CURRENTLY LEARNING
Lit /Comp - This week, we will review Reading Workshop norms & protocols and begin our read-aloud books: selected novels from April Henry, who will be visit ing PJHS this November!
Science - This week, students will engage in the Engineering Design Process with a Peppermint Racer Challenge. Students will also prove what they know about criteria and constraints with a quiz on Friday.
Algebra - Students will cont inue to analyze funct ions this week. Students will ident ify the domain and range of a funct ion. There will be an Ident ifying Funct ions Quiz on Wednesday (8/29).
Math 8 - Students will begin Unit 1 by solving two-step equations. Students can work on IXL W.6 and W.7.
Social Studies - This week we will cont inue Industrializat ion. We will do some of our first formative assessments over our Guiding Quest ions and will do a document-based analysis by looking at primary sources from the t ime period.
Language Arts - Students will begin the How Writers Work Unit . They will set goals based on their writ ing benchmark and will begin to look at how their interests can be used as inspirat ion for their writ ing.
Lit /Comp
This month, we will move from nonfiction Collaborative Reasoning to fiction, focusing on text structure and author 's craft in book clubs. Students will read a common book and come to meetings prepared to discuss what they've read. As always, students are expected to read their independent novel for 20 minutes each day!
Science
Students recent ly completed models of the Earth-moon-sun system to reflect the reasons for the lunar cycle, eclipses and seasons. This week we began our Natural Select ion Unit . In this unit we will observe traits of different populat ions and construct models and arguments for why traits of populat ions can change over t ime.
Algebra
In Algebra, we just finished Unit #5, which covered how to solve a system of linear inequalit ies. Students worked independently through this unit by complet ing slides and tasks.
Math 8
Math 8 will be looking at scatter plots and their types of associat ion. Students will be creat ing scatter plots and analyzing data. Students will conduct their own research on a topic and create a scatter plot based on the information that they collected.
Social Studies
We are finishing our 1920s unit this week. We will begin our unit on the Great Depression, looking at causes, impact, the Dust Bowl, the New Deal, and more!
Language Arts
Students will be working on all different types of argumentat ive writ ing, focusing on making claims, support ing with evidence and reasoning, addressing the counterclaim, and coming up with a rubuttal.
