Judaism is rich with references to the aging process, both its benefit, and the perils associated with it.

Before there was an AARP we are told that “They (the good) will yield fruit even in old age, they will remain vital and vigorous” Psalm 92.

We also hear the fear of being abandoned in old age. On the High Holy Days we recite:

“Hear our voice, Lord our God, spare us, pity us…..Do not cast us off in old age, When our strength declines do not forsake us.” High Holy Day Machzor from our earliest years we are taught “Honor your father and your mother.” Ex. 20:12. As a child it means to follow their instruction, to speak politely, to be helpful around the house. But what does it mean for us, as adults, caring for our aging loved ones? How do we make sure they feel remembered and honored?

November is National Family Caregivers Month. Although I have highlighted aging above, caregiving applies anytime one person has to provide for the basic needs and welfare of another. Whether providing care for an aging loved one, or someone with a disability, or even someone who is temporarily in need of special care, caregiving can be both unbelievably exhausting, and truly rewarding. In between those two extremes can be endless tedium, administrivia, and isolation. As our loved one’s condition changes we must change the care that we give. Sometimes we don’t know how

to make the adjustment.

Here are a few Jewish resources to help:

1. Your Rabbi: In addition to synagogue life I have worked as a chaplain for Jewish Family Service serving the aging, and sometimes abandoned, population. Please be in touch.

2. SEIVAH: JEWISH LIFE BEYOND MEMORY – a new not for profit service for those with dementia and their families and institutions. Contact Rabbi Michael Goldman at jlbeyondmemory@gmail. com or 914-419-7219.

3. Westchester Jewish Community Service, Rabbi Pamela Wax, [email protected], 914-761-0600x149. They run a Spousal Caregiver Group, and kosher home delivered meals, among other programs.

4. All of us. I would venture a guess that we all know someone who is a caregiver. Here are five easy things you can do to help them: Ask how they are. Offer to accompany them on a visit. Bring them a meal. Offer to run errands. Take them to the movies or other outing. Most of all, be present for them when they need someone to listen.

November is National Family Caregivers Month. But let’s make it a priority all year round. Caregiving isn’t limited to a month.

President’s Message"When you're green, you're growing, when you're

ripe you rot". Thanks to Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's, I once found a maxim to serve as a continual reminder that lifetime learning and change are something to strive for.

If we as Jews cannot change, will we rot? It seems that even with 5776 years of history and tradition, "members of the tribe" can find it difficult to accept that our people have always evolved and changed. We have always built on our rich traditions by adapting them to the times (as well as the places) in which we live.

How do you wish to evolve as a Jew in the 21st century? What might inspire you to connect more fully to Judaism and to contribute to our Jewish community? Does First Hebrew provide you with

the environment in which you can nourish your Jewish self?

I invite you to think of our Congregation as a living organism, one that we all are feeding and contributing to. Please engage with our community and open yourself to the myriad events, services, social occasions, and educational forums we provide. If there is something missing here for you, let's discuss it.

We are in the final analysis an evolving community, one which I hope will be open and appealing to a wide swath of Jews. We are green and growing, so, please grow along with us!

Sisterhood…Women Enjoying Jewish LifeIt’s cool and crisp outside today, a harbinger of

cold and freezing, but on the day of the October Sisterhood walk for the Support Connection, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Sisterhood is about service and fellowship and on that day, we had the most wonderful amalgam of both. Those of you who were unable to join us on that day will be happy to know that we raised $500 for this very important cause. We also had a lovely walk in good company in the camaraderie of a great number of people joined for a purpose. Doing mitzvot enhances the doer.

For our upcoming November meeting we are lucky I was able to convince the very busy Annie Wright to join us for a cooking class with menu items for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Hanukah holidays. Annie Wright is my very dear friend of many years, but she is also the author of “Russel Wright’s Menu Cookbook: A Guide to Easier Entertaining” and was featured on the Martha Stewart Show demonstrating menus from her cookbook. Russel Wright was a famous industrial designer in the mid-20th century. He created a well known line of “artistically

distinctive and commercially successful items that helped bring modern design to the public.” Some of you may be familiar with Manitoga, the house, studio and 75-acre woodland garden of Russel Wright in Garrison, which is about 15 minutes from the synagogue. It is a National Historic Landmark, an Affiliate Site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a World Monuments Watch Site and is open to the public. Annie Wright, as well as being the guardian of her father’s legacy, is a chef, caterer, and designer in her own right

Our November meeting will be our Sisterhood paid up breakfast meeting, where we urge everyone to pay their annual donation to Sisterhood to keep our programs going. If you haven’t sent yours in yet, please be sure to bring it to the meeting. We look forward to seeing everyone on November 8 at 9:15 for breakfast, with our program beginning at 10:00 am.

Bingo Schedule

BINGO: Why are we asking you to donate your time to helping out with Bingo? It generates approximately $25,000 in revenue per year to our operation of the synagogue. The time commitment is only about three hours on a Wednesday night. We now start Bingo at 6:30 pm so you and our customers can get home earlier. If you are opposed to fulfilling your obligation as a member, then pay the $400 Bingo assessment immediately and let Lisa know to take you off the Bingo list. As a member in good standing it is your obligation to participate in this fundraising activity. If the congregation chooses not to continue providing Bingo to the community and forfeiting the OPM (other people’s money), then the congregation will need to be assessed accordingly to raise the $20,000, or determine what services will be cut. Do your part of fundraising and show up for your assigned Bingo night. Bring a book or magazine to read (there is time when you are waiting). If you come late, it is still better than not coming at all. Or, if you choose, send the $400.

Let Everyone Know How Proud We are of Our Children! The Board of Education would like to honor our wonderful Bar/Bat Mitzvah students in a special way!

We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7 sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date, grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short description about his/her service project; you may also include a photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see their names in the bulletin with their classmates. The biography must be submitted to the editor SIX WEEKS prior to the first day of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah month to ensure placement in a timely fashion. Any articles sent after that time will be placed in the next bulletin, which may be after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. Please submit the biography to the bulletin at bulletin@ FirstHebrew.org or you can mail or fax to the FHC office.
