COMMUNITY TRANSIT SERVICES ‐ partnering with RTDto conduct Access‐a‐Ride assessments

DISABILITY BENEFITS SERVICES - assisting individuals

with disabilities to acquire income, health insurance,and other basic needs to stabilize their lives, health andliving situations

DISCOVERY CLUB - providing Saturday recreationalprograms for children and teens living with any disabilityand any special health care need, and their siblings

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES - providing training andguidance for people living with disabilities to prepare forand enter the workforce so they can earn money to liveand thrive

The Phoenix Gold Mine was purchasedin 1968 by Alvin “Al” Mosch and hisfamily of 4th generation, Coloradominers. The history of the mine is rich,and Al's connection to EastersealsColorado runs deep. His youngest child,Victor, was a camper during the summerat Easterseals Colorado’s RockyMountain Village (RMV) camp.

Al helped blast and move rock to createthe first wheelchair accessible trails atRMV. He also created the prospectors“Lucky Bucket” at the Phoenix GoldMine to help raise funds for RMV. Tothis day, it is still on display and tourguides continue to share stories withvisitors about its history and origination.

Alvin Joe Mosch was born June 10,1930 in Denver, Colorado.

During his childhood in the early Great Depression,he first worked to help his family by delivering milkto houses in Idaho Springs. As a teen in Arvada herepaired radios and worked as a movie theatreprojectionist. In 1947, Al joined the U.S. Navy andstudied electronics becoming a radio and teletypecommunications specialist. He soon advanced tobecome one of the youngest commissionedofficers for his age as a First Class Petty Officer atage 17. During the Korean War he was stationed atthe Port Lyautey Naval Air Station in Morocco.From there, he flew secret air surveillance missionswhile gathering intelligence about the Soviet Union.Al was honorably discharged near the end of 1951following a plane crash at sea in which he was theonly survivor.

At the end of his tour with the Navy, Al helped hisfather in numerous Clear Creek, Jefferson andBoulder County mines where they mined gold,silver, tungsten and beryllium. He learned drilling,blasting, timbering and milling techniques. Usinghis expertise with explosives, he dislodged

dangerous “rock hang ups” in thestopes of the Climax MolybdenumMine near Leadville. In the 1950s heworked at the Lamartine mine, runningthe mineral concentration plant forMontana Mining Company. Close toMoab, Utah, at Dead Horse Point, heprospected for uranium ores andfound many significant mines.

Ultimately, his greatest discoveryoccurred in 1957 when he met hisbride‐to‐be inside a mine up VirginiaCanyon near Idaho Springs. He wasmarried on May 30, 1958 to Patricia C.Herald, a student at Colorado Schoolof Mines. Early in their marriage, Alworked at Sundstrand as an inventorthen as an aerospace quality controlinspector at Martin Marietta andBeech Aircraft for the Gemini andApollo space missions. His effortshelped Pat earn her Engineer of Minesand Geological Engineer degrees fromthe Colorado School of Mines which allowed them to begin a family. From1959 to 1963 his children Cyndi, David,and Susie were born and then in 1978,

over 100,000 troy ounces of gold.

Al created the prospectors "LuckyBucket" to help raise funds for RMVcamp and other special needs childrenorganizations. The "Lucky Bucket" aredonations made from visitors taking the mine tour, as well as Dave and Becki Mosch who continue to honor Al's tradition. In 1968, Al purchased the PhoenixGold Mine and moved to Idaho Springsin 1972. Al helped his community inmany ways. He was active with minesearch and rescue as well as the ClearCreek County Sheriff’s Posse bybecoming its captain. Concernedabout local senior citizens, he helpedcreate Project Support, a senior careprogram in Clear Creek County. For theEmpire based Easterseals ColoradoRocky Mountain Village (RMV) camp,he helped blast and move rock tocreate the first wheelchair accessibletrails. His son, Victor, was a summercamper at RMV so Al knew theimportance of accessibility for thechildren and adults living withdisabilities experiencing camp life. In1988, Al and his family decided toshare their passion for prospecting,mining and panning for gold withothers by offering tours at the mine.The history of the mine is rich.
