'The Labour Party is committed to tacklinginequality and disadvantage in our society. Thisis why between 2013 -14 over €30 millionwill be allocated to the Area Based Childhoodprogramme.
This scheme builds on previous commitmentsto the Prevention and Early InterventionProgramme that saw the creation of three areabased anti-poverty strategies.
Locally, the Preparing for Life Programme runby Northside Partnership received €3 millionin government funding for the Dublin 17 area.
These strategies aim to empower youngparents from early pregnancy to when their children are at school-going age with positiveinterventions focused on literacy, diet and language. They are based on international bestpractice and research and are proven to make a real difference in communities.
Aodhán said: “Both I and my colleague Alison Gilliland have worked hard with the Minister forPublic Expenditure and Reform to deliver this funding and we are delighted that we havesucceeded in delivering for the children that need it most.”
LAURENCE LANDS SURVEY Last year Labour Councillors on Dublin City Council blocked aproposal to sell the Laurence Lands off the Oscar TraynorRoad into private ownership. The Labour Party feel that theselands should be retained for the community. Local AreaRepresentative Alison Gilliland is currently compiling a surveyof residents living adjacent to these lands on what they feelthese lands should be used for. The results of the survey willbe delivered to the local Area Manager of Dublin City Council.Over 100 surveys have been completed so if you would liketo take part in the survey please visit Alison’s Facebook pagefor more details: Facebook.com/Gilliland.Alison1

Getting the Northside back to work has beenLabour's first priority over the last three years. We have hosted four local employmentroadshows in Kilmore, Donnycarney, Coolockand Donaghmede that have been attended byhundreds of people. We also held a youthunemployment forum in Coolock which wasaddressed by Dragons Den's Norah Casey. Weare connecting local people with the servicesthat can help them get through this phase intheir lives.
Representatives from FÁS, JobBridge, JobCare, Citizens Information, NALA, CDVEC,EmployAbility and Northside Partnership have all taken part to help empower people toget re-trained, up-skilled or back into the workforce.
Labour is the party of work. That is why:
In January the Live Register Dropped for the 19th Month in a row
Unemployment is down from a peak of 15.1% in February 2012 to 12.4% - its lowestlevel in five years.
In March 2011 7000 jobs a month were being lost, now 5000 jobs a month are beingcreated.
Between 2008 and 2011 250,000 jobs were lost - 61,000 jobs were created in the lastyear.

FREE GP CARE FOR ALL CHILDREN AGED 5 ANDUNDER - LABOUR DELIVERS AGAINFree GP care for all children under the age of six is a major achievement for Labour in government.
Announced in Budget 2014, the HSE Service Plan confirms that €37 million has been set aside topay for the service. Very soon, the parents of over 420,000 children aged 5 and under, will no longerhave to check their wallets before picking up the phone to their doctor.
The government approved the General Scheme of the required legislation before Christmas. This setsout the blueprint of how it will work, and it is expected to be operational by the middle of this year.
This reform will ensure that families don’t have to worry about finding the extra money for GP feeswhen one of their children gets sick. It has long been the view of the Labour Party that no parentshould have to prioritise bills when their child needs medical care.
This major change is only the first phase of introducing free GP care to the entire population, and willmake a huge difference to hard pressed families.
LABOUR ESTABLISH'BEAUMONT HOSPITALFORUM'In recent months a number of controversialdevelopments relating to Beaumont Hospital havecaused concern for neighbouring residents:
The disgraceful construction of an elevatedroadway to the rear of Ardmore Drive
The proposed ring-road affecting BeaumontWoods and the regular helicopter landings in theestate
The on-going parking problems associated withthe hospital for residents in Kilmore West
As a result, the local Labour Party established a‘Beaumont Hospital Forum’ where residents meet ona regular basis to work on matters of local concern.
The forum has now met on a number of occasions andthe chairmanship has been passed on to a member ofthe community. Real politics is about servingcommunities and empowering them. This forum nowhas the opportunity to deliver real results for the localresidents.
NANIKEN FLOOD FORUMAs residents in Maryfield Crescent and other areas across theNorthside will be aware there has been an on-going issuelocally regarding flooding and the Naniken River.
The local Labour team have been working hard with affectedresidents in an attempt to get this issue resolved. Followingextensive lobbying, the City Council have established a FloodForum for the area to allow residents to engage with CityCouncil Officials.
I have also raised the issue in the Dáil on a number ofoccasions particularly surrounding the non-compliance ofInsurance Companies with residents affected.

ENDING SCHOOL HUNGERRecent research has shown that 13% of children in Ireland never have a weekday breakfast andthat 21% of children go to school or bed hungry every day. This has been a cause of hugeconcern to both of us.
Aodhán said: “Working together with the local team, I and my colleagues Alison Gilliland and Cllr.Brian McDowell raised this issue with Minister Burton.
On foot of our representations, the recent budget provided for an extra €2 million to the schoolmeals programme bringing the total spend to €37 million.”
This programme will benefit around 191,000 primary school student and will be availableacross 1,300 schools and groups in the current academic year including St Joseph's inBonnybrook.
Residents will recall the successfulcampaign run by the Labour Party andAodhán O Ríordáin TD to ensure thatthe local bus services 20B and 27Bwould continue to serve thiscommunity. The names of theseservices have changed, however theroutes retain their importance to thisside of the city.
While the adjusted service has takensome time to bed down, there havebeen some concerns outlined to usfrom local residents about theeffectiveness of the new routes.
Having been central to the campaign tosave these routes, Aodhán and AlisonGilliland will continue to defend theselocal services and ensure theirprotection into the future.

MARINO TEACHER ACCESSPROGRAMMEIn April 2013Aodhán workedclosely with theMarino Instituteof Education andNorthsidePartnership tohelp studentsattending DEIS schools improve their Irish Language skills.
At present Higher Level Gaeilge is a minimumrequirement for accessing teacher training colleges.Unfortunately this has proven to be a barrier in the pastfor students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This newscheme will aid over 20 young people from nineNorthside DEIS secondary schools in improving their Irishlanguage skills.
Aodhán says: 'I have to pay tribute to my colleague AlisonGilliland for advice and support in setting up the scheme.Alison’s experience as a teacher in Darndale was crucial inhelping me develop this programme in conjunction withthe Marino Institute and Northside Partnership.'
