On a per-capita basis, the Sand Island ZIP code area, which includes Oahu Community Correctional Center and other parts of Kalihi and Moanalua, has the most offenders who list that ZIP code as their current or last address. Laie, on the other hand, has the fewest offenders per capita.

Three of five Oahu ZIP codes where the most offend-ers have addresses also happen to have prison facilities that house offenders. When the imprisoned offenders are excluded, two of those ZIP codes — Sand Island and Waipahu — still are in the top five.

Roughly 70 percent of the state’s registered sex offenders have Oahu addresses — not surprising given that the island is home to roughly 70 percent of Hawaii’s population. Offenders live or have addresses in all of the island’s more than 30 geographic ZIP code areas.

More than two-thirds of Hawaii’s nearly 3,000 registered sex offenders have Oahu addresses. The state places information about where offenders live or are incarcerated plus other identifying characteristics on an online registry: http://sexoffenders.ehawaii.gov/sexoffender/search.html. Offenders are required to keep information current and are considered noncompliant and can be prosecuted for a felony if they don’t. The registry is designed to inform

residents about sex offenders in their communities. The online site can be searched multiple ways, including by ZIP code or street name. A current photo, if available, is included for each offender. The registry has some duplication because offenders who hold jobs or volunteer outside the ZIP codes where they live or are incarcerated will be listed in that second ZIP code, too. The graphics below were based on registry data as of Nov. 19.
